It begins when he hears the voice of the late American distance runner Steve Prefontaine say, "See; find J." Steven Jenny interprets the Prefontaine voice as guiding him to find Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory. Simultaneous to the pursuit of these three goddesses, Steven Jennys dream of a 3on3 basketball event outside Portlands Rose Garden arena begins blossoming. He continues seeking support for his dream of Nikefest, a full-fledged sports festival while seeking his victory zephyr. Book Goddesses of Kathmandu Valley

Download or read book Goddesses of Kathmandu Valley written by Arun Gupto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South Asia goddesses are conceptualized and worshipped in a fascinating range of forms — from cosmic beings to bacterial manifestations, from human-like appearances to creatures with animal and insect semblances. This book maps the diverse identities of goddesses through metaphors of grace, rage and knowledge, and offers an in-depth insight into femininity, sexual politics, ritual worships, religion, ecology and gender. Grace manifests as motherly sublimity, warring protectors, and varying personifications of sexuality. Rage encapsulates the fearful aspects of goddesses and independent identities of women. Knowledge evokes associations with order, reason and intellect in conflating gendered binaries of body/mind and nature/culture. The volume explores how these deity attributes are expressed and embedded through anthropomorphic as well as inorganic forms of nature, beautiful women, multi-legged and many-armed animals, epistemic selves, demonic beings, glamorous personifications as also grotesque sub-humans. A methodological combination of critical theory, mythological and philosophical concepts, along with popular ethnographic narratives and lived experiences, this monograph will greatly interest scholars and researchers of religious studies, cultural studies, folklore, art, literature, sociology and gender studies, especially those interested in Nepal and Hinduism.

Book The Goddess and the Shaman

Download or read book The Goddess and the Shaman written by J. A. Kent and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the resurgence of magical and shamanic healing in the world today. Recovering from disease, pain, and mental illness often means addressing otherworldly causes such as soul loss, soul fragmentation, or invasive spirits. Interviewing modern shamanic practitioners and sharing her own experiences as a psychotherapist and healer, author J. A. Kent, PhD, shows how ritual practice and mystical experience can be used as tools to foster profound spiritual and psychological growth. Through exploration of otherworldly phenomena, the Western mystery traditions, and the author’s psychotherapy case studies, this book shows how the Goddess represents the numinous reality of the universe while the Shaman represents the archetypal figure that can access the other side to bring forth knowledge and healing.

Book The Soul of Medicine

    Book Details:
  • Author : John R. Peteet
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2011-12-15
  • ISBN : 1421403951
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book The Soul of Medicine written by John R. Peteet and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent should spiritual information be part of a patient’s medical assessment? How should physicians respond when patients refuse life-saving care on religious grounds? Should doctors pray with their patients? Questions such as these raise deeper ones about the goals of medicine and the nature of healing. In a set of engaging and candid essays, The Soul of Medicine explores the role and influence of spirituality in clinical practice, professionalism, and medical education. The contributors to this volume approach this topic from their own spiritual perspectives—Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, New Age / Eclectic, secular, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Christian Scientist. Their thought-provoking essays provide rich insights not only into the needs of patients with various world views but also into how spirituality influences the practice of medicine. When their own spiritual issues arise in medical practice, physicians rely on their professionalism, ethics, and education. To better understand how various world views are incorporated into clinical work, doctors must ask themselves—as these contributors have—a series of important questions: What insights about life and healing does your faith provide? How does your faith challenge or reinforce contemporary medicine? How do you assess and address spirituality in clinical practice? How do your own beliefs influence your interactions with patients? The Soul of Medicine encourages medical students and practitioners to recognize the spiritual dimensions of medicine, to consider how these dimensions inform their own education and practice, and to be compassionate about their patients’—and their own—religious beliefs.
