Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last century witnessed an explosion of theologies born out of the conviction that the science of evolution can and must contribute to our understandings of God, humanity, technology, suffering, sin, and the natural world. Even today, a sense of development continues to shape contemporary understandings of not only our origins, but also our place in the world now and in the future. Evolutionary theology's popularity continues to accelerate, but the conversation has lacked a critical, comprehensive, and accessible introduction to this field--until now. Evolutionary Theology provides a clear, critical, and concise synthesis of the most influential viewpoints in the field--from its origins in the eighteenth century to its maturation in the twenty-first. Topics include scientific contributions, philosophical ideas, dogmatic debates, and the development of process theology. Abril provides a springboard for researchers, teachers, and college students to critically engage the existing literature and develop new, constructive ideas. Evolutionary Theology is accessible to students, is helpful to scholars, and includes a wide range of perspectives from science, philosophy, and theology--Catholic and Protestant. It illustrates how integrating faith with science, as an inescapable and crucial dimension of modern life, leads to both fruitful discoveries and important challenges.

Excerpt: ... so Ill SCRIPTURE AND SCIENCE ON THE ORIGIN OF MAN--THE IMAGE AS A CREATION JN last lecture the Biblical account of man's origin was considered in its connection with the subject of man's nature. It was then shown that, in the account in Genesis, man's creation is referred to a special, supernatural act of God; that, while in it man appears as the head and crown of nature--the goal and resting-point of the whole creative movement--he is yet not a mere creature of nature, but stands in a peculiar relation to God, as bearing His rational and moral image, and standing under moral and religious responsibilities to Him. It was seen that this view of the spiritual nature and dignity of man is not overturned by what is advanced against it from the side of a materialistic monism, with its crude doctrine of a universal Substance, its denial of a distinct spiritual principle in man, its theories of psychical and physical parallelism, and its other forms of naturalistic negation. I am in the present lecture to consider the Biblical account of man's origin in relation to theories of natural evolution. The monistic doctrine on this point may be sufficiently summed up for our present purpose in the following propositions, derived from Haeckel: -- 1. There has been a slow and unbroken process of evolution from the lowest forms of organic life to the highest achievement of nature--Man. In Haeckel's view this 'biogenetic process, the slow development and transformation of countless organic germs, must have taken many millions of years--considerably over a hundred.'1 2. This evolution is the result of natural causes which do not imply intelligence or purpose.2 3. The immediate ancestors of man are the anthropoid apes. To quote our authority again: ..

Download or read book God and Humanity written by Nathaniel Gray Sutanto and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to apply Bavinck's theological anthropology to contemporary theological issues. Sutanto provides a sustained close reading of Herman Bavinck's contributions to theological anthropology and positions him in conversation with current and historical dialogues on embodiment, revelation, affect theory, phenomenology, the cognitive science of religion, ethics, race, covenant, and the beatific vision. Sutanto explores the holistic character of Bavinck's vision of humanity, suggesting ways in which his theological anthropology cuts across several potential binaries in contemporary discourse, between affect and reason, body and soul, animality and religiosity, unity and diversity, and between a this-worldly or other-worldly eschatology.
