Book Gold nickel Surface Alloy Chemistry with Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide

Download or read book Gold nickel Surface Alloy Chemistry with Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide written by Christopher Chih-Wan Loo Leon and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key to low temperature carbon monoxide oxidation on gold-nickel random surface alloys is molecularly (rather than atomically) adsorbed oxygen, and weakly bound carbon monoxide. To characterize these adsorbates, saturation coverages of each diatomic on Au-Ni(111) held at 80 K are separately measured via high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, as a function of increasing gold coverage. The progression from adsorptive to non-adsorptive behavior is rationalized by constructing two mutually consistent adsorption models for O2 and CO that account for the alloy d-band, the surface atom centers' moiré pattern arrangement, and the associated subsurface reconstruction with triangular misfit dislocation loops. Surface alloying with Au is central to the existence and stability of peroxo- and/or superoxo-like species unknown on Ni(111) and presently observed at 743, 856, and 957 cm−1, corresponding to O2 adsorption sites of type pseudo-3-fold fcc/hcp, degenerate-pseudo-2-fold fcc/hcp and bridge, and pseudo-3-fold bridge, respectively. No new Au-Ni adsorption sites for CO result from alloying. CO adsorption occurs at Ni-bridge, Ni-atop, and Au-atop sites detectable at 1860-1960, 2060-2110, and 2150-2170 cm−1, respectively. These contrasting behaviors originate from differences in the O2 and CO frontier orbitals' electron configuration, and hence, the surface-adsorbate densities of states near the Fermi level. The vibrational loss features' center frequencies and intensities also reflect the alloy morphology. Distinct molecular O2 species are related to distinct regions of an effective alloy unit cell. Evidence of the surface reconstruction is also detectable in a weighted average of the CO center frequencies, and the adsorbed CO configurational entropy. CO adsorption sites behave nearly independently of each other due to an approximate equivalence between the effect of CO lateral interactions and d-band lowering with Au. With these insights, further experiments involving O2 followed by CO exposures on Au-Ni(111) enable better characterization of the CO oxidation mechanism and reaffirm the central role of molecular O2 in CO2 production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy is rapidly developing into the single most powerful analytical technique in basic and applied science.for investigating the chemical and structural properties of solids. Its ex plosive growth beginning in 1967 was triggered by the development of Auger analyzers capable of de tecting one atom layer of material in a fraction of a second. Continued growth was guaranteed firstly by the commercial availability of apparatus which combined the capabilities of scanning electron mi croscopy and ion-mill depth profiling with Auger analysis, and secondly by the increasing need to know the atomistics of many processes in fundamental research and engineering applications. The expanding use of Auger analysis was accompanied by an increase in the number of publications dealing with it. Because of the developing nature of Auger spectroscopy, the articles have appeared in many different sources covering diverse disciplines, so that it is extremely difficult to discover just what has or has not been subjected to Auger analysis. In this situation, a comprehensive bibliography is obviou-sly useful to those both inside and outside the field. For those in the field, this bibliography should be a wonderful time saver for locating certain references, in researching a particular topic, or when considering various aspects of instrumentation or data analysis. This bibliography not only provides the most complete listing of references pertinent to surface Auger analysis available today, but it is also a basis for extrapolating from past trends to future expectations.

Book Metal Metal Bonds and Clusters in Chemistry and Catalysis

Download or read book Metal Metal Bonds and Clusters in Chemistry and Catalysis written by John P. Fackler Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a series of papers and abstracts from the 7th Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program symposium held in the spring of 1989 at Texas A&M University. The symposium was larger than previous IUCCP symposia since it also celebrated the 25 years that had elapsed since the initial discovery by F. A. Cotton and his co-workers of the existence of metal-metal quadruple bonds. Cotton's discovery demonstrated that multiple bonding in inorganic systems is not governed by the same constraints observed in organic chemistry regarding s and p orbital involvement. The d orbitals are involved in the multiple bonding description. The quadruple bond involves considerable d orbital overlap between adjacent metal centers. Part I of this series of papers focuses upon the impact of this discovery and describes further contributions to the development of the field. Multiple metal-metal bonding now is known to permeate broad areas of transition metal chemistry. The understanding of metal-metal bonding that developed as a result of the discovery of multiple metal-metal bonding awakened a new chemistry involving metal clusters. Clusters were defined by Cotton to be species containing metal-metal bonding. Clusters in catalysis therefore seemed a logical grouping of papers in this symposium. Clusters play an every increasing role in the control of chemical reactions. Part II of this book describes some of the interesting new developments in this field. In Part III the papers examine the role clusters play in describing and understanding solid state materials.
