Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fabulous Flathead by Jesse Fay McAlear, as told to Sharon Bergman, is an extensive local history of the Flathead Indian Reservation, which is located in western Montana on the Flathead River. It is home to the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d’Oreilles tribes—also known as the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation. The reservation was created through the July 16, 1855, Treaty of Hellgate. In addition to detailing the story of Montana’s Native Americans, who have lived there for more than 14,000 years, The Fabulous Flathead summarizes the anthropological information on the Confederated Tribes; treats the history of the tribes before the opening of the reservation; discusses cattle and buffalo on the reservation; and sketches transportation, economic development, the irrigation system, as well as other topics in Flathead history.

Download or read book The Foundation of the Catholic Mission in Hong Kong 1841 1894 written by Ha Keloon Louis and published by 三聯書店(香港)有限公司. This book was released on 2018-06-02 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church is one of the few institutions that have survived since the inception of the British colony. She has contributed much during its development. As early as 1841, she set up a mission in Hong Kong. She and her various religious orders and congregations engaged in charitable works for the poor and the elderly in the early days of Hong Kong, greatly relieving the burden on the newly established colonial government. Today, apart from religious services, the Catholic Church still plays an important role in providing Hong Kong with diversified and professional services in medical care, education and social welfare. Historical studies on the Catholic Church in Hong Kong of a comprehensive nature are rare in comparison with other religions. The reasons of this may include the complicated organizational structure of the Catholic Church and the multiple languages used in the archival documents, such as Latin, French, Italian and Portuguese. As a Catholic clergy, the author of this book, Fr Louis Ha, is knowledgeable about the internal operation of the Church. He is also familiar with many European languages which help him master the original records and guarantee the credible result of his research. The contents of this book are based on the large number of documents provided by the Hong Kong Diocesan Archives Office, by archives in the Vatican and in various religious orders in Europe. As an objective and impartial historian, Fr. Louis Ha honestly pointed out the power struggle in the Church, the confrontation with the government, the competition between Chinese and foreign clerics. In fact, a candid description of the Catholic Church in Hong Kong is shown in front of the readers. Definitely, it is a precious reference book for the study of the local society, religion, education, and charitable work in early Hong Kong.

Download or read book Kermit written by Kaysie L. Sabella and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well known for its oil and gas production, Kermit was originally founded by ranchers needing a supply hub in an isolated area of West Texas. An 1876 campaign by Col. Ranald S. Mackenzie helped rid the area of Comanche Indians, and prompted by the state's policy for free use of its land, ranchers quickly moved in. This population growth resulted in the establishment of Winkler County in 1887. Competition between nearby towns for the title of county seat lasted until 1910, when Kermit's offer of free lots won it the designation. Though the town later experienced a drought, which severely crippled the population, the discovery of oil on ranchland owned by Thomas G. and Ada Hendrick in 1926 helped the town boom. Today Kermit's economy is sustained by ranching and oil and gas production.

Download or read book Conversations and Soliloquies written by Maurice Hommel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of apartheid in South Africa, journalist Maurice Hommel documented the cruel injustices and tensions running rampant within the country. What he saw forever impacted his life. Conversations and Soliloquies presents a collection of Hommels essays and articles from the last fifty-five years, documenting and analyzing South African history during and after apartheid. Over time, the essays illuminate, in sometimes graphic detail, the anti-apartheid struggle that defined South Africa for decades. Beginning with the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, Hommel delves into the bloody history of apartheid and traces how it pervaded every segment of society. His interviews with prominent South Africans, including Desmond Tutu and Neville Alexander, offer intimate glimpses into the thoughts of those working for change. In addition, stark photographs capture the emotions of the time. In its breadth of historical perspectives, this collection is a significant contribution to an understanding of South Africas evolution to a nonracial, nonsexist, democratic country. Although lingering prejudices and smoldering resentments remain, Hommel carries an unshakable optimism of South Africas enormous potential. Conversations and Soliloquies captures that hope.
Download or read book Andrews written by Don Ingram and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrews County was named for Richard Andrews, the first casualty in Texas's fight for independence from Mexico in 1835 at the battle of Concepción. Before the creation of the county in 1876 by the Texas legislature, the area had been largely ignored by state officials and avoided by ranchers and settlers because of its remoteness, scarcity of water, and attacks by local Native Americans. That all changed in 1875 after an expedition by U.S. cavalry troops led by Col. William R. Shafter opened the region up to settlers. The town of Andrews became the county seat in 1910 after a close election race with nearby Shafter Lake. Ranching was the first economic driver in the county, but the discovery of oil in 1929 changed everything. The oil boom created jobs, brought in revenue, and attracted new residents. Today Andrews is experiencing growth thanks to renewed demand for oil, nuclear-related industries, first-class sporting venues, and other amenities that have rejuvenated the community.
