Download or read book Cranford written by Robert Fridlington and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1995-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cranford celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding in 1996. To commemorate the event, two local historians, Robert Fridlington and Lawrence Fuhro, have joined forces to create a wonderful new history of the town. This book is a nostalgic look back at the town's roots, with over 200 fascinating photographs dating from 1871 to the 1940s. These images bring to life the town's rich heritage--its Victorian downtown district, school "daze," special events, and faces forgotten and familiar. We see Cranford's origins as a sleepy river village dependent on farming and milling, and its growth as a suburb from the late nineteenth century to the end of World War II. Many of these remarkable pictures have never before been seen by the public, and the authors have uncovered images and stories longforgotten, such as the town's African-American baseball teams and efforts to make Cranford the state capital.
Download or read book Dictionary of Basilian Biography written by P. Wallace Platt and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Basilian Biography contains 632 biographical entries on the members of the Congregation of Saint Basil who died in the years between 1822, when the congregation was founded, and 2002. The dictionary presents the personal background, education, and various appointments as well as the character, talents, and bibliography of each member, while defining the contribution of each in the educational or pastoral work of the Basilian Fathers. This heritage belongs not only to the Basilian Fathers or the Catholic Church, but to the wider societies and cultures of the countries that were touched by the work of the Basilians. This second edition of the Dictionary of Basilian Biography is approximately three times the size of the original edition by Father Robert J. Scollard, published in 1969. The increase in size is due not only to the additional number of members who died between that year and 2002, but also to additional archival research into the lives and careers of the early members of the Congregation in France. It represents eight years of work by editor P. Wallace Platt and his editorial board, enriching the book and balancing its presentation.

Download or read book Cholera and Nation written by Pamela K. Gilbert and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2009-01-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from sermons, novels, newspaper editorials, poetry, medical texts, and the writings of social activists, Cholera and Nation explores how the coming of the cholera epidemics during a period of intense political reform in Britain set the terms by which the social body would be defined. In part by historical accident, epidemic disease and especially cholera became foundational to the understanding of the social body. As the healthy body was closely tied to a particular vision of nation and modernity, the unhealthy body was proportionately racialized and othered. In turn, epidemic disease could not be separated from issues of social responsibility, political management, and economic unrest, which perpetually threatened the nation and its identity. For the rest of the century, the emergent field of public health would be central to the British national imaginary, defining the nation's civilization and modernity by its sanitary progress.

Book excerpt: Households of Faith examines a variety of religious traditions with a particular focus on the way in which religious communities define gender identities. By analysing gender relations within the matrix of the family, they explore both the conflicts and interdependency of gender roles.

Download or read book Canada s Victorian Oil Town written by Christina Burr and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-06-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing from traditional historiography focused on the economic role of resource development, Canada's Victorian Oil Town incorporates an understanding of the connections between science and technology, nation and imperialism, and cultural nuances of community-building. Burr looks at the cultural importance of place and how collective identity was nurtured in the community. She also illustrates how the image of Petrolia as Canada's Victorian Oil Town has been used since the 1970s to develop a thriving tourist industry in the region. Interdisciplinary in scope, Canada's Victorian Oil Town draws from the history of imperialism, science, resource development, local history, gender studies, and cultural geography.
