Book excerpt: Many people today are thirsty for God and feel a desire for an intense, personal prayer life that is deep and ongoing. But they encounter obstacles that prevent them from following the path seriously, and especially from persevering on it. Time for God was written with these desires and difficulties in mind. In Time for God, author Jacques Philippe mainly concentrates on mental prayer: prayer that consists of facing God in solitude and silence for a time in order to enter into intimate, loving communion with him. Practicing this kind of prayer regularly is considered by all spiritual masters to be an indispensable path that gives access to genuine Christian life—a path to knowing and loving God that empowers us to respond to his call to holiness addressed to each individual. Philippe draws on years of experience as a spiritual guide to illuminate the fundamental principles of mental prayer and describes some common mistakes and misconceptions that can lead it astray. With simplicity and clarity he explains the foundational principles for a healthy prayer life and gives advice for overcoming the various obstacles that arise when one sets off on the path of interior prayer.

Book excerpt: Many Christians resolve each New Year to be more faithful in their daily Bible reading. But after the first few days, we forget, fall behind, or become discouraged and give up altogether. We want to be more faithful in studying God's Word, but our hectic schedules and busy lives make it difficult. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak!Five Minutes with God is a distinct and exciting approach to daily Bible reading. Instead of a lofty goal of reading through the entire Bible or even the New Testament in one year, Five Minutes with God focuses on shorter passages so that the reader can absorb more of the text and apply it to everyday life. This second volume of Five Minutes with God steps the reader through the rest of the New Testament, Acts-Revelation, in 365 daily readings. By walking with and reflecting on the early church, we learn how to live the Christian life in the midst of a hostile culture. Each day's reading ends with a thought for further reflection and a call to prayer. By reading, reflecting, and praying, Five Minutes with God will help you come to know Him, love Him, and follow Him like never before.

Book Five Minutes to Midnight

Download or read book Five Minutes to Midnight written by Andrew Sieberhagen and published by . This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout biblical history the Jewish nation had a tradition of putting memorial stones in the places where God had clearly met with or rescued them. They served as reminders of God's faithfulness to them and to the generations that followed. As I reflect on ten years in Central Asia I am overwhelmed by the memories of how faithful God was. In these pages are some of our most significant memorial stories that reflect the pilgrimage of an ordinary person in the hands of an extraordinary God living among those who have never heard the Gospel. My hope is that as you read our stories you find reassurance knowing that God continues to use ordinary people! That Jesus is alive! And that our Father is faithful!

Book excerpt: In a calm, sustained style, the author breaks new ground in the ongoing feminist theological pilgrimage, one that will make traditionalists squirm and liberationists cheer." 'Choice' In 'The Power to Speak', Rebecca Chopp offers an exhilarating defense of feminist theology as proclamation and good news for all. Arguing for a critique and transformation of language, subjectivity, and politics, this thoughtful, engaged book opens new directions in feminist thought." Elizabeth Fox-Genovese A provocative treatment of feminist theology's deepest potential to transform the discipline through language." 'WATERwheel' Rebecca Chopp is developing an original theological position. Her interpretation of Christian faith and Christian theology as having to do primarily with 'emancipatory transformation' breaks through the individualistic pietism of modern liberalism as well as the provincialism of many of the liberation theologies." Book The Wisdom and Will of God

Download or read book The Wisdom and Will of God written by Riaan Engelbrecht and published by Riaan Engelbrecht. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we wish to walk in God’s victory, blessing, love, hope and glory, we need to walk in His Wisdom and in His Will. Regarding His Will, there is no greater testimony of our desire to follow Him as His children than by the prayer of asking the Lord that His will be done and not ours. And that “will” in the Greek language speaks of desire, purpose and intent. Therefore, Jesus instructs us to pray that the will of the heavenly Father - that same Sovereign Lord of Isaiah 61 – be done, and we are to seek, pursue and desire that God’s purpose, desire, intent and desire for us all in this world be done, and not our own. Regarding His Wisdom, we live in a time where man’s wisdom prevails, to such an extent that the world has now determined what is good, what is real and what truth is. Where the truth and wisdom of man prevail at the expense of God’s wisdom, then corruption of mind and spirit follows. We live in a time where often people have turned what was once evil into good. This is why it says in the Scriptures to seek wisdom for it begins with the fear of the Lord, for wisdom is to know what is good and what is evil and to know good from evil. And once we know what is right and wrong, we need to follow such a path. That is wisdom. The wisdom to know the way, the will, the path and the truth of God.

Download or read book A Time of Lost Gods written by Emily Ng and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traversing visible and invisible realms, A Time of Lost Gods attends to profound rereadings of politics, religion, and madness in the cosmic accounts of spirit mediumship. Drawing on research across a temple, a psychiatric unit, and the home altars of spirit mediums in a rural county of China’s Central Plain, it asks: What ghostly forms emerge after the death of Mao and the so-called end of history? The story of religion in China since the market reforms of the late 1970s is often told through its destruction under Mao and relative flourishing thereafter. Here, those who engage in mediumship offer a different history of the present. They approach Mao’s reign not simply as an earthly secular rule, but an exceptional interval of divine sovereignty, after which the cosmos collapsed into chaos. Caught between a fading era and an ever-receding horizon, those “left behind” by labor outmigration refigure the evacuated hometown as an ethical-spiritual center to come, amidst a proliferation of madness-inducing spirits. Following pronouncements of China’s rise, and in the wake of what Chinese intellectuals termed semicolonialism, the stories here tell of spirit mediums, patients, and psychiatrists caught in a shared dilemma, in a time when gods have lost their way.
