Book The Oxford Handbook of the European Bronze Age

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the European Bronze Age written by Anthony Harding and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the European Bronze Age is a wide-ranging survey of a crucial period in prehistory during which many social, economic, and technological changes took place. Written by expert specialists in the field, the book provides coverage both of the themes that characterize the period, and of the specific developments that took place in the various countries of Europe. After an introduction and a discussion of chronology, successive chapters deal with settlement studies, burial analysis, hoards and hoarding, monumentality, rock art, cosmology, gender, and trade, as well as a series of articles on specific technologies and crafts (such as transport, metals, glass, salt, textiles, and weighing). The second half of the book covers each country in turn. From Ireland to Russia, Scandinavia to Sicily, every area is considered, and up to date information on important recent finds is discussed in detail. The book is the first to consider the whole of the European Bronze Age in both geographical and thematic terms, and will be the standard book on the subject for the foreseeable future.

Book Stone Vessels and Values in the Bronze Age Mediterranean

Download or read book Stone Vessels and Values in the Bronze Age Mediterranean written by Andrew Bevan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-08-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The societies that developed in the eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age produced the most prolific and diverse range of stone vessel traditions known at any time or anywhere in the world. Stone vessels are therefore a key class of artefact in the early history of this region. As a form of archaeological evidence, they offer important analytical advantages over other artefact types - virtual indestructibility, a wide range of functions and values, huge variety in manufacturing traditions, as well as the subtractive character of stone and its rich potential for geological provenancing. In this 2007 book, Andrew Bevan considers individual stone vessel industries in great detail. He also offers a highly comparative and value-led perspective on production, consumption and exchange logics throughout the eastern Mediterranean over a period of two millennia during the Bronze Age (ca.3000–1200 BC).

Book A Documentation of Bronze Age Ritual Vessels from the Shang Dynasty of China Within the Collection of the Buffalo Museum of Science Buffalo New York

Download or read book A Documentation of Bronze Age Ritual Vessels from the Shang Dynasty of China Within the Collection of the Buffalo Museum of Science Buffalo New York written by Kristina Laun and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to catalog the collection of Shang Dynasty bronze ritual vessels within the collection of the Buffalo Museum of Science. Consisting of a li-ding, a gu, a jue, and a hu, each vessel is treated separately, being given its own biographical chapter. Each chapter gives detailed descriptions, analysis of form and design, possible interpretations of inscriptions (where applicable), discusses its purpose and use, and concludes with what the observations may tell us about Shang society as a whole. Concluding remarks are given linking the vessels to each other and then to the museum itself. Finally, an explanation is given as to why this collection, consisting of only four vessels, should be considered at all by scholars in the field. Since they belong neither to the very highest rank in Shang society, nor to the very lowest, but to members of the intermediate classes, they help complete the story of Shang civilization by giving voice to those who silently and loyally made the bureaucracy run.

Book Ritual in Early Bronze Age Grave Goods

Download or read book Ritual in Early Bronze Age Grave Goods written by John Hunter and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exotic and impressive grave goods from burials of the ÔWessex CultureÕ in Early Bronze Age Britain are well known and have inspired influential social and economic hypotheses, invoking the former existence of chiefs, warriors and merchants and high-ranking pastoralists. Alternative theories have sought to explain the how display of such objects was related to religious and ritual activity rather than to economic status, and that groups of artefacts found in certain graves may have belonged to religious specialists. This volume is the result of a major research that aimed to investigate Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age grave goods in relation to their possible use as special dress accessories or as equipment employed within ritual activities and ceremonies. Many items of adornment can be shown to have formed elements of elaborate costumes, probably worn by individuals, both male and female, who held important ritual roles within society. Furthermore, the analysis has shown that various categories of object long interpreted as mundane types of tool were in fact items of bodily adornment or implements used in ritual contexts, or in the special embellishment of the human body. Although never intended to form a complete catalogue of all the relevant artefacts from England the volume provides an extensive, and intensively illustrated, overview of a large proportion of the grave goods from English burial sites.

Book The Accomplished Art

Download or read book The Accomplished Art written by George Eogan and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 1994 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1500 gold objects from the British and Irish Bronze Age survive in collections today. Based on studies of these objects, this volume presents an evaluation and interpretation of the material in social terms, and is complemented by distribution maps and illustrations of typical examples of each class or sub-class in their own right, gold objects of the Bronze Age are also vital documents aiding our understanding not only of the work of craftsmen and technicians but also of the broader aspects of society such as social stratification, trade, commerce and ritual. After examining the natural and historical setting of British and Irish gold, this book looks at gold-working at four main periods during the Bronze Age: Beaker societies and the earliest insular gold objects; gold working in an age of industrial expansion and wealth; cultural transformation of the 13th-12th centuries BC; final late Bronze Age gold, apogee and end.

Book Mortuary Ritual and Society in Bronze Age Cyprus

Download or read book Mortuary Ritual and Society in Bronze Age Cyprus written by Priscilla Keswani and published by Equinox Publishing Ltd.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking investigation of burial practices and social transformations in the era when Cypriot agricultural communities moved from village to urban life and became major players in the eastern Mediterranean copper trade. The author develops an innovative theoretical and methodological approach that enables her to define and elucidate the shifting spatial relationships between tombs and habitation areas, the elaboration of rituals involving secondary treatment and collective burial, and changing patterns of mortuary expenditure and symbolism throughout the Bronze Age. Keswani proposes that during the Early-Middle Bronze periods, the growing elaboration of mortuary festivities and their crucial importance in negotiating status hierarchies contributed to the intensification of Cypriot copper production and the expansion of interregional exchange relations. Subsequent changes in mortuary practice suggest that the importance of collective burial rites and traditional modes of ritual display diminished over the course of the Late Bronze Age, as urban institutions multiplied and the bases of social prestige were transformed.
