Book God s Laws Sin Law Grace and Obligation in Pauline Theology

Download or read book God s Laws Sin Law Grace and Obligation in Pauline Theology written by Paul Hughes and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""What shall we do?"" was the question people asked John the Baptist as they came to be baptized. Others asked this question of Jesus during his ministry in Galilee, and of Peter on the Day of Pentecost. After two thousand years, even many confirmed Christians remain confused. May a Christian work on the Sabbath? Is the Sabbath Saturday or Sunday? Must we eat Kosher? Paul said that Christ fulfilled the Law, so what are the rules for today? Must Christians still follow the Ten Commandments, or have all the commandments been abolished in favor of ""love""? If there is no Law, is anything still a sin? What are we required to do, or forbidden to do, and how much can we get away with, and still be saved? The New Testament, especially in the practical teachings of the Apostle Paul, contains adequate answers to many of these questions and provides principles for making Godly decisions even on debatable matters never dreamt of two thousand years ago.

Book The Oneness and Simplicity of God

Download or read book The Oneness and Simplicity of God written by Barry D. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That YHWH is numerically one is foundational to the theology of the Hebrew Bible. Christian theologians historically have affirmed that there is a more fundamental type of oneness attributable to God. God is one not merely in the sense of being the only God, but also in the sense of being simple or non-composite, having no parts of any kind. In this way, God is said to be an absolute unity. After a consideration of all the evidence, Barry D. Smith reaches the conclusion that there is no basis for ascribing simplicity to God. The simplicity doctrine is not found in Scripture and the traditional arguments used to establish it are unconvincing. In addition, the recent defenses of the simplicity doctrine prompted by Alvin Plantinga's work Does God Have a Nature? are unsuccessful. It should not be thought, however, that the rejection of divine simplicity means that by default God must be conceived as composite, not even as a perfect composite with maximally great, God-making properties. Rather, there is a third option: God should not be conceived as either simple or composite. The question of in which mode God has attributes or exemplifies properties should be set aside.

Book The Struggle to Define God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert A. Butterfield
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2017-04-19
  • ISBN : 1498242952
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book The Struggle to Define God written by Robert A. Butterfield and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-19 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about religious struggle studies four texts from postexilic Judah and applies them first to Judah and then, importantly, to modern America. Two of these texts--the books of Jonah and Job--speak out in favor of the theology of grace and against the theology of retribution, as advocated by the Jerusalem hardliners. This struggle to define God continues even today. Despite the biblical evidence--especially the example of Jesus--many Americans still believe in the God of retribution. Two other texts--the book of Ruth and the story of Rahab--demonstrate that if people reject xenophobia/nativism and misogyny, the entire community is blessed. Since xenophobia/nativism and misogyny are rampant in modern America, this message is rather timely. The last chapter argues that it is the mission of both synagogues and churches to define God correctly and then to help people overcome their resentment and prejudices and become partners with God, but that many predominantly white churches have failed in their mission, as evidenced by the fact that so many of their members voted for Donald Trump.

Book You Only Think God Is Silent

Download or read book You Only Think God Is Silent written by Julie Ann Allen and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have those moments where we encounter pain, grief, and struggles and wonder why God would allow this. We have heard those semitheological platitudes about our struggles and questions. Author Julie Ann Allen experienced those when her husband of fourteen years was buried alive on a work site. Julie Ann learned what it was to stand at a crossroad generated by tragedy and make a choice. That moment was a defining moment in her life. She could either ignore God and blame him for the tragedy or rely on God to sustain her, transform her, and reconstruct her life as she passed through this profound tragedy. Julie Ann writes about Gods voice, provisions, and how she eventually chose divine happiness by the hand of God. If you have ever asked any of these questions, Where was God? Why did God allow this? Why cant I hear God? then reading You Only Think God Is Silent is a wonderful place to discover ways you can turn to God and hear the answers to those questions.

  • Author : Wendy Farley
  • Publisher : Presbyterian Publishing Corp
  • Release : 2015-09-04
  • ISBN : 0664259863
  • Pages : 183 pages

Download or read book The Thirst of God written by Wendy Farley and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is a rich tradition of wonderful women and other contemplatives who are great resources for thinking differently about Christianity. They emphasized divine love, human compassion, and the radical possibilities of contemplative practices. They were not afraid to criticize the church and indeed thought of their challenge as crucial to their faith. We do not have to lose faith with the beautiful wisdom of this story of intimate and compassionate love, dwelling among us and within us, if we do not want to." —from the acknowledgments and note to readers To those seeking a more open, progressive approach to Christian faith, the Christian past can sometimes seem like a desert, an empty space devoid of encouragement or example. Yet in the latter years of the Middle Ages a quiet flowering of a more accessible, positive approach to Christian belief took place among a group of female mystics, those who emphasized an immediate, nonhierarchical experience of the divine. In this enlightening volume, Wendy Farley eloquently brings the work of three female mystics—Marguerite Porete, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and Julian of Norwich—into creative conversation with contemporary Christian life and thought. From alternatives to the standard, violent understandings of the atonement, to new forms of contemplation and prayer, these figures offer us relevant insights through a theology centered on God's love and compassion. Farley demonstrates how these women can help to refresh and expand our awareness of the depth of divine love that encompasses all creation and dwells in the cavern of every human heart.
