Book God in Nature and Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book God in Nature and Life Classic Reprint written by Walter Rollin Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God in Nature and Life HE sermons and other writings collected in this volume are designed to preserve in affectionate hearts the memory of a great, fresh, powerful mind, that was in love with God and truth. The volume is intended also as one more expression of Dr. Brooks's favorite thoughts. The sermons were all preached between 1858 and 1873, when he was the pastor of the Baptist Church in Hamilton, n.y. The two lectures belong to a slightly earlier period. The Book of Prayers gradually grew up from Dr. Brooks's own experience, and was put into its present form for the use of a friend. It is here given as it left his hand, the few selections which he added to his own work having been retained. The printed sermons represent the manuscripts as they are; but there is reason to doubt whether Dr. Brooks ever wrote a sermon in full as he preached it. The manu scripts are often disappointing to hearers who re member how they have been thrilled by some lofty passage, thrown in as he was speaking. The best. Placing hut little value upon the points which divide sects, and regarding them more as apparent than as real antagonists, l have deemed it more important to write upon princi ples which lie at the foundation of Morals and Religion, which unite, rather than divide mankind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication in 1896 of Andrew Dickson White's classic History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom, no comprehensive history of the subject has appeared in the English language. Although many twentieth-century historians have written on the relationship between Christianity and science, and in the process have called into question many of White's conclusions, the image of warfare lingers in the public mind. To provide an up-to-date alternative, based on the best available scholarship and written in nontechnical language, the editors of this volume have assembled an international group of distinguished historians. In eighteen essays prepared especially for this book, these authors cover the period from the early Christian church to the twentieth century, offering fresh appraisals of such encounters as the trial of Galileo, the formulation of the Newtonian worldview, the coming of Darwinism, and the ongoing controversies over "scientific creationism." They explore not only the impact of religion on science, but also the influence of science and religion. This landmark volume promises not only to silence the persistent rumors of war between Christianity and science, but also serve as the point of departure for new explorations of their relationship, Scholars and general readers alike will find it provocative and readable.

Book On the Nature and the Existence of God Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Nature and the Existence of God Classic Reprint written by Annie Besant and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Nature and the Existence of God It is impossible for those who study the deeper religious problems of our time to stave off much longer the question which lies at the root of them all, "What do you believe in regard to God?." We may controvert Christian doctrines, one after another; point by point we may he driven from the various beliefs of our churches; reason may force us to see contradictions where we had imagined harmony, and may open our eyes to flaws where we had dreamed of perfection; we resign all idea of a revelation; we seek for God in Nature only; we renounce for ever the hope (which glorified our former creed into such alluring beauty) that- at some future time we should verily "see" God, that "our eyes should behold the King in his beauty" in that fairy "land which is very far off." But every step we take onwards towards a more reasonable faith and a surer light of Truth leads us nearer and nearer to the problem of problems, "What is That which men call God?" Not till theologians have thoroughly grappled with this question have they any just claim to be called religious guides; from each of those whom we honour as our leading thinkers we have a right to a distinct answer to this question, and the very object of the present paper is to provoke discussion on this point. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature of God: A Series of Lectures The following lectures were delivered before the students of Wittenberg Theological Seminary dur ing the winter of 1908 and 1909. They are an attempt to present the Christian idea of God as opposed to that of philosophy. Between the two conceptions there is a fundamental difference. Philosophy conceives of God either from the stand point of absolute transcendence or that of helpless immanence; as utterly removed from the world, or as lost in it. To the hunger of the soul for a God with whom it may hold fellowship, and from whom it may derive help, philosophy offers a stone in stead of bread. Man needs a God who in every sense of the term is near; a Being capable of being touched with a feeling of our infirmities for the reason that He has Himself felt them. 'it is for a quasi-human God that the soul hungers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Natural Signs and Knowledge of God

Download or read book Natural Signs and Knowledge of God written by C. Stephen Evans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there such a thing as natural knowledge of God? C. Stephen Evans presents the case for understanding theistic arguments as expressions of natural signs in order to gain a new perspective both on their strengths and weaknesses. Three classical, much-discussed theistic arguments - cosmological, teleological, and moral - are examined for the natural signs they embody. At the heart of this book lie several relatively simple ideas. One is that if there is a God of the kind accepted by Christians, Jews, and Muslims, then it is likely that a 'natural' knowledge of God is possible. Another is that this knowledge will have two characteristics: it will be both widely available to humans and yet easy to resist. If these principles are right, a new perspective on many of the classical arguments for God's existence becomes possible. We understand why these arguments have for many people a continued appeal but also why they do not constitute conclusive 'proofs' that settle the debate once and for all. Touching on the interplay between these ideas and contemporary scientific theories about the origins of religious belief, particularly the role of natural selection in predisposing humans to form beliefs in God or gods, Evans concludes that these scientific accounts of religious belief are fully consistent, even supportive, of the truth of religious convictions.
