Download or read book Gods Ghosts and Gangsters written by Avron Boretz and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2010-10-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demon warrior puppets, sword-wielding Taoist priests, spirit mediums lacerating their bodies with spikes and blades—these are among the most dramatic images in Chinese religion. Usually linked to the propitiation of plague gods and the worship of popular military deities, such ritual practices have an obvious but previously unexamined kinship with the traditional Chinese martial arts. The long and durable history of martial arts iconography and ritual in Chinese religion suggests something far deeper than mere historical coincidence. Avron Boretz argues that martial arts gestures and movements are so deeply embedded in the ritual repertoire in part because they iconify masculine qualities of violence, aggressivity, and physical prowess, the implicit core of Chinese patriliny and patriarchy. At the same time, for actors and audience alike, martial arts gestures evoke the mythos of the jianghu, a shadowy, often violent realm of vagabonds, outlaws, and masters of martial and magic arts. Through the direct bodily practice of martial arts movement and creative rendering of jianghu narratives, martial ritual practitioners are able to identify and represent themselves, however briefly and incompletely, as men of prowess, a reward otherwise denied those confined to the lower limits of this deeply patriarchal society. Based on fieldwork in China and Taiwan spanning nearly two decades, Gods, Ghosts, and Gangsters offers a thorough and original account of violent ritual and ritual violence in Chinese religion and society. Close-up, sensitive portrayals and the voices of ritual actors themselves—mostly working-class men, many of them members of sworn brotherhoods and gangs—convincingly link martial ritual practice to the lives and desires of men on the margins of Chinese society. This work is a significant contribution to the study of Chinese ritual and religion, the history and sociology of Chinese underworld, the history and anthropology of the martial arts, and the anthropology of masculinity.

Book Of Gods Gifts and Ghosts

Download or read book Of Gods Gifts and Ghosts written by Terence Heng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do individuals inscribe their spiritual identities and diasporic ethnicities in the city? Through a series of sociological and photographic essays, Terence Heng maps the various rituals, collectives, individuals and events that characterise Chinese religion practices in Singapore. From spirit mediums to the Hungry Ghost Festival, each chapter engages with the social, the spatial and the ephemeral, and in so doing it will explore the significance and relevance of Chinese religion in a secular nation-state; reveal the strategies and tactics used by diasporic individuals to perform and retain their identities; uncover the importance of flow and fluidity in the making of sacred space; and evidence the value and efficacy of the use of photographs in social research. Of Gods, Gifts and Ghosts is a ground-breaking exploration into the intersections between visual sociology, cultural geography and creative photographic practice. A visual monograph that gives equal importance to image and text, it interrogates the tensions between sacred and profane, official and unofficial, state and individual, physical and spiritual, peeling away the myriad layers of the spiritual imagination.

Book A Time of Lost Gods

Download or read book A Time of Lost Gods written by Emily Ng and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traversing visible and invisible realms, A Time of Lost Gods attends to profound rereadings of politics, religion, and madness in the cosmic accounts of spirit mediumship. Drawing on research across a temple, a psychiatric unit, and the home altars of spirit mediums in a rural county of China’s Central Plain, it asks: What ghostly forms emerge after the death of Mao and the so-called end of history? The story of religion in China since the market reforms of the late 1970s is often told through its destruction under Mao and relative flourishing thereafter. Here, those who engage in mediumship offer a different history of the present. They approach Mao’s reign not simply as an earthly secular rule, but an exceptional interval of divine sovereignty, after which the cosmos collapsed into chaos. Caught between a fading era and an ever-receding horizon, those “left behind” by labor outmigration refigure the evacuated hometown as an ethical-spiritual center to come, amidst a proliferation of madness-inducing spirits. Following pronouncements of China’s rise, and in the wake of what Chinese intellectuals termed semicolonialism, the stories here tell of spirit mediums, patients, and psychiatrists caught in a shared dilemma, in a time when gods have lost their way.

Book Needles Herbs Gods and Ghosts

Download or read book Needles Herbs Gods and Ghosts written by Linda L. Barnes and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did the West discover Chinese healing traditions? Most people might point to the "rediscovery" of Chinese acupuncture in the 1970s. In Needles, Herbs, Gods, and Ghosts, Linda Barnes leads us back, instead, to the thirteenth century to uncover the story of the West's earliest known encounters with Chinese understandings of illness and healing. As Westerners struggled to understand new peoples unfamiliar to them, how did they make sense of equally unfamiliar concepts and practices of healing? Barnes traces this story through the mid-nineteenth century, in both Europe and, eventually, the United States. She has unearthed numerous examples of Western missionaries, merchants, diplomats, and physicians in China, Europe, and America encountering and interpreting both Chinese people and their healing practices, and sometimes adopting their own versions of these practices. A medical anthropologist with a degree in comparative religion, Barnes illuminates the way constructions of medicine, religion, race, and the body informed Westerners' understanding of the Chinese and their healing traditions.

