Book excerpt: Just after half past nine on the morning of Sunday 1 November 1755, the end of the world came to the city of Lisbon. On a day that had begun with blue skies and gentle warmth, Portugal's proud capital was struck by a massive earthquake. After a brief, two-minute tremor came six minutes of horror as Lisbon swayed 'like corn in the wind before the avalanches of descending masonry hid the ruins under a cloud of dust'. A third tremor shook most of the buildings still standing to the ground, causing catastrophic loss of life. Lisbon had been struck by a seismic disturbance estimated at 8.7 on the Richter scale - more powerful than the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. An hour later, riverine Lisbon and the Algarve coast were engulfed by a series of tsunamis. In areas of the city unaffected by the waves, fires raged for six days, completing the destruction of Europe's fourth-largest city. By the time it was all over, 60,000 souls had perished and 85% of Lisbon's buildings, plus an unimaginable wealth of cultural treasures, had been destroyed by quake, fire or water. The earthquake had a searing impact on the European psyche. Theologians and philosophers were baffled by this awesome manifestation of the anger of God. How could the presence of such suffering in the world be reconciled with the existence of a beneficent deity? For Portugal itself, despite an ambitious programme of reconstruction (which gave birth to the modern science of seismology), the quake ushered in a period of decline, in which her seaborne supremacy was eclipsed by the inexorable rise of the British empire.Drawing on primary sources, Edward Paice paints a vivid picture of a city and society changed for ever by a day of terror. He describes in thrilling detail the quake itself and its immediate aftermath, but he is interested just as much in its political, economic and cultural consequences. Wrath of God is a gripping account from a master writer of a natural disaster that had a transformative impact on European society.

Book Where Is God

  • Author : Jon Sobrino
  • Publisher : Orbis Books

Download or read book Where Is God written by Jon Sobrino and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2015-03-04 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jon Sobrino's latest book takes its starting point from tragedy and violence: a devastating earthquake in El Salvador, the terrorist attacks of September 11, and the subsequent bombing of Afghanistan. The topic of suffering and death has traditionally raised questions about the nature and existence of God. But for Sobrino the primary question is addressed to ourselves: Who are we human beings? What does it mean to be human in a world of inequality, injustice, and barbarism? In examining the cruelty of history from the standpoint of the victims, Sobrino finds a challenge not just to find meaning, but to answer a call to personal conversion, structural change, compassion, and solidarity. Ultimately, Christian faith finds hope in the cross--a cross borne not only by Christ, but by Romero, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the poor: "Because of that hope, no matter how hard it is to live through catastrophes, terrorism and barbarity, we cannot rule out the possibility of resurrection."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Coming of Jesus Christ will be announced by the most unimaginably powerful earthquake never known by man, splitting the Mount of Olives in two, and changing the earth worldwide. There are at least seventeen earthquakes revealed in the Bible, nine of them in the New Testament. Every earthquake reveals God's presence and His power. Some reveal God's warning and wrath against sin. God placed every earthquake fault on the earth at the creation, and He knows where they are, when He will release them, for whatever purpose He chooses. The Bible describes five distinct conditions of the earth. First it was formless, lifeless, and enshrouded in darkness. After the six days of creation, the earth was transformed into the second condition: pristine, free of sin, beautiful, and peaceful for man. The sinful third condition occurred when satan entered the garden, introduced sin, and began to assault man. God cleansed the earth once again with the Great Flood, but man quickly reintroduced sin into the world, creating the fourth condition we are living in today. It is a world that is in serious moral decline due to greed, pride, immorality, disobedience, love for each other gone cold, and the increasing rejection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God will finally change this fourth condition with devastating events during the seven years of tribulation, releasing four worldwide earthquakes and finally, an unimaginable final earthquake to purge the earth of sin and create the peaceful, sin-free, and pristine fifth condition for 1,000 years. The earthly kingdom and the heavenly kingdom will become one, and Jesus will reign until the final judgement of sinners. God will bring the New Jerusalem down from heaven where we will be in the presence of God and Jesus for all eternity.

Sure, Marnie Dixon is good company, but Dawn was supposed to be here with Kevin, the love of her life (or so she thought). Marnie Dixon needs some time away from the absolute realness of life as much as her jilted daughter does, and she's not about to let her only child suffer alone--even if Marnie herself had been doing precisely that for the past month. Given the circumstances, maybe it was inevitable that Marnie would do something as rash as buy a run-down ice-cream shop in the town's tightly regulated historic district. After all, everything's better with ice cream. Her exasperated daughter knows that she's the one who will have to clean up this mess. Even when her mother's impulsive real estate purchase brings Kevin back into her life, Dawn doesn't get her hopes up. Everyone knows that broken romances stay broken . . . don't they? Welcome to a summer of sweet surprises on Cape Cod--a place where dreams just might come true.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, God has used earthquakes to prove His presence, deliver His people, execute His wrath, or demonstrate His power. In the future, the Bible says, earthquakes will also punctuate significant happenings set for the last days. The writings of more than two dozen individuals in church history who have prophesied specific earthquakes for the end times are compiled in this book by Stanley Hoerman and Bob Armstrong. Included are the prophecies of St. Hildegard from the twelfth century, Mother Shipton from the sixteenth century, William Branham from the twentieth century, and current Christians such as Jim Bakker. This trumpet call for believers to "get ready" for the end times offers a historical thread of prophetic expressions, each pointing us toward dramatic seismic events to come at the end of the age.

