Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Poems by British and American Authors Having this popular aim prominently in view, the compiler of the present volume has hoped to be able, by limiting his selections as closely as possible to short pieces, to bring together a larger number and greater variety of popular poetical favorites than can perhaps be found elsewhere in equal compass. It would of course be too much to expect that any reader could find here all his favorite pieces. Judgments would differ in many instances as to what should be given precedence; and some chance omissions are inevitable. As a necessary result of the preference for short pieces, many of the older writers are represented but sparingly: and from this there also results, what it is hoped may prove to be an advantage - and what, indeed, has been one of the objects of the book - that many pieces are to be found here which are not usually given in similar collections. In order to afford as wide a representation of authors as possible, the selections have been confined, except in a very few instances, to a small number from each. Many authors, indeed, are known by but a single piece - which would hence have a special claim to a place here. As far as practicable, whole poems have been chosen; but where an author could best be represented by some familiar or characteristic extract, this has been used, and in such case the full title of the poem from which the extract is taken usually appears at the end. Great pains have been taken to secure correct versions of the pieces used. This is, however, a matter of too much difficulty to permit any one who has ever attempted it to be confident of entire success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Leaves From the American Poets I may be permitted to add, without incurring the charge of undue egotism, I trust, that the prepara tion of this work has been to me literally a labour of love. It seemed to me a fitting tribute to render to those Poets whose works had entered so largely into my professional studies for the last thirty years, and between whom and the mere cur sory reader, and those ofa yet immature age, I had endeavoured faithfully to act as an interpreter, that I should, in the probably closing effort Of my literary career, present a worthy monument record ing the Genius of American Poesy, acceptable to the reading Public, and one that should do honour to the Poets I have selected for representation; and to these Gifted Men and Women I most re spectfully dedicate these my humble labours. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Masterpieces of English Poetry, Vol. 3 I would not ask, then, as some critics do, that a lyric should be thoughtless and careless, void of ideas, misty in utterance, and free from the restraining touch of art. I would ask only that it should have at its heart a vital and controlling emotion expressed in a song-like way; and I would measure its rank as a lyric, by the truth and beauty, the tenderness or the power, of the feeling, and by the purity of the art, (in its most perfect result hiding the traces of its own la bour, ) by which the poem sings us into harmony with the poet's mood. It is thus that the pure lyrics in this volume have been chosen from the rich stores of English verse They range in tone from the simplest note of joy at the coming of the spring, to the deepest note of confidence and immortal hope at the passing of human life into the unknown. The Songs of Nature are lyrical expres sions of man's feeling towards the changing sea sons, the living creatures who inhabit the earth with him, the light and the darkness, the sea. And the stars. Some of the poems in this group border closely upon the region of Descriptive and Reflective Verse; and it would be possible, of course, to place them there; j ust as some of the poems which are to be included in that volume might be transferred to this. In any arrange ment or classification of poetry there is always room for variation, according to the taste or the point of view of the person who is making it. To me the nature-songs which ate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Masterpieces of English Poetry, Vol. 2: By British and American Authors, Dyls and Stories in Verse This volume of Little Masterpieces of English Poetry contains idyls and stories in verse. It covers a region lying between the ballad, which is almost, if not altogether, objective and impersonal, and the descriptive and reflective lyric, in which the personal thought and feeling of the poet is the main element. The poems in this volume are marked by a blending of the two elements. They are narratives which have in them something of the reflective and descriptive element. Of course this must not be taken as a hard and fast classification, nor are the divisions within the volume to be so regarded. Many of the poems here have aspects and relations which connect them with the poems in other groups. The idyls have been separated from the rest on the principle of classification, that they are poems which call up pictures of life and landscape for the sake of the pictures themselves. There is emotional coloring and usually a human figure or figures in the foreground. The difficulty arises with poems like Shelley's Sensitive Plant and Lowell's Rh cus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language This book in its progress has recalled often to my memory a man with whose friendship we were once honoured, to whom no region of English Literature was unfamiliar, and who, whilst rich in all the noble gifts of Nature, was most eminently distinguished by the noblest and the rarest, - just judgment and high hearted patriotism. It would have been hence a peculiar pleasure and pride to dedicate what I have endeavoured to make a true national Anthology of three centuries to Henry Hallam. But he is beyond the reach of any human tokens of love and reverence and I desire therefore to place before it a name united with his by associations which, whilst Poetry retains her hold on the minds of Englishmen, are not likely to be forgotten. