Download or read book Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line written by Deepa Anappara and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the “extraordinary” (The Washington Post) debut novel that “announces the arrival of a literary supernova” (The New York Times Book Review),“a drama of childhood that is as wild as it is intimate” (Chigozie Obioma). WINNER OF THE EDGAR® AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE WOMEN’S PRIZE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Time • The Washington Post • NPR • The Guardian • Library Journal In a sprawling Indian city, a boy ventures into its most dangerous corners to find his missing classmate. . . . Through market lanes crammed with too many people, dogs, and rickshaws, past stalls that smell of cardamom and sizzling oil, below a smoggy sky that doesn’t let through a single blade of sunlight, and all the way at the end of the Purple metro line lies a jumble of tin-roofed homes where nine-year-old Jai lives with his family. From his doorway, he can spot the glittering lights of the city’s fancy high-rises, and though his mother works as a maid in one, to him they seem a thousand miles away. Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line plunges readers deep into this neighborhood to trace the unfolding of a tragedy through the eyes of a child as he has his first perilous collisions with an unjust and complicated wider world. Jai drools outside sweet shops, watches too many reality police shows, and considers himself to be smarter than his friends Pari (though she gets the best grades) and Faiz (though Faiz has an actual job). When a classmate goes missing, Jai decides to use the crime-solving skills he has picked up from TV to find him. He asks Pari and Faiz to be his assistants, and together they draw up lists of people to interview and places to visit. But what begins as a game turns sinister as other children start disappearing from their neighborhood. Jai, Pari, and Faiz have to confront terrified parents, an indifferent police force, and rumors of soul-snatching djinns. As the disappearances edge ever closer to home, the lives of Jai and his friends will never be the same again. Drawing on real incidents and a spate of disappearances in metropolitan India, Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line is extraordinarily moving, flawlessly imagined, and a triumph of suspense. It captures the fierce warmth, resilience, and bravery that can emerge in times of trouble and carries the reader headlong into a community that, once encountered, is impossible to forget.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Is my baby in heaven?" This is the most important question a grieving parent can ask. And even if the little one is someone else's child, the issue remains: What happens to children?those unborn, stillborn, or youngsters?when they die? Can you hope to see them again? Can you let go of your fear and guilt? Can God's love soothe a wound so jagged? With scriptural authority and the warmth of a pastor's heart, bestselling author John MacArthur examines the breadth of the entire Bible and reveals in this compelling book the Heavenly Father's care for every life. "I have sat by the grave of our daughter and son and wondered out loud if my belief that Hope and Gabriel are in heaven has any solid scriptural support. John MacArthur offers truth from God's Word that puts the doubts of any grieving parent to rest. Safe in the Arms of God reveals that confidence of heaven for the child you love is based on much more than mere sentimentality; it is revealed in the Word of God and reflective of the very heart of God." ?Nancy Guthrie, author of Holding On to Hope

With wisdom, urgency, and keen prophetic insight, Hamon lays the biblical foundation for this final level of warfare and shows how we, as the church, can prepare to work in unity to become the army of the Lord. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska in the 1960's was truly the Last Frontier. It had recently achieved statehood as the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959, about two years before I arrived with my husband, an Alaskan Aleut. The population at the time was mostly native Alaskans of different tribes such as Eskimo, Aleut, Tlingit, Alaskan Athabaskans and others. In the village where I lived the natives were part Aleut, Russian, Irish and Swede. The village in 1960 was a small, close-knit community of about 60 people. They were all related to each other in some way. When I lived there I was the only white person from the lower 48th in the village. These are entries from a diary I kept in a spiral-bound notebook. They are an account of my day-to-day life as a young married woman living in Alaska. I hope you see the hand of God working in my life, and the many times He was present, miraculously protecting me and delivering me from harm, both physically and spiritually. I promised my sister, before she died of cancer, that I would write this book about my life and adventures in Alaska.

Book Not God s Type

Download or read book Not God s Type written by Holly Ordway and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a glorious defeat. Ordway, an atheist academic, was convinced that faith was superstitious nonsense. As a well-educated college English professor, she saw no need for just-so stories about God. Secure in her fortress of atheism, she was safe (or so she thought) from any assault by irrational faith. So what happened? How did she come to “lay down her arms” in surrender to Christ and then, a few years later, enter the Catholic Church? This is the moving account of her unusual journey. It is the story of an academic becoming convinced of the truth of Christianity on rational grounds — but also the account of God’s grace acting in and through her imagination. It is the tale of an unfolding, developing relationship with God — told with directness and honesty — and of a painful surrender at the foot of the Cross. It is the account of a lifelong, transformative love of reading and the story of how a competitive fencer put down her sabre to pick up the sword of the Spirit. Above all, this book is a tale of grace, acting in and through human beings but always issuing from God and leading back to Him. And it is the story of a woman being brought home.

Book Do You Have Alligator Arms

Download or read book Do You Have Alligator Arms written by James W. Moore and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular author James W. Moore draws on an old football term to explore the ways people let their fear stand in the way of living life and loving God to the fullest. The term "alligator arms" refers to a would-be pass receiver who fails to stretch out full length to catch the ball, because he fears an impending tackle; he's more interested in protecting himself from the hard hit than catching the ball. This fearful attitude results in fumbled passes, in other words, lots of failure and frustration. "Having alligator arms" is an ideal analogy for fearfully holding back rather than living life fully. In Do You Have Alligator Arms?, Moore explores what it means to let go of fear and purposefully embrace life, commitment, faith, hope, love, God, and others.

Book Running Into the Arms of God

Download or read book Running Into the Arms of God written by Patrick Hannon and published by ACTA Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This spiritual memoir draws on Hannon's wealth of experience, his family life, childhood and professional life as a high school teacher to show how God is present in every aspect of our lives, how the seemingly mundane events in our lives can reveal the presence of God. For example, the simple act of sitting on a bench at dawn in the middle of San Francisco becomes a spiritual wakening and a morning prayer of praise for an entire city. This collection of poignant, heartbreaking and hilarious short stories is organized around the Liturgy of the Hours. This is the first book from up and coming author Patrick Hannon. We are releasing it in hardcover and paperback at the same time to garner reviews in the secular press while offering an affordable option to our bookstores.
