Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Lee Strobel trains his investigative sights on the hot-button question: is it really credible to believe God intervenes supernaturally in people's lives today? This provocative book starts with an unlikely interview in which America's foremost skeptic builds a seemingly persuasive case against the miraculous. But then Strobel travels the country to quiz scholars to see whether they can offer solid answers to atheist objections. Along the way, he encounters astounding accounts of healings and other phenomena that simply cannot be explained away by naturalistic causes. The book features the results of exclusive new scientific polling that shows miracle accounts are much more common than people think. What's more, Strobel delves into the most controversial question of all: what about miracles that don't happen? If God can intervene in the world, why doesn't he do it more often to relieve suffering? Many American Christians are embarrassed by the supernatural, not wanting to look odd or extreme to their neighbors. Yet, The Case for Miracles shows not only that the miraculous is possible, but that God still does intervene in our world in awe-inspiring ways. Here’s a unique book that examines all sides of this issue and comes away with a passionate defense for God's divine action in lives today. Also available: The Case for Miracles Spanish edition, kids' edition, and student edition.

Book In God s Path

  • Author : Robert G. Hoyland
  • Publisher : Ancient Warfare and Civilizati
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0199916365
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book In God s Path written by Robert G. Hoyland and published by Ancient Warfare and Civilizati. This book was released on 2015 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just over a hundred years--from the death of Muhammad in 632 to the beginning of the Abbasid Caliphate in 750--the followers of the Prophet swept across the whole of the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Their armies threatened states as far afield as the Franks in Western Europe and the Tang Empire in China. The conquered territory was larger than the Roman Empire at its greatest expansion, and it was claimed for the Arabs in roughly half the time. How this collection of Arabian tribes was able to engulf so many empires, states, and armies in such a short period of time is a question that has perplexed historians for centuries. Most recent popular accounts have been based almost solely on the early Muslim sources, which were composed centuries later for the purpose of demonstrating that God had chosen the Arabs as his vehicle for spreading Islam throughout the world. In this ground-breaking new history, distinguished Middle East expert Robert G. Hoyland assimilates not only the rich biographical and geographical information of the early Muslim sources but also the many non-Arabic sources, contemporaneous or near-contemporaneous with the conquests. The story of the conquests traditionally begins with the revelation of Islam to Muhammad. In God's Path, however, begins with a broad picture of the Late Antique world prior to the Prophet's arrival, a world dominated by the two superpowers of Byzantium and Sasanian Persia, "the two eyes of the world." In between these empires, in western (Saudi) Arabia, emerged a distinct Arab identity, which helped weld its members into a formidable fighting force. The Arabs are the principal actors in this drama yet, as Hoyland shows, the peoples along the edges of Byzantium and Persia--the Khazars, Bulgars, Avars, and Turks--also played important roles in the remaking of the old world order. The new faith propagated by Muhammad and his successors made it possible for many of the conquered peoples to join the Arabs in creating the first Islamic Empire. Well-paced and accessible, In God's Path presents a pioneering new narrative of one the great transformational periods in all of history.

Book excerpt: My journey on the path to spiritual enlightenment began at a very young age—at the age of one and a half. I was violently thrust into the arena of good and bad, violent and nonviolent. In order to cope with the violence in my life, I connected with my source. Outwardly, I was a happy-go-lucky child, while inwardly, I was trying to rationalize and trying to understand how a person, like my father, who walked the earth, could grow into a monster—because for the most part, we all start out as good human beings. There are some cases where a soul is born with an evil predisposition, but for the most part, people start out good and the environment they are born into plays a large role in shaping the person they ultimately become.

