It challenges received wisdom about Chinese popular religion, which, until now, presented all Chinese deities as mere functionaries and bureaucrats. The essays in this volume eloquently document the existence of other metaphors that allowed Chinese gods to challenge the traditional power structures and traditional mores of Chinese society. The authors draw on a variety of disciplines and methodologies to throw light on various aspects of the Chinese supernatural. The gallery of gods and goddesses surveyed demonstrates that these deities did not reflect China's socio-political order but rather expressed and negotiated tensions within it. In addition to reflecting the existing order, Chinese gods shaped it, transformed it, and compensated for it, and, as such, their work offers fresh perspectives on the relations between divinity and society in China.

Book excerpt: In 1930 Dumézil wrote an article in which he defended the Indo-European character of the Indian varnas. In 1986 he was completing his final 25 Esquisses, research proposals the aim of which was to allow his model of the 'idéologie tripartie' of Indo-European traditions to be applied to his 'disciples'. According to this model Indo-European traditions were typified by a threefold division into functions of society, the world of the gods, and the heroic traditions. These were the functions of sovereignty, power and 'fertility'. This theoretical model was elaborated by Dumézil in a large number of books and articles. Between 1930 and 1986 he broadened enormously the amount of data on which his model was based. To do so he had regularly to adapt and reformulate his model. This was not without consequences for the material which he had interpreted earlier on. In this study a detailed description is given of this process of reformulation and reinterpretation and the conclusion is that the totality of the various models does not, despite its aesthetic attraction, satisfy the criteria which should be set for scientific models.

The articles in Volume 2 are organized as follows: the performing arts; general surveys of anglophone Caribbean drama, theatre, and society; festivals, theatre companies, and productions; British and American drama; dance and music theatre; Carnival and calypso; and cinema screenings in Trinidad. Volume 2 additionally contains an exhaustive annotated and cross-referenced chronological bibliography of Walcott’s journalism up to 1990. The co-editor Christopher Balme has written a searching introductory essay on a central theme – here, a survey of West Indian theatre and Walcott’s engagement with it, particularly the idea of a ‘National Theatre’, coupled with an illustrative discussion of the playwright’s seminal dramatic spectacle Drums and Colours.

I called out to him, and we exchanged greetings. While he asked what I was doing these days, I noticed that he was much older and walked slower using a cane. Then he told me, “Don, I have known you from 1950, and I have served with you in many different occasions. I stayed in touch with most of the men who served with me. When I first met you, you were just a young kid—aged nineteen and always getting into trouble. Then you got married and settled down. I always said you would amount to something good when I noticed the way you made your choices in your careers. Looks like you did okay.” After a year, I read in the paper that he passed away. Today I don’t see much of my son’s ex-wife (who I felt was as if she were my own daughter), and I still wonder why things like that happened. To walk away from a marriage of eighteen years and three children . . . I repeat: “Why?” Many of my military buddies are gone to the military heavens, so are many of my Ashton hometown school guys that I attended school with. I am still around. I have to wonder if what did happen in that cold watery accident in New Jersey when I found myself down in that river—was it just the way the brain reacts to prevent one from becoming brain-dead from fright, or was it the work of some supreme act from God?
