Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of competing in sports has been around a long time. Archaeology provides valuable information on games and athletics in the ancient world. In I Corinthians 9:24-27, there is information of running a race to win and a man fighting. It concludes that the goal is to win a prize that will last forever. Man seems to enjoy competing. Perhaps boredom has a way of creating something to do. Over time, new sports and games are developed. In this day and time, commercialization will become involved as individuals strive to make money. As sports grow in popularity, rules are written and guidelines set. These regulating documents tend to expand as the sport grows in popularity. Terminology for the sport will be refined and expanded to explain the game and its rules. Sports and Spirituality is a series of devotional books. Each book relates spiritual principles and scriptures to terminology for a particular sport. Terms related to the sport are defined and then used as the central focus to develop devotional thoughts. Each book presents specific devotional thoughts related to the term being discussed. Scriptures are suggested to supplement the devotional study. Studies can be in a group format or individual. The book is written to spark interest for the sports enthusiast who wishes to increase his or her spiritual commitment. Also, it can serve as a devotional guide for those interested in sports and physical activity. It can make an excellent gift book. Everything we do in life should center on serving God, even when playing a sport. We play a sport or game for fun, but we must play the game of life for God. If we ever stop serving God, all will be lost. To find out more about this amazing book and its mission, Click here.

Book Of Gods and Games

Download or read book Of Gods and Games written by William J. Baker and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That Americans take to sports with a spiritual fervor is no secret. Athletics has even been called a civil religion for how it permeates our daily lives as we chase our own dreams of glory or watch others compete. Few would deny our national devotion to sports; however, many would gloss over it as all of a piece. To do that, as William J. Baker shows us, is to miss the fascinating variety of experiences at the intersection of sports and religion—and the ramifications of such on a national citizenry defined, as Baker writes, “by the team they cheer on Saturday and the church they attend on Sunday.” With nods to modern and ancient history, Baker looks at the ever-changing relationship between faith and sports through vignettes about devout athletes, coaches, and journalists. Of Gods and Games offers an accessible entrée into some of the larger issues embedded in American culture’s sports–religion connection. Baker first considers two Christian athletes who have engaged sports and religion on fundamentally different terms: Shelly Pennefather, one of the dominant women’s basketball players of the late 1980s, who left the sport for life as a cloistered nun; and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, who has used his college and pro football careers as a platform for evangelizing. In discussing basketball coach Dean Smith (University of North Carolina) and football coaches Steve Spurrier (University of South Carolina) and Bill McCartney (University of Colorado) Baker looks at how each strove to honor faith amid sometimes complicated personal lives and ever-crushing professional demands. Finally, Baker looks at how faith inspired such sportswriters as Grantland Rice, who sprinkled his stories with religious allusions, and Watson Spoelstra, who struck a deal with God at his daughter’s deathbed (she recovered) and subsequently devoted his off-hours and retirement years to charity work.

Download or read book My Faith and Basketball written by Jeffrey Lisath and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-22 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true inspirational story about a boy having faith in God when playing basketball. Through the words of Jesus in scripture we can "hear" God's heart and God's voice, comparing us to sheep and Him as the Shepherd. Jesus says in John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." Through Jesus, and the power of His Holy Spirit, God wants to speak to us on a one-on-one basis, every single day of our lives. Even when we can't-hear His voice, God is constantly speaking to us and giving us direction. God used the game of basketball to grab my attention and draw me closer to Him. This experience taught me how to pray according to God's will and learn what the word faith truly means.

Book excerpt: Between 1972 and 1974, the Mighty Macs of Immaculata College—a small Catholic women's school outside Philadelphia—made history by winning the first three women's national college basketball championships ever played. A true Cinderella team, this unlikely fifteenth-seeded squad triumphed against enormous odds and four powerhouse state teams to secure the championship title and capture the imaginations of fans and sportswriters across the country. But while they were making a significant contribution to legitimizing women's sports in America, the Mighty Macs were also challenging the traditional roles and obligations that circumscribed their Catholic schoolgirl lives. In this vivid account of Immaculata basketball, Julie Byrne goes beyond the fame to explore these young women's unusual lives, their rare opportunities and pleasures, their religious culture, and the broader ideas of womanhood they inspired and helped redefine.

Download or read book Living Inbounds written by Chloe Elam and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever tried to envision life without sports? Here lately i realized that I wouldn't want to know what life would be like without basketball. For most of my life I have spent endless hours in a gym either playing or coaching the game. I also realized that a lot of what I have been able to do through the game of basketball had absolutely nothing to do with me and everything to do with God. For that reason, you are able to read "Living Inbounds". This devotional will give you strength in moments when you feel like the basketball mechanics has worn you down. In your hands is an detail outline of basketball season with Jesus Christ as the focal point of all things good and as the reason you are able to enjoy the great game of basketball as a player, coach, or fan. This devotional was written to introduce you to Christ, draw closer to Christ and allow you to give Christ all the glory for the talent that He allows you to showcase while playing ball. As you go through different stages of basketball season I pray that you can carry this book along with you to use when your team is winning and also when you all fall short. Night in and night out you can always pick up this book and feel empowered and motivated as a player and most importantly loved as a person by a perfect God. In the game of basketball everything that you do on the court must be done inside of the out of bounds line in order to follow the rules of the game and have a fair chance to win. In life in order to one day get to live in heaven with the Creator of all things we must learn how to follow His rules while we wrestle with the ways of this world, this is what I call "Living Inbounds" playing by God's rules. Be encouraged as you display the courage that it takes to let the world know that you belong to the Ruler of all things!