At 49, I was 120-150 pounds overweight, and felt helpless and hopeless in overcoming my lifelong struggle with food addiction and obesity. Confronted with declining health and comfort, I asked God for His help, turning the struggle over to Him. ... I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit for the first time. God did a miracle in my life that night in April 2006 and began a powerful transformation, both in my heart and body. By the power of the Holy Spirit, I was filled with joyous anticipation of God's ability in my life, and I began to lose weight. Early into the transformation, God told me to write a journal of my experiences and the lessons He would teach me in the journey of transformation. He directed me to seek publication of the journal of the first 80 pounds lost, and gave me a vision of beginning a spiritual support group at my church for women struggling with these issues."

The ideas in this book will change your view of how health is actually obtained. It will challenge your understanding of your body and your obligation to honor it. It will cause you to waken your obligation to honor one of Gods most precise gifts, your body. Whether you are Christian or not, you will never think of yourself, your life and body in the same way after reading this book. The health protocol explained in this book is the next revolution in Christianity. This revolution concerns the recognition that the temple of God is within us because our body literally is a temple of God. And it is a far more important temple than one built of wood, steel and brick. Do not feel that I am either accusing or ridiculing you about your present lifestyle and eating habits. On the contrary, this book is meant to encourage you to become aware of what God wants for us. Book On God s Path The Unfolding Story of Humanity

Download or read book On God s Path The Unfolding Story of Humanity written by S. Craig George and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On God's Path: The Unfolding Story of Humanity is an optimistic, realistic and pious view of humanity's role on the stage of creation. In this generation a variety of competing stories have been told to explain where we came from and where we are going, each story told with sincere conviction. These stories seem to turn on two centers: science and religion and they are often placed in opposition. The theme of this book is that the truths of science and religion need not be viewed as mutually exclusive, but complementary in the big picture. With significant advances in both science and theology in the recent past we have much more information to attempt to incorporate in humanity's story than ever before. More dots to connect give us a better chance of bringing into focus a much larger and more inclusive picture of where we came from and where we may be going. The story of humanity, as presented in this book, begins with the first moment of the cosmos and traces the rise of the human physically, socially and morally. It engages the reader to consider humanity's trajectory. With a Christian perspective respectful of all faiths, the author weaves the human religious impulse and the Spirit of Christ together brightly into the tapestry of Creation. Written with the lay reader in mind, On God's Path presents a wide spectrum of mainstream contemporary scientific and theological ideas in surprisingly straightforward and creative ways. Part of the author's objective in this book is to challenge readers to expand their thinking about God and science and to reconsider their own roles in advancing the human story.

Book God s Strategy in Human History

Download or read book God s Strategy in Human History written by Paul Marston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Forster and Marston have delivered a stellar book that attempts to present an exegetical and Scriptural framework for the content presented in the book. Instead of beginning from a set of deductive theological assumptions and then attempting to support that system from Scripture, Forster and Marston examine Scripture and attempt to build their case directly from the text. The authors unabashedly admit that their views are very similar to those of Arminian and Weslyan traditions, but they state in the beginning of the book that they do not want to be labeled with these names, but want to construct a theology that is in line with the teachings of the first 300 years of Christianity. Anyone who reads their appendix will come to understand that the teachings presented in this book were the orthodox consensus of the early Church for the first 300 years, and that it was Augustine who introduced serious deviations into the mainstream orthodox Christianity of his time. Forster and Marston begin by describing the battle that is being waged between God and the spiritual forces that oppose Him. They examine the book of Job and see how this relates to the overall struggle. Then the authors examine the 9th chapter of Romans to see if this book is dealing with election and individual destinies, or God's actions within human history. The authors do an excellent job of arguing for their opinion that this chapter is speaking about God's involvement in human history and it deals with God's choosing of one nation or individual over another nation or individual to accomplish His purpose. Other sections of interest in this book are the sections on foreknowledge and predestination and the chapters on faith and works. The section on faith and works was particularly interesting because it relies on much of the teaching of the new perspective which has shed much light on how a 1st century Palestinian Jew would have approached Scriptural issues. The research, argumenation, and exegesis in this book are solid so every chapter is excellent, but the ones mentioned above were two of my favorites."--Amazon.com.
