Download or read book God His Knowability Essence and Attributes A Dogmatic Treatise written by Rev. Joseph Pohle Ph. D. D. and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here below man can know God only by analogy; hence we are constrained to apply to Him the three scientific questions: An sit, Quid sit, and Qualis sit, that is to say: Does He exist? What is His Essence? and What are His qualities or attributes? Consequently in theology, as in philosophy, the existence, essence, and attributes of God must form the three chief heads of investigation. The theological treatment differs from the philosophical in that it considers the subject in the light of supernatural Revelation, which builds upon and at the same time confirms, supplements, and deepens the conclusions of unaided human reason. Since the theological question regarding the existence of God resolves itself into the query: Can we know God?—the treatise De Deo Uno naturally falls into three parts: (1) The knowability of God; (2) His essence; and (3) The divine properties or attributes. Download or read book Divine and Human Providence written by Ignacio Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an original perspective on divine providence by examining philosophical, psychological, and theological perspectives on human providence as exhibited in virtuous human behaviours. Divine providence is one of the most pressing issues in analytic theology and philosophy of religion today, especially in view of scientific evidence for a natural world full of indeterminacies and contingencies. Therefore, we need new ways to understand and explain the relations of divine providence and creaturely action. The volume is structured dynamically, going from chapters on human providence to those on divine providence, and back. Drawing on insights from virtue ethics, psychology and cognitive science, the philosophy of providence in the face of contingent events, and the theology of grace, each chapter contributes to an original overall perspective: that human providential action is a resource suited specifically to personal action and hence related to the purported providential action of a personal God. By putting forward a fresh take on divine providence, this book enters new territory on an age-old issue. It will therefore be of great interest to scholars of theology and philosophy.

Download or read book God and Timelessness written by Nelson C. Pike and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-01-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theologians are agreed that God is eternal. However, disagreement arises within the Christian tradition over the precise interpretation to be given to the word 'eternal'. Professor Nelson Pike examines one way of understanding the doctrine of divine eternity that has had considerable prominence in the writings of both Catholic and Protestant theologians. On this interpretation, to say that God is eternal is to say that God exists 'outside of time'; in other words, that God is 'timeless'. Professor Pike undertakes to expose both the strengths and shortcomings of this analysis of God's eternity. In addition to his discussion of divine eternity, Professor Pike treats a wide range of other theological and philosophical topics. These include the medieval doctrine of essential prediction, the syntactical status of the term 'God', the problem of divine foreknowledge, the notion of God's omnipotence, the doctrine of divine immutability, and the general methodological issues connected with traditional ways of determining the adequacy of statements ascribing specific attributes to God.
Download or read book Preserving Islamic Tradition written by Nathan Spannaus and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the eighteenth century was a transformational period for the Muslim communities of the Russian Empire and their relationship with the tsarist state. Though they had been under Russian rule since the sixteenth century, it was at this time that they were incorporated into the imperial bureaucracy, most significantly through the founding of an official hierarchy for the Islamic religious scholars in 1788. The introduction of a state-backed structure for Muslim religious institutions altered Islamic religious authority and, in turn, religious discourse. One of the major figures to emerge from this new context was Abu Nasr Qursawi (1776-1812). A controversial figure who was condemned for heresy in Bukhara in 1808, Qursawi put forward a sweeping reform of the Islamic scholarly tradition. Focusing on taqlid, the principle of conformity to established doctrine, Qursawi argued that its overuse had weakened scholarship in the areas of Islamic law (fiqh) and theology (kalam) and undermined scholars' ability to serve as religious guides. In Preserving Islamic Tradition, Nathan Spannaus presents the first detailed analysis of Qursawi's reformist project, both in its contours and broad historical setting. Spannaus shows how state control of Muslim institutions impacted religious discourse, but also how it altered the entire religious environment into the twentieth century. Addressing issues of modernity, secularity, tradition, and intellectual history, Preserving Islamic Tradition demonstrates how the interaction with a European imperial state transformed the Islamic tradition, both directly and indirectly, and elicited new forms of religious thought and discourse.

Significant portions of Scripture are devoted to Christ's return, and countless theological works have been written on death, heaven and hell, the apocalypse, and other eschatological topics. This volume adds an important voice to the volumes of literature already written on the subject. Pohle writes lengthy chapters on death, heaven, hell, purgatory, along with the resurrection and the last judgment.
