Employing social-scientific models and carefully using comparative data, Love examines the various aspects of this marginality, identifying the attempts of Matthew's Gospel to promote Jesus's vision of a new surrogate family of God that challenges the traditional structures of the household.
Download or read book A Study of Pauline Interpretation of Jesus Ethical Sayings in Q and Its Significance in Today s Indian Context written by J. Stanly Jones and published by Paul and Jesus. This book was released on 2007 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme 'Jesus and Paul' is one of the classical topics of New Testament studies. Though Paul has shaped our impression of Jesus Christ, he says little about Jesus' sayings. However, in places where Paul makes use of Jesus' sayings, Paul interprets them in such a way that it fits into the new Sitz im Leben of the Christian community he writes to. This book aims to understand Paul as an interpreter of Jesus, so that it would help us to interpret the Bible in today's context.
Download or read book Jesus and the Politics of Mammon written by Hollis Phelps and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jesus and the Politics of Mammon, Phelps uses contemporary critical theory, continental philosophy, and theology to develop a radical reading of Jesus. Phelps argues that theological traditions have on the whole blunted Jesus’ teachings, particularly in regard to money and related concerns of political economy. Focusing on the distinction between God and Mammon, Phelps suggests instead that Jesus’ teachings result in a politics that is anti-money, anti-work, and anti-family. Although Jesus does not provide a specific program for this politics, his teachings incite readers to think otherwise with respect to these institutions.
Download or read book Jesus The Person and the Mission written by John R. Morris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-14 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a search for the Jesus of history, the Jesus experienced by his disciples during his public life. Its objective is to discover the authentic words and deeds attributable to Jesus with historical certitude. It accounts for his Jewish religious background and the historical context in which he carried out his mission. Central to this work is Jesus’ relationship to his Abba and his personal understanding of his mission. Special attention is devoted to the major events and teaching of Jesus: his baptism, his miracles, his preaching and parables, and his Last Supper. The Jesus of history, the person and his words and deeds, are foundational for the faith of the early church and the written Scriptures that followed his death and resurrection. They are also foundational for contemporary faith. This book is based on and benefits greatly from the most recent biblical and theological scholarship. It attempts to make manageable a large amount of scholarly literature that can be intimidating to the casual reader. Its aim is also to serve both faith and theological enquiry by providing an effective source for the reader’s personal reflection, intellectual curiosity, and a basis for faith.
Download or read book Beware the Evil Eye Volume 3 written by John H. Elliott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evil Eye is mentioned repeatedly throughout the Old Testament, Israel's parabiblical writings, and New Testament, with a variety of terms and expressions. The Old Testament (Greek Septuagint) contains no less than fourteen text segments involving some twenty explicit references to the Evil Eye (Deut 15:9; 28:54, 56; Prov 23:6; 28:22; Tob 4:7, 16; Sir 14:3, 6, 8, 9, 10; 18:18; 31:13; 37:11; Wis 4:12; 4 Macc 1:26; 2:15; Ep Jer 69/70). At least three further texts are also likely implied references to an Evil Eye (1 Sam 2:29, 32; 18:9), with some other texts as more distant possibilities. The Evil Eye is mentioned also in the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the writings of Philo and Josephus--all of which are discussed in the following pages. Evil Eye belief and practice continued in the early Jesus movement. Jesus mentions the Evil Eye on more than one occasion (Matt 6:22-23; Luke 11:33-36; Mark 7:22). Paul makes explicit and implicit mention of the Evil Eye in his letter to the Galatians (3:1; 4:12-20). Possible implicit references to the Evil Eye are also examined. Both the common and the distinctive features of biblical Evil Eye belief are identified, along with its operation on multiple levels (biological/physiological, psychological, economic, social, and moral) and its serving a variety of purposes. The numerous references to the Evil Eye in Israel's rabbinic writings and those of postbiblical Christianity (second-sixth centuries CE), together with the material evidence from this period, are examined in volume 4.

This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 1672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Crawford’s introduction to and concise commentary on Esther. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.