  • Author : Martina Kölbl-Ebert
  • Publisher : Geological Society of London
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9781862392694
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Geology and Religion written by Martina Kölbl-Ebert and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2009 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses this long-standing relationship from a historical point of view, which in the past has been sometimes indifferent, sometimes fruitful and sometimes full of conflict. The relationship continues well into the present. While Christian fundamentalists attack evolution and related palaeontological findings as well as the geological evidence of the age of the Earth, mainstream theologians strive for a fruitful dialogue between science and religion. Much of what is written and discussed today can only be understood, when the historical perspective is added. This book considers the following topics: the development of geology from mythological approaches towards the European Enlightenment, Biblical or Geological Flood and the age of the Earth, geology within 'religious' organizations, biographical case studies of geological clerics and religious geologists, religion and evolution, historical aspects of creationism and its motives.

Book excerpt: A native of Haiti, Dimitry Elias Léger makes his remarkable debut with this story of romance, politics, and religion that traces the fates of three lovers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the challenges they face readjusting to life after an earthquake devastates their city. Reflecting the chaos of disaster and its aftermath, God Loves Haiti switches between time periods and locations, yet always moves closer to solving the driving mystery at its center: Will the artist Natasha Robert reunite with her one true love, the injured Alain Destiné, and live happily ever after? Warm and constantly surprising, told in the incandescent style of José Saramago and Roberto Bolaño, and reminiscent of Gabriel García Márquez’s hauntingly beautiful Love in The Time of Cholera, God Loves Haiti is an homage to a lost time and city, and the people who embody it.

Book excerpt: In the mysterious lands of Manoa, Xacul claims he is a god, but is he really the one causing the rumbling and fire spouting from the ground? ExcerptIt was stiflingly hot in the submarine's tiny cabin. The steady pound of the screws was a throbbing ache. Coh Langham, his scarred hawk face set in lines of restless boredom, stared out the port at the featureless muck that rolled endlessly away under the searchlight, "Krim," he said abruptly, "you're crazy."Simon Krim, hunched like a shaggy black bull over the tiny control panel, spoke without taking his eyes from the sea-floor. "What's the matter, Langham? Has the thrill petered out?""Thrill!" Langham's strong brown body, stripped to dungarees, hitched angrily lower in the seat. Yes, he had expected a thrill. He had hated seeing Krim again; it took him back to a time he wanted to forget. But Krim had asked him, and he, at a loose end and restless as always, had accepted. Hunting a sunken continent with a submarine was something he hadn't done before. It looked exciting. The excitement had resolved itself into three weeks of hellish monotony, heat, and inactivity, and utter boredom.Simon Krim grunted. "That's all you think about, isn't it? Thrills. Your father was a hard-working archeologist, my best friend. And you spend your life crashing planes and climbing mountains, having adventures."There was an edge to his voice; his hairy body gleamed with sweat, and there were tight lines around his mouth.Coh Langham's blue eyes went hard under the scarlet cloth that held back his damp fair hair. "My life's my own, Krim. My father certainly never got much out of his!"

Book Easter Earthquake

  • ISBN : 0835817180
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Easter Earthquake written by James A. Harnish and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been in an earthquake? Earthquakes shake our most basic assumptions: that the ground will remain steady beneath our feet, that the world's current existence is the way it will always be. But when tectonic plates shift under the earth's surface and the ground shakes beneath our feet, it rattles the bedrock assumptions on which we build our lives. The Gospel of Matthew reports that on the first Easter morning, an earthquake rocked the earth, ripped open the tomb, and scared the Roman guards at the tomb, who "shook with fear and became like dead men" (Matthew 28:4). This is the second earthquake reported by Matthew. The first one took place on Good Friday, when the noonday sky turned black and Jesus died. In Easter Earthquake, James Harnish invites us to place the resurrection at the center of our Lenten journey. This 6-week study explores how Christ's resurrection shakes some of our most basic assumptions about ourselves and God. "The earth-shaking promise of Easter is that God has not forsaken any of us," Harnish writes. "The risen Christ will meet us along the confused, chaotic, fearful paths of our lives and speak the same words the women hear at the tomb: 'Do not be afraid .'" This book reverses the usual focus of Lenten studies by starting at the empty tomb and seeing the entire journey in light of the resurrection. Join James Harnish in this energizing exploration that will inspire you to live as a more faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. FEATURES A guide for daily mediation and prayer An outline for small-group meetings Begins with Ash Wednesday and continues through Easter Each week contains 5 readings, a prayer focus, and suggestions for small-group interaction Includes a hymn each week

Book Prodigals and Those Who Love Them

Download or read book Prodigals and Those Who Love Them written by Ruth Bell Graham and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth Bell Graham knew about prodigals--two of her five children were spiritual wanderers. This is not a "how to" book that dispenses easy advice on ways to win back a prodigal. Instead, it is a collection of readings one woman turned to for comfort when her children wandered from God. It shows how Graham's faith persevered and grew regardless of the outcome of her prodigals' stories. Part One introduces readers to five prodigals who "returned to the father." Part Two offers comfort and encouragement through Scripture, poems, hymns, prayers, and more. Readers will be touched by the honest feelings of pain, frustration, and uncertainty Graham expresses so eloquently. And they will share in the lessons she learned about God's sovereignty and ultimate peace. Now beautifully repackaged, Prodigals and Those Who Love Them brings peace and hope to all parents of "wayward" children.
