Book Gods and Rollercoasters

Download or read book Gods and Rollercoasters written by Crispin Paine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This worldwide study examines how religion gets into theme parks – as mission, as an aspect of culture, as fable, and by chance. Gods and Rollercoasters analyses religion in theme parks, looking at how it relates to modernism, popular culture, right-wing politics, nationalism, and the rise of the global middle class. Crispin Paine argues that religion has discovered a major new means of expression through theme parks. From the reconstruction of Biblical Jerusalem at the Holy Land Experience in Orlando, through the world of Chinese mythology at Haw Par Villa in Singapore, to the great temple/theme park Akshardham in New Delhi, this book shows how people are encountering and experiencing religion in the context of fun, thrills and leisure time. Drawing on examples from six of the seven continents, and exploring religious traditions including Christianity, Daoism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, Gods and Rollercoasters provides a significant contribution to the study of religion, sociology, anthropology, and popular culture.

Book excerpt: People have their limits. Some choose to ignore them. God’s power and love have no limits. So why do Christians put limits on their relationship with Him? We could be pursuing greater knowledge, experiencing deeper intimacy, and abiding in freer joy… and yet we routinely settle for mediocrity in our spiritual lives. But if you are ready to explode your self-imposed limits, Dr. Richard Blackaby can guide you through powerful and passionate insights revealed in this new book. By contrasting mediocrity with the spirituality of the great “heroes of the faith,” Dr. Blackaby shows you that you need not settle for less than God intends for you. God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people like you…but only when you allow Him to enlarge your spiritual capacity and overcome your self-imposed limits. “I hope this book inspires you to aim for a new level of walking with God. I want you to reach heights in your spiritual life that you never dreamed were possible, to experience God working through your life in a powerful new dimension, to hear words from God that will dramatically change your life and your world. As Veronica grew and evolved into womanhood, the petals of her life began to open up to welcome the wonders of earthly treasures. With each attempt she made to receive what would have been rightly hers, the powers that be would throw a dark spell over the opportunity, causing her to have doubts and fears of the pathway on which she trod. Still, the public harbors misconceptions, and that means millions suffer needlessly. That includes millions of couples who can't understand why their lives together are so hard—often despite many attempts at therapy. The simple truth is: Everyone knows someone with adult ADHD. Yet we often misattribute the symptoms to anxiety, depression, or even laziness, selfishness, “addictive personality,” or moodiness. Some assume that ADHD means "little boys with ants in their pants." In fact, childhood hyperactivity goes "underground" as the person matures, resulting in a mentally restless state. Meticulously researched and written by Gina Pera, Is It You, Me, or Adult ADHD? helps you recognizing the behaviors where you least expect them and developing compassion for everyone wrestling with unrecognized ADHD symptoms. It also offers: —Explanations from preeminent experts —Plenty of real-life details —Easy-to-understand, detailed advice on the best treatment options and practical solutions. The revolutionary message is one of hope for millions of people—and a joyous opportunity for a better life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book to let people know how grief can affect you when it seems you've lost everything and how God will walk you through your recovery and restoration if you just let Him. I was raised in church and had a strong foundation in the LORD, so I believed God could get me through anything. But that's easy to say and not so easy to put into practice when God allows extraordinary trials to come into your life. There was a time when I thought God didn't love me. I thought He hated me. I thought I was cursed. I was so angry with God that I blamed Him for letting terrible things happen to my family. Each day when my feet hit the floor, I suffered in silence, worried about what others would say or think. Driving my car off a cliff looked like the only way out of my trials. But my autistic son saved my life. Read the extraordinary story of how that happened.

Book Come Ride With Me

Download or read book Come Ride With Me written by Lorraine Dube and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lorraine Dube went for her annual mammogram on September 4, 1997, she asked the technician for compression films of her upper chest area, right front shoulder, and underarm areas. She explained that, for almost a year, she had felt a pulling sensation in these areas. Although her doctor had assured her many times that it was nothing, probably just an after effect of the radiation treatment she had after her lumpectomy seven and a half years earlier, she still had a nagging concern about that odd tight feeling in her chest. When the technician took the films, it was five times more painful than when she did the routine compression shots of the breast. Tears were running down Lorraine´s face, but she not dare move. Four days later, her doctor called. Lorraine, this is Dr. V. How long have you had that mass in your chest? You have to see a surgeon immediately. Lorraine asked herself why Dr. V had ignored her concerns all those times. She reprimanded herself for not seeking a second opinion when she first experienced that pulling sensation and did not feel comfortable with his lack of response to her concern. So many things went through her mind, yet memories of her own lumpectomy were just the tip of the iceberg. She relived the horror of more than thirty years earlier when, as a mother of three small children at age 22, she heard those terrible words from Dr. DeVillers about her 26-year old husband´s cancer condition & four to six weeks the doctor had said. All of this flashed through her mind at speed warp ten ... literally in just a few seconds. Her life path had taken her through quite a few coaster rides throughout her 57 years, but all those were kiddy rides compared to this one. And so, the mother-of-all-roller coaster rides of life began with that fateful phone call from Dr. V. Lorraine Dube beat the odds. She beat that aggressive Stage 3 sarcoma lodged in her chest wall. But the battle was not without many, many scars. In the process, she lost five ribs, all her lymph nodes in the right arm area, a piece of her clavicle, most of the use of her right arm and hand "and nearly her life. After seven surgeries, chemotherapy treatments, experimental brachytherapy and countless battles with infection, including a flesh eating bacteria inside her chest wall, Lorraine Dube was cancer free but left suffering from chronic, debilitating pain, a souvenir from her ordeal that she would carry for the rest of her life. Lorraine was a survivor, always had been. But this time it was different. Why had God spared her from the terrible cancer and its aftermath of surgery, infections and lost body parts " only to leave her suffering from such unimaginable pain? The cancer was gone, but at what cost? What the heck was she supposed to do with the rest of her life? On her way to figuring it out, her daughter suggested that she write a book about her life. Don´t worry about writing a best seller, Mom. Just write it from the heart. Write it for your grandsons. Five years later, Ms. Dube began writing this book, the story of her life. She tells the story of her life from the earliest recollections of childhood, through the sometimes rough years of adulthood all with a few purposes in mind. She wants to tell her grandsons about her history, their history, and to relate all her adult experiences some good, some bad, some easy, some tough, all with the purpose of showing them that they, too, are survivors like their Memere. Her message: Life may, indeed, be a roller coaster, but nothing is impossible. Somewhere along the line, writing this book became Lorraine´s therapy. She began to make peace with, and sense of, the chronic pain that gripped her and kept her from leading the life she wanted, the life she expected. After all, her golden years were supposed to be her happiest. This b
