Book Novels and the Sociology of the Contemporary

Download or read book Novels and the Sociology of the Contemporary written by Arpad Szakolczai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book substantiates two claims. First, the modern world was not simply produced by "objective" factors, rooted in geographical discoveries and scientific inventions, to be traced to economic, technological or political factors, but is the outcome of social, cultural and spiritual processes. Among such factors, beyond the Protestant ethic (Max Weber), the rise of the absolutist state and its disciplinary network (Michel Foucault), or court society (Norbert Elias), a prime role is played by theatre. The modern reality is deeply theatricalized. Second, a special access for studying this theatricalized world is offered by novels. The best classical novels not simply can be interpreted as describing a world "like" the theatre, but they capture and present a world that has become thoroughly transformed into a global theatre. The theatre effectively transformed the world, and classical novels effectively analyze this "theatricalized" reality – much better than the main instruments supposedly destined to study reality, philosophy and sociology. Thus, instead of using the technique of sociology to analyze novels, the book will treat novels as a "royal road" to analyze a theatricalized reality, in order to find our way back to a genuine and meaningful life.

Download or read book Axiological Illnesses written by Nicolae Râmbu and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axiology can be summarised as the branch of philosophy which studies the nature of value and values. In this collection, Professor Nicolae Râmbu addresses axiology through the lens of ‘illnesses’ – drawing on philosophical works from Kant, Nietzsche, Hildebrand, and Fichte; and the literature of Dostoevsky, Goethe, Shakespeare and Machiavelli, amongst many others. The common element among the collection is the explosive nature of values. This book serves as a warning that such sublime things as values can sometimes become so dangerous that they can destroy lives or even entire civilizations. It will be a valuable addition to any library supporting teaching and study in philosophy and the humanities.

Download or read book World Antiquarianism written by Alain Schnapp and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term antiquarianism refers to engagement with the material heritage of the past—an engagement that preceded the modern academic discipline of archaeology. Antiquarian activities result in the elaboration of particular social behaviors and the production of tools for exploring the collective memory. This book is the first to compare antiquarianism in a global context, examining its roots in the ancient Near East, its flourishing in early modern Europe and East Asia, and its manifestations in nonliterate societies of Melanesia and Polynesia. By establishing wide-reaching geographical and historical perspectives, the essays reveal the universality of antiquarianism as an embodiment of the human mind and open new avenues for understanding the representation of the past, from ancient societies to the present.

Book Domenico Cimarosa

Download or read book Domenico Cimarosa written by Nick Rossi and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English about Domenico Cimarosa, his more than 65 operas and his sacred and secular vocal music, his keyboard music, and his various works for solo instruments and ensembles. This is also the first authoritative book on Cimarosa since an Italian biography published in 1939. Since that earlier tome was published, many important discoveries have come to light. The authors completed most of their research work at the library of the Conservatorio di musica S Pietro a Majella in Naples. Their efforts have uncovered new information on the composer's marriages, wives, children, actual performance locations, dates of first performances of his operas, and his professional appointments and contacts. The first half of the book is devoted to a chronological description of Cimarosa's life and provides background material on the customs of the times and contemporary descriptions of the music conservatories in Naples where Cimarosa studied, as well as those in Venice where he was appointed Maestro. The second part presents an alphabetical listing of Cimarosa's more than 65 operas, including alternate names for those that were produced on different stages under different names. Included with each opera is a simple outline of the plot, the cast of characters and their voice ranges, and basic information about the structure of the music itself.
