Book excerpt: “We are homesick everywhere,” writes Tishani Doshi, “even when we’re home.” With aching empathy, righteous anger, and rebellious humor, A God at the Door calls on the extraordinary minutiae of nature and humanity to redefine belonging and unveil injustice. In an era of pandemic lockdown and brutal politics, these poems make vital space for what must come next—the return of wonder and free movement, and a profound sense of connection to what matters most. From a microscopic cell to flightless birds, to a sumo wrestler and the tree of life, Doshi interrupts the news cycle to pause in grief or delight, to restore power to language. A God at the Doorinvites the reader on a pilgrimage—one that leads us back to the sacred temple of ourselves. This is an exquisite, generous collection from a poet at the peak of her powers.

Book The Day I Pounded Upon God s Door

Download or read book The Day I Pounded Upon God s Door written by Mar'eh and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as suddenly as the chaotic and terrifying ordeal had all started it seemed as though all movement ceased in a split second. There was blood sprayed in every direction, inside and out and on the ground. I had blood coming out of my mouth, nose, and ears. The pounding of my heart was mammoth, I could feel it pounding almost at the top of my head. I was stoic as a statue; expressionless, motionless. The sound of the cold breeze whistled around me like a cruel joke. My jaws were locked, my body began to shiver, and then it shook uncontrollably. My teeth began to chatter. I had never before experienced such grief in all my life. My mind was just racing, like a fanatic, my heart pounding out of control. No one could have imagined the depth of my grief at that moment in time. Helpless and immobile, as I stood there watching my husband leave his body I felt that I would lose my mind. I screamed yet there was not a sound that would come out of my mouth! In one long uninterrupted silent scream I screamed at Peter not to die, I screamed at the other driver who caused this nightmare, I screamed at my pathetic legs for not being able to walk. I screamed for God, I screamed to Him for help. "My God, my God, please do not abandon me", I begged Him. Then from the depths of my soul came a gut-wrenching, primal scream that had been involuntarily released right out of my throat and from the pit of my stomach, a scream so agonizing that one of the men who was standing at the scene immediately covered his ears with both hands and sobbed like a child, his face contorted in obvious torture, his hands tightly squeezing the volatile sounds of my shrieks out of his ears. It was a scream that was no longer my own but that of a sadness that came from deep within the uncharted and dormant corners of my heart. It was a scream that awakened in me a state of reverence and dread of unmatched proportions. I fell to my knees and came pounding upon God's door that day! The speckles of broken glass reflected light like a thousand stars in a fallen sky. I watched in disbelief how we really have no control of our own lives, how with one blink of an eye your whole life can change, forever!

In Doors of Mercy, authors Fr. Jeffrey Kirby and Brian Kennelly answer these important questions. You’ll discover: -How the rebellion of Adam and Eve in the Garden affects our relationships with each other, with God, and with the world around us -Why God chose a rainbow as the sign of the covenant with Noah -The purpose behind Abram’s name being changed to Abraham -How the plagues in the time of Moses were not random but had symbolic meaning -How David’s Kingdom serves as a template, or blueprint, for the Church -The hidden meaning behind some of Jesus’s well known parables and why the Eucharist is the sign of the new and eternal covenant -How the Church and her saints have spread mercy throughout the centuries, with short biographies of Sts. Book Living Next Door to the God of Love

Download or read book Living Next Door to the God of Love written by Justina Robson and published by Spectra. This book was released on 2006-03-28 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do you run when a world is out to get you? AIs, Forged beings, superheroes, angels, and worlds that change in the blink of an eye—here is a richly imagined tale of ordinary redemption in an extraordinary world from one of the most provocative writers working today. . . . Francine is a young runaway looking to find a definition of love she can trust. In Sankhara, she finds a palace where rooms are made of bone, flowers, and the hearts of heroes. She finds a scientist mapping the territory of the human mind. She finds a boyfriend. And she finds Eros itself—incarnated in the androgynously irresistible form of Jalaeka. But not everyone is in love with the god of love. Unity, for one, wants to assimilate Jalaeka along with every other soul in the universe. And contrary to what everyone always believes, love alone can’t save the day. It will take something both more and less powerful than the human heart to save the worlds upon worlds at risk when gods collide. “For Robson, world-building is a literary device like any other, useful for exposing buried fears and desires to the light of day, no matter how strange the sun.”—New York Times Book Review

Book The Mystery of God s Will

Download or read book The Mystery of God s Will written by Charles R. Swindoll and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I don't think I've ever met anyone who hasn't struggled with the desire to know God's will. The problem is, this struggle often involved a great deal of confusion and worry." ?Chuck Swindoll Many people have the idea that if they could just somehow find that single planned direction, they would be effortlessly swept through life. But life is not like that. Probably the most misunderstood factor of discovering God's will is the thought that, If I do this, the struggles will end, the questions are over, the answers come, and I live hapily ever after. But that's not reality. Does that mean that God's will must remain opaque to us?that we must muddle and grope blindly through life with no clue to what He wants for us? "Not at all," says Charles Swindoll. In this groundbreaking book, Swindoll invites us to join him on a spiritual quest. "I believe God's will for us in this life is not some black-and-white objective designed to take us to an appointed destination here on earth as much as it is about the journey itself . . . and what matters to Him in our lives." The Mystery of God's Will overflows with practical insights, humor, and unforgettable stories that will de-mystify, clarify, and put your mind at ease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Door of God traces the development of devotional English-language poetry from its origins in ancient hymnody to its current twenty-first-century incarnations. The poems in this volume demonstrate not only that devotional poetry—poetry that speaks to the divine—remains in vigorous practice, but also that the tradition reaches back to the very origins of poetry in English. There is a sense in these pages that the tradition of lyric poetry that developed was nearly inevitable, given the inherent concerns of the genre. Featuring the work of poets over a three-thousand-year period, Before the Door of God places the devotional lyric in its cultural, historical, and aesthetic contexts. The volume traces the various influences on this tradition and identifies features that persist in devotional lyric poetry across centuries, cultures, and stylistic differences. To scholars, literary professionals, and general readers who find delight in fine poetry, this anthology offers much to contemplate and discuss.