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Household Book of English Poetry The first question which I asked myself, when I resumed a purpose long ago entertained, and then for a long while laid aside, of publishing such a selection of English Poetry as the present, was this, namely, whether Mr. Palgrave by his Golden Treasury had not so occupied the ground that there was no place for one who should come after. The selection is one made with so exact an acquaintance with the sources from which such a Trea sury as his should be replenished, with so fine a taste in regard of what should be admitted there, that this was the conclusion to which at the first I was disposed to arrive. But on further consideration I saw reason to change my mind. The volume which I meditated was on so different a scheme and plan from his, that, while no doubt I should sometimes go over ground which he had gone over before, it seemed likely that for the most part our paths would be different, and the poems which I should select not identical with those already chosen by him. This to so great an extent has proved the case, that of more than three hundred pieces which compose this volume, less than sixty have appeared in his. And. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Treasury of American Songs and Lyrics Poets of America the names of over three hun dred native writers. American verse in the last half century has been extraordinarily prolific. It would seem that the time has come, in the course of our national literature, for proving all things and holding fast that which is good. The fact that the title of this compilation instantly calls to mind that of Mr. Palgrave's scholarly collee tion of English lyrics need not prove a disadvantage to the book if the purpose which led to the choice of name is understood. The verse of a single cen tury produced in a new country should not be expected to equal the poetic wealth of an old and intellectual nation. But if American poetry cannot hope to rival the poetry of the mother country, it may at least be compared with it; and the fact of such a comparative point of view will aid rather than hinder the student of our native poetry in estimating its value. The editions followed have been mentioned in every case. I have scrupulously retained the punctuation of these original edi tions, and only modernized the spelling of the old copies; while I have not ventured to omit any part of any poem. I have not supplied titles of my own, but have adopted those I found already employed in the editions used as models, or, in some of the cases in which I found none, have merely added a descriptive one, such as Song from 'don Juan.' Book Thousand and One Gems of English Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thousand and One Gems of English Poetry Classic Reprint written by Charles MacKay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thousand and One Gems of English Poetry The design of the Editor or Compiler of the following volume was to present one great panoramic view of the masterpieces of English poetry, and that of the publishers to issue it in a form and at a price which would recommend it to the taste of the rich, without placing it beyond the means of the poor. The original intention of the Editor was to commence with Chaucer and end with Wordsworth, Moore, Rogers, Hood, Campbell, and other poets of the last generation, who have recently passed from among us, thus excluding the works of living writers. To this arrangement the publishers made objection, on the ground, very easily defensible, that some of the brightest gems of the "Thousand and One" are the productions of living genius - both in Great Britain and the United States of America. The Editor yielded the point, but was met with the serious difficulty that it was not in all cases possible to include the works of living writers - even if their consent could be obtained; - firstly, because the copyrights were not always their own; - secondly, because their addresses were not obtainable without great trouble and loss of time; - and thirdly, because the modem poets, in England and America, were so numerous, that if specimens of all their poetic jewellery were got together, an undue proportion of the volume would be occupied by writers of the second half of the nineteenth century. Another difficulty which personally was more serious, existed in the dilemma in which the Editor found himself with regard to his own compositions. Book The Golden Treasury of Longer Poems

Download or read book The Golden Treasury of Longer Poems written by Ernest Rhys and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Treasury of Longer Poems: Selected Edited This volume of longer poems is the natural successor to the two anthopologies of songs and lyrics and the ballad book in the same library. It does not apply too rigidly its measure of length, being intended to take up the line of English verse at the point where the others paused, to maintain the record and make it of a piece with the rest. There are poems that are still lyrical, like Drayton's "Agincourt," and others, like Chaucer's "Knightes Tale," which show the sustained narrative power of English verse. Again there are poems, like Parnell's "Hermit," which knit up afresh the old ballad tradition of "Chevy Chase" and "Clerk Saunders." There are noble elegies. too; and tributes of poet to poet - "Adonais" and Ben Jonson's lines to the Beloved Memory of Shakespeare, while the English love of place and of Nature is heard again and again in its pages. In all this variety, the main purpose is to show the great succession of the English poets who wrote, as Coleridge says, with A light in sound, a soundlike power in light, Rhythm in all thought, and joyance everywhere. It keeps on the whole close to the recognised track. It does not forget the great prose writers, like Swift and Dr. Johnson, who influenced verse. But chiefly it upholds the princely line, in which Chaucer, Spenser, Marvell, Milton, Ben Jonson, Crashaw, Henry Vaughan, Pope, Goldsmith, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley and Keats are the masters and the great maintainers. In the shadow of their greater fame stand other poets worthy of remembrance, on whom as it were the true tradition took hold - men who were not great poets but who yet contributed to the rich store. Such were Joseph Warton, whose "Grave of King Arthur" is rescued from comparative forgetfulness, and Shenstone, whose "Schoolmistress" is the reminder of an old and pleasant mode of rural art.
