Book How Not to Spend Your Senior Year

Download or read book How Not to Spend Your Senior Year written by Cameron Dokey and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rule #1: If at all possible, don’t pretend to be something you’re not. Specifically, don’t play dead. Trust me on this one. I did it, so I should know. Jo O’Connor has spent her whole life moving around. When it comes to new schools, there’s not a trick in the book about starting over that Jo doesn’t know. But life is about to teach her a new trick: how to disappear entirely. Rule #2: Always expect the Spanish Inquisition, no matter what anyone else does. They have to move again. Now. This very night. Jo knows better than to argue. Her dad is the key witness in a major case against a big-time bad guy. But Jo just can’t resist one last visit to the school where she’s been so happy. All she wants is to say good-bye. That can’t cause any problems, can it? Rule #3: Never assume you can predict the future. Now Jo’s one last visit has landed her smack in the middle of a ghost story. Specifically, her own. By the time it’s over, she’ll have a whole new set of rules about what’s real, what’s make-believe, and—most of all—what’s important.

Book Operations in Afghanistan

Download or read book Operations in Afghanistan written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Defence Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-07-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report looks at operations in Afghanistan since 2006 and makes further recommendations for the anticipated draw-down of forces. UK Forces were deployed in Helmand Province in Afghanistan for three years from 2006 without the necessary personnel, equipment or intelligence to succeed in their mission. Mistakes were made as a result of a failure in military and political coordination. The decision to move UK Armed Forces into the South of Afghanistan in early 2006 was not fully thought through. The Committee is concerned that the MoD did not anticipate that the presence of the Armed Forces in Helmand might stir up a hornets' nest, especially as much of the intelligence was contradictory. Senior military advisers should have drawn attention to the need for force levels to be sufficiently robust to cope with an unpredictable conflict. The Committee is disturbed that the Secretary of State was told that commanders on the ground were content with the support they were being given in Helmand when clearly they were not. After only a matter of months in Helmand, the nature of the UK Mission changed, with serious strategic implications. The MoD did not respond quickly enough to changes in Taliban tactics. The MoD should prioritise the protection of personnel. The Government's room for manoeuvre regarding the number of troops that could be withdrawn from Afghanistan as part of an immediate transition is necessarily limited. More emphasis needs to be placed on capacity building within the political system if long-term success is to be achieved.

Book excerpt: In Rhythm Makers: The Legendary Drummers of Nashville in Their Own Words, Tony Artimisi documents through extensive interviews the work of some of the most influential drum kit players in popular music today, opening a window onto one of the most vibrant music scenes in modern American history. Telling their stories in their own words, each legendary figure walks readers through the realities of how musical opportunities arise in Nashville, how the recording process has changed over time, what it is like to drum behind some of the top artists in American music, and how one makes it as a professional drummer. Artimisi’s subjects together have performed on literally thousands of recordings, from master recordings to demos, jingles to sound-alikes. Having played behind nearly everyone who passed through Nashville, from Dolly Parton and Elton John to Glen Campbell and Johnny Mathis, Eddie Bayers Jr. regales readers with stories of the many areas in the industry he worked to build his legendary career. Master drummer Jerry Kroon, whose credits include work with Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and numerous others, shares his secret for maintaining good relationships with various personality types in music. Percussionist extraordinaire Tom Roady, who has recorded with Wilson Pickett, The Dixie Chicks, and Kenny Chesney—too name but a few—offers insights into what makes a drummer in his recollection of his career start. One of the most inventive instrumentalists, Kenny Malone, who has worked with Waylon Jennings, Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash and many more, discusses his own unique experiments in drumming technique in order to maintain his creative edge. Finally, Tommy Wells, whose career beginnings in Motown led him to Nashville, where he drummed for Charley Pride, The Statler Brothers, and The Charlie Daniels Band, offers a true insider’s perspective offering insights into how jingle and sound-alike sessions operate, which can be a valuable part of the professional sideman’s work. This work is the ideal for readers interested in the history of country music and the Nashville recording scene more generally, record and music production, popular music, and drumming as both art and profession.

Book Inflectional Defectiveness

Download or read book Inflectional Defectiveness written by Andrea D. Sims and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradigmatic gaps ('missing' inflected forms) have traditionally been considered to be the random detritus of a language's history and marginal exceptions to the normal functioning of its inflectional system. Arguing that this is a misperception, Inflectional Defectiveness demonstrates that paradigmatic gaps are in fact normal and expected products of inflectional structure. Sims offers an accessible exploration of how and why inflectional defectiveness arises, why it persists, and how it is learned. The book presents a theory of morphology which is rooted in the implicative structure of the paradigm. This systematic exploration of the topic also addresses questions of inflection class organization, the morphology-syntax interface, the structure of the lexicon, and the nature of productivity. Presenting a novel synthesis of established research and new empirical data, this work is significant for researchers and graduate students in all fields of linguistics.
