Book excerpt: These are some of the adventures of a Kansas farm boy, who tried to live life. He met and married a California girl who was the love of his life and she was a woman, a lady and a woman of God, who lived life with him. Through the many adventures, some dangerous and/or life threatening, he felt that God was there and looking out for him, for reasons known only to God. He claims to be nothing special, quite the contrary. His travels took him to far off and exotic places, Panama, Latin America, Mexico, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines, Viet Nam, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, Greece, Ethiopia, Spain, France and California. Horses, motorcycles, war, law enforcement, hunting, people, kids and the love of a good woman are all a part of his story. When his wife was diagnosed with liver cancer and God chose to take her home, in his searching for understanding and peace of mind, he started writing as a form of coping, and turned to God for understanding. God provided the understanding in the form of a 4-year-old child. This 4-year-old girl is the Symbol of God's Love and being a child is the Symbol of Hope for all of us. Through the many encounters, God and Kate looked out for and took care of him. Hence, the title God, Kate, and I.

Book excerpt: To most making it through tough times is never financially easy. Those who got through the periods of “Great Depression” did so with grit, determination, a can-do spirit and a lot of courage. Best of all, they came out stronger too! Those who survive those challenges and come out with a solid self-concept, a loving family and grounded faith ridded themselves of spiritual and mental baggage that would have otherwise destroyed them. They had a lean mind to go with a toned body. As we gaze at the hard days in front of us, it is time to look back on some time-tested examples of those who thrived in tough times as well as those whose mental baggage caused them to crash and burn. The lessons in this book involve not as much what each of us can add to insure survival, but what we can shed from our minds to keep out spirits high and our attitudes on an even keel. In trying times or even when things are great a fit, lean, positive mind is the key to being happy.

Book Unanticipated Gains

Download or read book Unanticipated Gains written by Mario Luis Small and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social capital theorists have shown that some people do better than others in part because they enjoy larger, more supportive, or otherwise more useful networks. But why do some people have better networks than others? Unanticipated Gains argues that the practice and structure of the churches, colleges, firms, gyms, childcare centers, and schools in which people happen to participate routinely matter more than their deliberate "networking." Exploring the experiences of New York City mothers whose children were enrolled in childcare centers, this book examines why a great deal of these mothers, after enrolling their children, dramatically expanded both the size and usefulness of their personal networks. Whether, how, and how much the mother's networks were altered--and how useful these networks were--depended on the apparently trivial, but remarkably consequential, practices and regulations of the centers. The structure of parent-teacher organizations, the frequency of fieldtrips, and the rules regarding drop-off and pick-up times all affected the mothers' networks. Relying on scores of in-depth interviews with mothers, quantitative data on both mothers and centers, and detailed case studies of other routine organizations, Small shows that how much people gain from their connections depends substantially on institutional conditions they often do not control, and through everyday processes they may not even be aware of. Emphasizing not the connections that people make, but the context in which they are made, Unanticipated Gains presents a major new perspective on social capital and on the mechanisms producing social inequality.

Just as Jeremiah asked the question: “Is There No Balm In Gilead?” Many years ago, Jesus is “America’s Balm” for the many ills, evils, troubles, problems, and tribulations we are facing in this country. My purpose in writing these seven messages is to encourage the Believers to use the "Armor" that the Lord has provided for His Church in these trying and uncertain days. "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." (Ephesians 6:13)
