Book excerpt: Unbinding Christianity is a book that will be good news for some readers while stretching others in uncomfortable ways. It begins with the premise that traditional Christian teaching is focused on right beliefs while the life and teachings of Jesus was all about right living. The book represents a fresh voice for Christians who struggle to accept traditional beliefs by assuring them that Jesus himself said much more about right values than he did right beliefs. The goal of this book is to unbind Christianity from the wrappings of creeds, doctrines, dogma, and beliefs in order to make room for an understanding of what it means to be Christian defined by values that invites unity among Christians without the need for conformity of beliefs. One of the important by-products of a values-based Christianity is that it paves the way for Christians with different beliefs to find common ground with one another while also freeing them to build bridges of understanding with non-Christian. WORDS OF PRAISE If you have found it impossible to continue believing in some of the doctrines the church has taught to be essential and don't know if you can continue being a Christian, Jan Linn offers some much needed guidance. --Craig Watts Unbinding Christianity is a thought-provoking argument for expansion of Christianity's often employed litmus tests of inclusion and rejection. --Joshua Santana This book is a wake-up call to all of us who choose to follow Jesus, a challenge for us to rethink what it truly means to be Christian. --Heather Cargill

  • Publisher : SUNY Press
  • Release : 1991-01-01

Download or read book Re Figuring Theology written by Stephen H. Webb and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a rhetorical treatment of Karl Barth's early theology. Although scholars have long noted the rhetorical power of Barth's work, calling it volcanic and explosive, this book uses rhetoric to illuminate the peculiar nature of his prose. It displays a Barth whose prose is radically unstable and inseparable from his theological arguments. The author connects Barth's early theology to the Expressionism of the Weimar Republic. He develops an original theory of figures of speech, relying on the philosophies of Paul Ricoeur and Hayden White, to delve more deeply into the particular configurations of Barth's writings. Nietzsche's hyperbole and Kierkegaard's irony are examined as rhetorical precedents of Barth's style. The closing chapter surveys Barth's later, realistic theology and then suggests ways in which his earlier tropes, especially the figures of excess and self-negation, can serve to enable theology to speak today.

Download or read book God Yes God No written by Frans Komhoff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can science rule out God? To properly understand the history of the universe and humanity, one can turn to any of the three religions discussed herein, but gaining insights into the theories of scientists like Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking is a much better idea. Kömhoff takes the interested layman past God and through a series of eminent scientists on a timeless journey spanning fourteen billion years, from the Big Bang to the present day. In understandable steps, the author guides the reader through the various fields and introduces them to theories, contradictions, philosophers, black holes, evolution, logic, relativity, God proofs, and the Big Bang singularity. The appendices add, in understandable language, in-depth introductions to the fascinating theories the author discusses. According to Kömhoff, we live in the Cosmos of Coincidence. This sheds a completely new light on the Big Questions: What is man? Where do we come from? What is our place in the cosmos? What is the meaning of our existence? Where are we going? And, last but not least, is there a God? With present-day knowledge, his final conclusion is: yes, science can rule out God as the creator of man and the universe, but no, science cannot rule out the existence or non-existence of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, God Really Is 'Up There ' provides answers for many of life's questions. It has been written by a man whose earliest childhood memory is of shivering in the winter cold while trying to sleep on a bale of hay in a drafty barn somewhere in war-torn (WWII) Europe. His Mother was doing her best to comfort him, all the while listening to the bombers roaring over-head, and wondering what had happened to her husband, the boy's Father. It later came to light that he had been captured by Russian soldiers, and was bound for the labor camps of Siberia. How the Father escaped, found his wife and child, and once reunited, they came to the United States, is a story for another day. Suffice it to say that, bringing only their clothes and old pots and pans, upon arrival they began to live the American Dream. (For more, read About The Author at the end of the book.) The American Dream abounds with opportunities and obstacles for the native-born and immigrant alike; the author has been no exception - he encountered both. Amidst the victories and defeats, he came to realize that God Almighty really was and is up there, ever vigilant and always looking out for him. That very God can do the same for you. If you're not sure that God really is up there, or you are going through tough times, you need to read this book.

It is deeply thought provoking for anyone seeking a true comprehension of God. The story explains why one should never place their faith in religion above their love for God and God's creation, which includes other people. Make no mistake about it; Yes GOD Is, is also intended to be a clear, hard and strict criticism of all religions. It is not a criticism of God-loving people who attend or pastor churches of any religion. Yes GOD Is, a "must read" for those who are considering entering into or are part of the clergy.

Book A Fellowship of Differents

Download or read book A Fellowship of Differents written by Scot McKnight and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling book about diversity and community, McKnight shares his personal experiences and his study of the Apostle Paul to answer this significant question: What is the church supposed to be? Local churches matter far more than we often know because they determine what Christian life looks like for you. The church McKnight grew up in was a fellowship of sames and likes. Mostly white, same beliefs about everything, same tastes in music and worship and sermons and lifestyle. But the church God designed, says McKnight, is meant to be a fellowship of difference and differents. A mixture of people from all across the map and spectrum: men and women, rich and poor, black and white, and everything in between. A Fellowship of Differents explores the church as God’s world-changing social experiment of bringing unlikes and differents to the table to share life with one another as a new kind of family, showing the world what love, justice, peace, reconciliation, and life together is designed by God to be.
