Download or read book Goin to Weather written by Sally Bond and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally Bond has always tried to live her life by the sailing term goin to weather, denoting a boat captain and crew driving a racing sailboat hard, fast, and efficiently into a headwind. As an outdoor enthusiast, Bond believes that drive and determination, channeled toward worthy goals, are the ingredients of success, even in the face of tough challenges. Bond weaves American history into an engaging, chronological account of her life that begins with her childhood growing up in a little Iowa town in the midst of the Great Depression. As the threat of world war loomed, Bond listened to war news on radio broadcasts, watched newsreels at the movie theater, and dreamed of one day seeing the ocean. But it was not until the 1950s, when her parents decided to move to California, that Bonds dream finally came true. While detailing her coming-of-age journey, eventual marriage, and foray into motherhood, Bond offers a glimpse into the philosophies and morals that have guided her through both successes and tragedies. As she matured into an adventurous outdoorswoman who embraced sailboat racing and triathlons, Bond shares how she learned to apply the principles of sailing to her own life to persevere through many difficulties. Goin to Weather is the compelling story of one womans journey through life as she strived to achieve her goals, faced adversity, and grew to new heights.

Book excerpt: The capstone of Ken Wells’s acclaimed Catahoula Bayou trilogy, Logan’s Storm tracks the epic journey of Logan LaBauve as he flees corrupt cops while trying to lead Chilly Cox—the teenager whose “crime” was rescuing Logan’s son, Meely, from a racist bully—to safety. But dodging two-footed predators deep in the Cajun backwaters turns out to be the easy part. As Logan, accompanied by a newfound love interest, heads to Florida to lie low, a killer hurricane springs from the Gulf—and lives are suddenly on the line. Wells writes with Twain’s flair for adventure and Welty’s sense of place, making Logan’s Storm a trip through the heart and soul of a singular American character.

Book excerpt: Tyler Spotswood, an alcoholic campaign manager, helps elect a corrupt Southern politician to the U.S. Senate. When his boss, Chuck Crawford aka “Number One,” pins a scandal on Spotswood, Tyler is too drunk to blow the whistle. Number One draws many comparisons to Robert Penn Warren’s All the King’s Men. Crawford reminds many of Louisiana politician Huey Long, a figure studied in person by Dos Passos.

Download or read book Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English written by Michael B. Montgomery and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 3218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English is a revised and expanded edition of the Weatherford Award–winning Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English, published in 2005 and known in Appalachian studies circles as the most comprehensive reference work dedicated to Appalachian vernacular and linguistic practice. Editors Michael B. Montgomery and Jennifer K. N. Heinmiller document the variety of English used in parts of eight states, ranging from West Virginia to Georgia—an expansion of the first edition's geography, which was limited primarily to North Carolina and Tennessee—and include over 10,000 entries drawn from over 2,200 sources. The entries include approximately 35,000 citations to provide the reader with historical context, meaning, and usage. Around 1,600 of those examples are from letters written by Civil War soldiers and their family members, and another 4,000 are taken from regional oral history recordings. Decades in the making, the Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English surpasses the original by thousands of entries. There is no work of this magnitude available that so completely illustrates the rich language of the Smoky Mountains and Southern Appalachia.

Download or read book What They Say in New England written by Clifton Johnson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "WHEN I began to collect these signs and sayings, it was with the idea of gathering them for my own entertainment. In days like the present of universal books and schools, I thought I could hope to get only a few remnants of the thought and notions that have descended to us from the illiterate and superstitious ages of the past; and I supposed that by the time I had picked up two or three scores of these oddities the subject would be exhausted as far as New England was concerned. But when I began to notice, I found that people in their every-day conversation were constantly dropping remarks on the significance of all sorts of things that were a part of this old folk-lore. When questioned, nearly every one, old and young, could repeat a few sayings of the kind I sought, and among these were almost always some I had not heard before. My collection grew until I saw the possibility of a volume, and I could not but wonder what the superstitions of the Dark Ages were like if these were only remnants."
