Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantial collection of loosely aphoristic philosophy, which I am apt to term 'supernotational', embraces the Christian dichotomy of Devil and God in such fashion that one is left in no doubt that the former is alpha and the latter omega and, hence, that God, or godliness, is the repudiation of all that the Devil stands for. But this is a torturously complex and protracted path, which is why 'The Omega Book' is anything but an easy read, despite the efforts of its author to make it as logically and stylistically consistent as possible, and to offer real hope that victory for God over the Devil is still possible even in this day and age, when cynicism with regard to the possibility of religious progress seems to be at an all-time high, and largely because of erroneous religious conceptions that pander to the one even as they ostensibly acknowledge the other.

Book How to Tell God from the Devil

Download or read book How to Tell God from the Devil written by Arthur Roy Eckardt and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Tell God From the Devil is the first book to depict the relationship among comedy, the Devil, and God. Drawing from Jewish and Christian theories, Eckardt describes comedy as a means to distinguish the divine from the diabolic. He presents a thorough critique of efforts throughout history to justify God in the presence of radical evil and suffering. How to Tell God From the Devil is a sequel to Eckardt's fascinating earlier study Sitting in the Earth and Laughing. Eckardt employs a variety of historical, psychological, sociological, philosophical, and theological sources. He discusses and assesses such diverse figures as Martin Luther, Reinhold Niebuhr, Zen Buddhists, Conrad Hyers, Nancy A. Walker, Jon D. Levenson, and Harvey Cox. How to Tell God From the Devil is an exceptional work, and will be significant and enjoyable for sociologists, theologians, philosophers, and specialists concerned with the study of humor.

  • Author : David Alcalde
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Download or read book Cosmology Without God written by David Alcalde and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God a superfluous hypothesis for modern cosmology? According to the normal understanding of modern science, the answer should be affirmative because modern science is supposed to be free of metaphysical and theological presuppositions. However, despite its self-proclaimed neutrality regarding metaphysics and theology, modern science is full of metaphysical and theological presuppositions. These can be summarized as a mechanistic understanding of nature, a reduction of God to an external agent in competition with natural processes, and creation to a worldly mechanism. These presuppositions are deficient and untenable, and they remain unconscious for the most part in the dialogue between science and theology, making it intellectually impossible because of the reduced notions of God, nature, and creation assumed. Using the coherent and unreduced image of God and nature provided by the Christian doctrine of creation ex nihilo, Fr. David Alcalde intends to uncover and criticize the incoherent theological assumptions inherent in a concrete branch of modern science, which is modern cosmology. The author points out the presence of these inadequate theological presuppositions in both the theologians who use modern cosmology to offer scientific proof for the existence of God and the atheistic cosmologists who use their science to reject the idea of God.

Book In the Age of Prose

Download or read book In the Age of Prose written by Erich Heller and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guiding theme of these essays is the fate of the imagination and the condition of art in the modern world, where both appear to be enfeebled by scientific hubris, undermined by psychological self-questioning and compromised by political disaster. Erich Heller traces this predicament with subtlety and profundity, from Hegel's and Nietzsche's diagnoses to the various truces and manoeuvres through which remarkable victories have nonetheless been achieved - such as the comic triumphs of Wilhelm Busch. As elsewhere in Professor Heller's work, Thomas Mann's attempt to outwit and redeem his circumstances through art - 'despite' them, as he said himself - occupies a central place. Three of the present essays are devoted to him. Others consider Kleist, Fontane, Hamsun, Karl Kraus and the crucial figures of Hölderlin (who plays such a central role in Heidegger's later philosophical writings) and Rilke. Written with feeling, and the distinctive elegance and wit that have characterized all of Professor Heller's work, the essays here reaffirm the vital interdependence of literature and human values.
