Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, archaeologically documented, is the story of the religion of the Goddess. Known by many names--Astarte, Isis, Ishtar, among others--she reigned supreme in the Near and Middle East. Beyond being worshipped for fertility, she was revered as the wise creator and the one souce of universal order. Under her, women's roles differed markedly from those in patriarchal Judeo-Christian cultures. Women bought and sold property and traded in the marketplace, and the inheritance of title and property was passed from mother to daughter. How did the change come about? By documenting the wholesale rewriting of myth and religious dogmas, Merlin Stone details a most ancient conspiracey: the patriarchal reimaging of the Goddess as a wanton, depraved figure. This portrait that laid the foundation for one of culture's greatest shams--the legend of Adam and fallen Eve.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Goddess written by Christine Downing and published by Crossroad Publishing. This book was released on 1984 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Goddess is at once a scholarly and intensely personal journey that shows how the great female figures of archaic and classical Greece can serve to illuminate the present and future of women everywhere. Moreover, the author uncovers the patriarchal representation of the more ancient matriarchal traditions with a sensitivity and sympathy that allows the strength of the goddess to emerge as images of liberation for men as well as women. Here is a radical and brilliantly new understanding of an ancient and honored theme. We find not just jealous Hera but also she who is eternal maiden and solitary widow. Persephone is both the virgin goddess of spring and the awesome queen of death and the underworld. Athene's courage and wisdom, too often seen as masculine attributes, are discovered as authentically feminine. Through her subtle interweaving of the many variants and layers of tradition with her own dreams and experiences, Christine Downing communicates the pertinence of each figure she addresses not just to isolated incidents but to the whole of life. With an energy at once tender and powerful, this book enables the reader to enter deeply into the labyrinth where myth is the image of life and life the image of myth." -- Provided by publisher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wonderfully unique resource for women who are continually searching for new insights in the area of woman-affirming faith and worship." --Reverend Sharon Vandegrift United Methodist Chaplain Drexel University Childhood religious images of judgment, punishment, unworthiness, and shame, of male saviors, messiahs, and Higher Powers, pursue all women into adulthood. Many women realize they must leave behind these traditional concepts and images for a more authentic spirituality. Yet they find, to their dismay, that the male symbols of God are deeply rooted in their psyches and difficult to transform. In this book, the poignant personal memories of women of all ages and lifestyles are interwoven with the collective story of women buried in the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Bible. Together, these women explore the lost glory of Eve, Lilith, and Mary. They teach us to plumb the depths of our relationships with our mothers, our bodies, and ourselves; our sexuality and vulnerability; and our journey into old age. Each chapter offers a rich tapestry of poetry, ritual, story, and meditation, a splendid invitation to join a circle of women in search of woman-affirming spirituality. "Patricia Lynn Reilly guides her readers towards solutions. . . .This book is an excellent map filled to overflowing with provocative exercises and concrete suggestions." --Gloria Karpinski Author of Where Two Worlds Touch: Spiritual Rites of Passage "It beautifully combines the best of the poignant with the best of the practical and the political." --Publishers Weekly

Download or read book God and the Goddesses written by Barbara Newman and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular belief, the medieval religious imagination did not restrict itself to masculine images of God but envisaged the divine in multiple forms. In fact, the God of medieval Christendom was the Father of only one Son but many daughters—including Lady Philosophy, Lady Love, Dame Nature, and Eternal Wisdom. God and the Goddesses is a study in medieval imaginative theology, examining the numerous daughters of God who appear in allegorical poems, theological fictions, and the visions of holy women. We have tended to understand these deities as mere personifications and poetic figures, but that, Barbara Newman contends, is a mistake. These goddesses are neither pagan survivals nor versions of the Great Goddess constructed in archetypal psychology, but distinctive creations of the Christian imagination. As emanations of the Divine, mediators between God and the cosmos, embodied universals, and ravishing objects of identification and desire, medieval goddesses transformed and deepened Christendom's concept of God, introducing religious possibilities beyond the ambit of scholastic theology and bringing them to vibrant imaginative life. Building a bridge between secular and religious conceptions of allegorized female power, Newman advances such questions as whether medieval writers believed in their goddesses and, if so, in what manner. She investigates whether the personifications encountered in poetic fictions can be distinguished from those that appear in religious visions and questions how medieval writers reconcile their statements about the multiple daughters of God with orthodox devotion to the Son of God. Furthermore, she examines why forms of feminine God-talk that strike many Christians today as subversive or heretical did not threaten medieval churchmen. Weaving together such disparate texts as the writings of Latin and vernacular poets, medieval schoolmen, liturgists, and male and female mystics and visionaries, God and the Goddesses is a direct challenge to modern theologians to reconsider the role of goddesses in the Christian tradition.
