This book examines the corruption of the capitalist plutocracy of the United States not only by documenting the prevalent acts of corruption themselves, but by also delving into the depths of American ideological/religious dogmatism. The book is a voice of protest in defense of humanity, ethics, socialist democracy, and freedom from Christian fundamentalism. Book excerpt: "Based on extensive interviews with mostly former cult members, this book chronicles the history of the Church of God of Union Assembly from its beginning around World War I up to recent times. Founded by a charismatic, unlettered leader, C. T. Pratt, who forcefully broke away from the Holiness COG organization, the church eventually found its home base in Dalton, Georgia. It grew steadily at first and then more rapidly as the great Depression ravaged workers in the mostly rural area of north Georgia. The group set up communal living practices and spread branches of the church across the country, recruiting among the most displaced with a message of social uplift and anti-capitalism, even as its religious practices became increasingly authoritarian and exploitative. If C. T. Pratt exhibited some characteristics of a violent cult leader, his son, who took over the church as his father suffered from ill-health, took these tendencies to a new level that eventually caught the attention of secular authorities. His son, in turn, was even worse--and placed the church on the path to financial ruin. Amazingly, the church survived its three authoritarian leaders and still exists"--

Sharing stories from her own life and others', author and speaker Krissy Nelson uncovers a powerful truth: As children of God we are made to live fearlessly. Concealed within the familiar story of David and Goliath are three supernatural weapons David used to slay the giant of fear. These weapons are hidden in plain sight for us to discover--and also to learn to use, because what God gave David, he also gives us. Nelson dives into Scripture and explores how to position yourself to see fear for what it is: a giant that dares defy the army of the living God. It is time to run boldly toward freedom. You are equipped for battle, and you are not alone--God will fight for you!

Book America and Its Guns

    Book Details:
  • Author : James E. Atwood
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-06-01
  • ISBN : 1610978250
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book America and Its Guns written by James E. Atwood and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Atwood contends that the thirty thousand gun deaths America suffers every year cannot be understood apart from our national myth that God has appointed America as "the trustee of the civilization of the world" and even "Christ's light to the nations." Because these purposes are noble, and we are supposedly a good and trustworthy people, violence is sometimes "required" and gives license to individuals to carry open or concealed weapons, which "save lives" and can even be "redemptive." Atwood, an avid hunter, cautions that an absolute trust in guns and violence morphs easily into idolatry. Having spent thirty-six years as a Presbyterian pastor fighting against the easy access to firearms, one of which took the life of a friend, he uses his unique experience and his biblical and theological understanding to graphically portray the impact guns have on our society. He documents how Americans have been deceived into believing that the tools of violence, whether they take the form of advanced military technology or a handgun in the bedside stand, will provide security. He closes with a wake-up call to the faith community, which he says is America's best hope to unmask the extremism of the Gun Empire.

Book Fear Not Tomorrow God Is Already There Devotional

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth Graham, daughter of Billy and Ruth Bell Graham, tackles the fear and uncertainty readers confront when facing daunting challenges and times of uncertainty. Graham empathizes with readers who feel inadequate, outnumbered, overpowered, ill-equipped, or even beyond hope. She then leads a discovery of the all-sufficiency of God and his power, demonstrating how to replace fears with hope and anticipation. Graham writes, “If you are hoping to find within these pages ten steps to greater confidence or positive self-talk for conquering anxiety or how to rise above your challenges to reach your destiny, you won’t find what you are looking for here at all. This book is not about overcoming your shortcomings to build a better you. Growing an unshakable trust in God as you face your tomorrows is not about self-improvement or mastering your circumstances, but about God—who he is, what he does, and why we can trust him.” Graham writes not from an ivory tower of theological discourse, but from the battlefields of brokenness and recovery. From that vantage point she offers evidence that, whether readers’ frightening tomorrows are self-inflicted, other-inflicted, or simply life-inflicted, they may hold fast to the simple yet powerful truth, Fear not tomorrow, God is already there. Each chapter explores a distinct attribute of God and an illustration from God’s Word demonstrating each attribute at work in the face of daunting challenges. Then Graham unpacks enlightening encounters of God’s presence and power, impacting the lives of everyday people today. Graham weaves a tapestry of the all-sufficiency of God and his power to enfold our todays and tomorrows in his mighty grip. Readers will catch sight of his power, learn to rest in his peace, and be filled with anticipation for the future. Fear not tomorrow, God is already there!

  • Author : Shane Claiborne
  • Publisher : Brazos Press
  • Release : 2019-03-05
  • ISBN : 149341707X
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Beating Guns written by Shane Claiborne and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ★ Publishers Weekly starred review Parkland. Las Vegas. Dallas. Orlando. San Bernardino. Paris. Charleston. Sutherland Springs. Newtown. These cities are now known for the people who were shot and killed in them. More Americans have died from guns in the US in the last fifty years than in all the wars in American history. With less than 5% of the world's population, the people of the US own nearly half the world's guns. America also has the most annual gun deaths--homicide, suicide, and accidental gun deaths--at 105 per day, or more than 38,000 per year. Some people say it's a heart problem. Others say it's a gun problem. The authors of Beating Guns believe it's both. This book is for people who believe the world doesn't have to be this way. Inspired by the prophetic image of beating swords into plows, Beating Guns provides a provocative look at gun violence in America and offers a clarion call to change our hearts regarding one of the most significant moral issues of our time. Bestselling author, speaker, and activist Shane Claiborne and Michael Martin show why Christians should be concerned about gun violence and how they can be part of the solution. The authors transcend stale rhetoric and old debates about gun control to offer a creative and productive response. Full-color images show how guns are being turned into tools and musical instruments across the nation. Charts, tables, and facts convey the mind-boggling realities of gun violence in America, but as the authors make clear, there is a story behind every statistic. Beating Guns allows victims and perpetrators of gun violence to tell their own compelling stories, offering hope for change and helping us reimagine the world as one that turns from death to life, where swords become plows and guns are turned into garden tools.
