Book A Friendship Like No Other

Download or read book A Friendship Like No Other written by William A. Barry and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live in the love of a God who desires a relationship with you. Throughout A Friendship Like No Other, renowned spiritual director William A. Barry, SJ, explores the premise that God wants to relate to us as a close friend. Barry has contemplated this idea—radical for many Christians—throughout his lifetime, and he explains that it actually traces back to the “developing revelation of God contained in the Bible.” A Friendship Like No Other offers three well-supported and practical sections: prayerful exercises to help lead you to the conviction that God wants your friendship; a close look at objections to this idea; and reflections on experiencing the presence of God and discerning those experiences. Brief, personal meditations are woven throughout. Grounded in biblical tradition and with a clear focus on Ignatian spirituality, this book offers a fresh, heart-changing approach to living joyfully in the freedom of the divine embrace.

Friendship with God transforms us. As we learn to trust God as our Divine Friend, it has a transforming effect on our whole lives. It affects how we pray, our relationships with each other and the way we understand our everyday lives. Book excerpt: How do I know it's God? is one of the most commonly asked questions of new and mature Christians alike, and the aim of God Conversations is to both equip and inspire the reader and show them that hearing the voice of the Spirit is accessible to everyone who chooses to follow Jesus. Most Christians know that God speaks, yet struggle with how to recognise his voice in their everyday lives. What does God's voice sound like? How do we know if what we're hearing is from God? Stories of God talking to his people abound throughout the Bible, but we usually only get the highlights. We read; "And God said to Joseph; 'Go to Egypt'," and then; "Mary and Joseph left for Egypt." We don't get a blow-by-blow description of how God spoke. We don't receive a detailed explanation of how they knew it was God, and we don't get to see what was going on inside their heads as they acted on what they'd heard. In God Conversations, international speaker and pastor Tania Harris shares insights from her own journey about hearing God's voice. You'll get to eavesdrop on some contemporary conversations with God in the light of his communication with the ancient characters of the Bible. Part memoir, part teaching, this unique and creative collection of stories will help you to recognise God's voice when he speaks and how to respond when you do.

Book excerpt: For so many of us, our friends are like family members--we lean on them through our highest highs and our lowest lows--but sometimes those friendships don't turn out quite as we hoped. Bible teacher Kelly Needham debunks our world's constricted, narrow view of friendship and casts a richer, more life-giving, biblical vision for friendship. In Friend-ish, Kelly Needham reminds us that we were called to more than halfhearted friendships and lukewarm connections. We need something more stable, secure, and sacred. We were designed for real friendship--but the difficult truth is that too many of us are settling for less. Kelly deconstructs what Scripture says about the gift of friendship and takes a closer look at the distorted view that most of us have instead. As she shares the lessons she's learned from experience, Kelly paints her own glorious vision of what Christian friendship could look like. With hard-fought wisdom, a clear view of Scripture, and a been-there perspective, Friend-ish teaches us how to: Recognize symptoms of idolatry and toxic dependency Boldly ask for what we need from our community of friends Understand and address the problems that arise in friendship--from neediness to discord Recognize when it's time to end an unhealthy friendship Reorient toward the purposeful, loving relationships we all crave that ultimately bring us closer to God Find the friends you need and start to become that friend for others Join Kelly as she challenges you to view your chosen family in a new light, gain a vision of friendship according to Jesus, and finally enjoy friendships as God intended.

Book excerpt: "I believe He Calls Me Friend is one of the most important books of our day, from one of the last living prophets of the Civil Rights Era." –Nick Hall, Founder of Pulse movement, author of Reset: Jesus Changes Everything What if friendship is the key to changing the world? As a follow-up to his landmark work One Blood, Dr. John Perkins helps readers take the next step to make justice and love a reality. Sometimes people ask Dr. Perkins how to make a difference in the world, his simple answer is this, "Be friends. First with God. Then with others—every kind of other you can think of. Because the simple, powerful, messy, explosive truth is: the world is changed one friendship at a time." In He Calls Me Friend, Dr. Perkins argues that God is not distant and disconnected. He is the Friend who woos us, died for us, and lives within us. This Friend fills our empty places and shows us how to be friends with others. Along the way, Dr. Perkins shares his life experiences, explores biblical stories, and features profiles from several of his own personal friendships. In a world that’s growing increasingly fragmented, isolated, and lonely, discover the power of friendship from a true expert in the art.

Book He Calls Me Friend

Download or read book He Calls Me Friend written by Patrick J Vaughan and published by Sealed By Truth. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He calls me friends is titled and means just what it says; a book about friends and friendships. Each and every friend and friendship encounter we have and will have is special with each and every person in its own special and unique way. We will have different interests and things in common with each and every one also. Just because we bond with one a certain way does not mean we will have that same bond and interest with another, although you could. I believe there are qualities that are specific in each and every friendship and relationship though. The literal translation and definition through various dictionaries describe friend and friendship as companions, partners, supporter, one attached to, those kind to, and one to have true affection for. These are literal definitions but have real personal characteristics. The definition of your friend or friends could include any one of the descriptions above or all of them. I started writing this book after encouraging another on how he was an exceptional friend. I told him that he was a true friend that distance could not separate. Whether this person was close or far, he remained a close friend to many. I told him that I believed that if ever one of his friends had a need, he would be there for them no matter what. He had kept contact with them frequently, showing them they were special and thought of. In our society of social media, it is easier to do that and we should take full advantage of it when it comes to friends. You can really compile a number of friends on social media, in fact be a friend of a friend. Social media can be used to accumulate friends, but also have to admit that I really am not close to all in that circle. This person above also would give up what he had if that friend had a need; “Sacrifice”. He considered everyone he had contact and experiences with to be a friend. He even considered family members friends. That should always be true, but sometimes it isn't. He also kept up these friendships over long periods of time; “Faithfulness”. I believe there are many out there and many who are reading this who have done the same, but I am afraid that I have not been one of them and maybe that describes you also. There are probably also just as many or more who haven't. I sit curious about certain friends I had in High School. I reflect on those whom I knew while in the Air Force in California but do not know what has become of them. Distance separated me from those whom I felt close. One of the main aspects of friendships and having friends is being a friend. That seems easy, but there are many who may have failed at this. I am interested in learning and moving forward in that destination and conquest. It is never to late to have more friends and to be a friend. I will have to admit at the start that while in a relationship and friendship I was hard to get know initially, but when opened up, made and had great friends. I can remember my Father telling me when I was a teenager that if I had five good friends that stood by me all through my life I would be a happy and successful man. At the time he said that, I had exactly that, five great friends. I now still know these but are not as close as I would like to be.We have grown apart by distance, families, interest, and differences. If people are not under the definition of friends for life, they are or become merely acquaintances. Acquaintances are those you know and know about, but don't really know.
