This misperception of Christianity not only perniciously implies that men deserve an elevated place over women but also compromises the glory of God by making God appear to be part of creation, subject to it and its categories, rather than in transcendence of it. Through a deep reading of the incarnation narratives of the New Testament and other relevant scriptural texts, Amy Peeler shows how the Bible depicts a God beyond gender and a savior who, while embodied as a man, is the unification in one person of the image of God that resides in both male and female. Peeler begins with a study of Mary and her response to the annunciation, through which it becomes clear that God empowers women and honors their agency. Then Peeler describes from a theological standpoint how the virgin birth of Jesus—the second Adam—reverses the gendered division enacted in the garden of Eden. While acknowledging the significance of the Bible’s frequent use of “Father” language to represent God as a caring parent, Peeler goes beneath the surface of this metaphor to show how God is never sexualized by biblical writers or described as being physically involved in procreation—making the concept of a masculine God dubious, at best. It is this "theology" that Kevin Giles deconstructs and shows to be without a biblical foundation. Giles shows that he is fully conversant with the complementarian position and yet is unpersuaded by it. He sees it as an appeal to the Bible to preserve male privilege, similar to the appeals to the Bible to validate slavery and Apartheid; appeals to the Bible made by some of the best Reformed and evangelical biblical scholars, and now seen to be special pleading. Carefully studying the limited number of texts on which complementarians predicate their theology of the sexes, Giles finds not one of them actually teaches what complementarians claim. Furthermore, complementarians too often ignore the texts that are very difficult for them. In this book the ordination of women gets only passing mention. The constant focus is on whether or not the Bible subordinates women to men as an abiding theological principle.

Whether deliberate or not, over time, this quality of the nature of God was lost, and these three religions developed into patriarchal systems that suppressed the importance of feminine input into not only religious systems, but also society as a whole. Many writers and theologians down through history have recognized this fact, but it is denied or overlooked by mainstream religions today. Early Church Fathers (including Clement, Philo, and Jerome), prominent medieval church leaders (Anselm of Canterbury, Bernard of Clairvoux, St. Birgitta of Sweden and many others) and more modern day leaders (Martin Luther, Oswald Chambers, Albert Einstein and Carl Jung) have all supported the truth of the feminine nature of God. Though these people are held in high regard by many, this aspect of their reasoning is completely ignored. Why is this subject not taken seriously? A.W. Tozer said it is impossible to have sound moral practices and right attitudes without a clear view of who God is. Billy Graham said the next step in the growth of the Church is to better understand the nature and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. There are many small voices who are promoting this truth of God, but they are not being heard by the average person. It is time to shout this truth to the world and watch how it can transform the position of women and bring balance and health to hurting families and societies.