Book excerpt: Recently some 300 exorcists flocked to Poland for a week-long congress to examine the current fashion for vampirism the world-over and the apparent connection between this fascination and a surge in demonic possession. This comes as the world is experiencing an explosion of ancient occultism combined with wicked fascination for ghosts and all things paranormal. In the United States alone, there are now more than two hundred thousand registered witches and as many as 8 million unregistered practitioners of “the craft.” On college and high school campuses, vampires, werewolves, and other “creatures of the night” are esteemed as objects of desire and idolized by young men and women who view them as cult icons of envious mystical power. Church goers are enchanted by the darkness as well. An April 13, 2011 article “Mysticism Infecting Nazarene Beliefs” was preceded only a few days before by a Telegraph article describing how a “surge in Satanism” inside the church has sparked a “rise in demand for exorcists” within traditional religious settings.” Why is this happening now? God’s Ghostbusters provides shocking answers in this collaborative work by Gary Bates, Chuck Missler, Gary Stearman, Thomas Horn, Nita Horn, Russ Dizdar, Donna Howell, Derek Gilbert, Sharon Gilbert, Michael Hoggard, Noah Hutchings, Terry James, John McTernan, Jeff Patty, Fred DeRuvo, and Douglas Woodward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All four books in 'Gods & Ghosts', a series of contemporary fantasy novels by T.H. Morris and Cynthia D. Witherspoon, now in one volume! Gods & Ghosts: Jonah Rowe knew that he didn't know everything about his abilities as an 11th Percenter - a human who could access the power of their auras. But he knew enough to not believe in the myths of the Greek Gods. Those were stories for kids and Hollywood. Eva McRayne wanted nothing more than to get back to her Hollywood life after a senseless tragedy derailed it. So when she and her film crew went to Rome, North Carolina to film an episode for her show, Grave Messages, she had no idea that she was walking straight into a trap. One that only Jonah Rowe could help her escape from. Gods & Thieves: Eva never thought in a million years she could get kidnapped. Maybe what the books said about Greek heroes and hubris had a point. She was too good of a fighter. There was no way Ares could get his hands on her. Jonah Rowe was willing to work with anyone or anything to get Eva back home. Even if that meant working with the Devil himself. He had no idea that he was falling right into the plans that Hades had for him. For Eva. Jonah was done being the hero. He would take what he wanted. Live how he wanted. The rest of the world be damned. Gods & Reapers: After Joey gets seriously injured, Eva is beside herself. She's the first to admit it: Joey Lawson is more than just her cameraman. He's her brother; the one solid through her time as the Sibyl. She couldn't give up on him, despite the threats that the spirit of his attacker piled on her head. So she ran to Jonah Rowe, the man who had become her best friend and savior. But Jonah has trouble of his own in the form of Mary Anne Greene, the country sweetheart he had met on the road to be with Eva. And the longer the two of them are around each other, the harder Jonah has fallen for her. But the sweet Mary Anne isn't all that she seems to be, and Eva knows it. She can feel it. And by the gods, if Jonah is hurt by this woman, there will be hell to pay. Gods & Monsters: Eva had gone from one fire straight into another. After her run-in with a deranged Spirit Reaper and Persephone, she was sure that returning to filming the episodes for Grave Messages would be a vacation. How could she possibly get into any more trouble than she'd already been in? But there was something much worse on the horizon. Much darker. Much more dangerous. Poveglia Island.

Book Savage Gods Silver Ghosts

Download or read book Savage Gods Silver Ghosts written by Ehor Boyanowsky and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2010-03-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They met at a poetry reading, but Ehor Boyanowsky and British Poet Laureate Ted Hughes became friends through their shared — and unquenchable — passion for fishing. Against the backdrop of the Dean River, one of the greatest steelhead rivers in the world, the two men explored their mutual regard for the planet's wild places. Boyanowsky draws on personal correspondence, interviews, and journal entries to recreate their encounters in the 1980s and '90s, when Hughes was at the height of his power and influence, and to paint an intimate portrait of a lifelong outdoorsman, conservationist, and artist. The book also goes behind the creative process as fishing logs transmute into poetry, talk becomes action, and the queen's bard composes impromptu bawdy verse on the drive to a stag party. Boyanowsky realizes he's been privileged to see a Hughes who is different from the public persona. In these tales of male friendship and the primal act of fly fishing, the reader gets glimpses of the "nature red in tooth and claw" that drew Ted Hughes to Canada — and rekindled his love of the natural world.
