Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One would think that peace, a term that occurs as many as one hundred times in the New Testament, would enjoy a prominent place in theology and ethics textbooks. Yet it is surprisingly absent. Willard Swartley's Covenant of Peace remedies this deficiency, restoring to New Testament theology and ethics the peace that many works have missed. In this comprehensive yet accessible book Swartley explicates virtually all of the New Testament, relating peace -- and the associated emphases of love for enemies and reconciliation -- to core theological themes such as salvation, christology, and the reign of God. No other work in English makes such a contribution. Swartley concludes by considering specific practices that lead to peacemaking and their place in our contemporary world. Retrieving a historically neglected element in the Christian message, Covenant of Peace confronts readers anew with the compelling New Testament witness to peace.

Book God s Covenant with Animals

Download or read book God s Covenant with Animals written by J. R. Hyland and published by Lantern Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Genesis to Christ, the Bible testifies to God's love and concern for animals. The same self-centeredness that led to the violence and abuse that has marked human relations also caused the abuse and exploitation of animals. The Bible, argues the author, calls upon human beings to stop their violence and abuse of each other and all other creatures. It promises that when they do, the sorrow and the suffering that marks life on Earth will give way to the joy and peace that God ordained at the creation of the world. In these compelling essays, Rev. J. R. Hyland explores the Old and New Testament and reveals the prophetic voices that called for compassion over killing, and humane concern for all of God's creation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since conflict and war continue to threaten and destroy us, how do we find peace? And how do we understand the teaching of the bible about war and peace? In fifteen brief chapters, Lois Barrett explores the themes of war and peace in the Bible. She examines how God worked with the nation Israel in Old Testament times. Peace was found, not in waging war, but through faith in God. Security was won, not through human effort, but through trust in God’s actions. “Instead of trusting in modern weapons [horses and chariots], Israel was to trust God to win the battle,” the author writes. After Israel made a covenant with God at Schechem, God said, “I gave you a victory . . . . Your swords and bows had nothing to do with it” (Joshua 24:11-12. TEV). Can the way of love really overcome enemies? Explore in the author’s easy-to-read style how the weapons of God’s kind of warfare can lead to peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible records a number of covenants that God made with his people. However, rather than merely abstract ideas for theologians and scholars to study, the covenants in Scripture hold the key to understanding the Bible’s overarching story and message. In God’s Kingdom through God’s Covenants, two world-class scholars offer readers an engaging snapshot of how God has chosen to lovingly relate to his people in history, tracing the significance of the concept of “covenant” through both the Old and New Testaments. Explaining the differences between covenant theology and dispensationalism while offering a thoughtful alternative to both, this book ultimately highlights the covenantal framework through which God has promised to remain faithful to his people.

Book The biblical concept of the Davidic Covenant in 2 Samuel and Ezekiel and its implications for African leadership

Download or read book The biblical concept of the Davidic Covenant in 2 Samuel and Ezekiel and its implications for African leadership written by Victor Lonu Budha and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have offered insight into the Davidic Covenant and the future hope for Israel. However, their works up to this point have overlooked a detailed influence of 2 Samuel 7 on Ezekiel 34 and 37. Therefore, reading the text of Ezekiel in relation to the original form of the Davidic Covenant may reveal further indications of the literary, theological and conceptual influence of 2 Samuel 7 and the help it provides in understanding the function of the promised ruler in Ezekiel 34 and 37. An intertextual approach proves to be relevant to establishing this influence. The intertextual approach used for the exegesis in this book establishes how biblical books are connected and proves the influence of the text of 2 Samuel on that of Ezekiel 34 and 37. The study of 2 Samuel 7 in relation to the Davidic Covenant underscores God’s faithfulness and concern for his people. Godly leadership is the kind of leadership that God desires for his people. Looking closely at the Davidic Covenant and God’s promises in Ezekiel’s text, we can see that they encompass important implications for African leadership.
