Book The Correspondence 1868 1875

Download or read book The Correspondence 1868 1875 written by Walt Whitman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Series Editors Gay Wilson Allen and Sculley Bradley Originally published between 1961 and 1984, and now available in paperback for the first time, the critically acclaimed Collected Writings of Walt Whitman captures every facet of one of America's most important poets. In discussing letter-writing, Whitman made his own views clear. Simplicity and naturalness were his guidelines. “I like my letters to be personal—very personal—and then stop.“ The six volumes in The Correspondence comprise nearly 3,000 letters written over a half century, revealing Whitman the person as no other documents can. Volume II presents the poet during the years he was developing an international reputation. As they came to understand one of the most important American voices of the century, European writers such as Edward Dowden and John Addington Symonds began to correspond with Whitman. English author Anne Gilchrist wrote her first impassioned love letter to the American poet in 1871. Whitman characteristically waited six weeks before he replied, and his subsequent handling of the unwanted ardor proves a fascinating study of a lover who feared to be loved.

Book Objects That Talk and Teach

Download or read book Objects That Talk and Teach written by Louis T. Talbot and published by Solid Christian Books. This book was released on with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of presenting the Gospel message in terms which the little child can understand is inestimable. During His earthly ministry, our Lord Jesus Christ recognized this need for simplicity, and constantly taught the people spiritual lessons through reference to objects with which they were most familiar. The wise pastor today must be ever on the alert to employ this method in presenting the truth to the children of his congregation. Since fully eighty-five per cent of our knowledge is acquired through the eye-gate, this avenue of approach should be more widely utilized than is generally the case. As a part of the morning service each Lord’s day, in the Church of the Open Door, Los Angeles, California, the pastor, Rev. Louis T. Talbot, gives an object lesson for children, presenting vital spiritual truths applicable to young and old alike. To meet the demand of many who know of this plan, and in order to furnish practical examples for those desiring to follow this method, Mr. Talbot is making available much of the material which he has recently used. It gives me great pleasure to write this note of commendation of the illuminating and appealing lessons which have been used with such benefit in the services of the Church of the Open Door. I, for one, rejoice greatly that this suggestive material is now accessible to all those who seek to utilize the object lesson method in leading the children into a deeper interest in the things of God. Elbert L. McCreery. Dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, March, 1934.
