Book excerpt: Excerpt from God and the Struggle for Existence IF the gods, said Socrates, do not prefer the good man to the evil, then it is better to die than to live. Unless we are Convinced that in the last resort the power behind the Universe is on the side of righteousness, the mainspring of endeavour is broken, the lamp of h0pe is almost quenched. But during the last hundred years or so there have been not a few to whom it has appeared that the discoveries of modern science have made the existence of God an unnecessary hypothesis. There are many more to whom the experience of the war has made it an incredible one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God and the Struggle for Existence "God is dead," says Nietzche's Zarathustra; and there are many who, in face of the evil of the world, are afraid he may be right, yet still "faintly trust the larger hope." This book is written to suggest to such that there are solid grounds in reason for the contrary conviction - God is alive, and from Him we may get power ourselves to really live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology, while science has sat on the sidelines. Despite the fact that science has revolutionized every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality. This book contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans. Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, physicist Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence. He considers the latest Intelligent Design arguments as evidence of God's influence in biology. He looks at human behavior for evidence of immaterial souls and the possible effects of prayer. He discusses the findings of physics and astronomy in weighing the suggestions that the universe is the work of a creator and that humans are God's special creation. After evaluating all the scientific evidence, Stenger concludes that beyond a reasonable doubt the universe and life appear exactly as we might expect if there were no God. This paperback edition of the New York Times bestselling hardcover edition contains a new foreword by Christopher Hitchens and a postscript by the author in which he responds to reviewers' criticisms of the original edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of God The idea of God is so variously defined that we make bold to say that every single individual has a conception of his own. There are no two alike, and the idea of God among different persons is indic ative of their character, for every man creates his God in his own image. There was a brave officer in the Austrian army nu der Prince Eugene. When once in his presence the problem of God's existence was discussed, he clapped his hand on his sword and said: Gentlemen, I stand up for God with my sword, I challenge whoever denies him and, so help me God, I'll conquer him. I hope that God will stand up for me, too, on the day of judg ment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book 36 Arguments for the Existence of God

Download or read book 36 Arguments for the Existence of God written by Rebecca Goldstein and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Mind-Body Problem: a witty and intoxicating novel of ideas that plunges into the great debate between faith and reason. At the center is Cass Seltzer, a professor of psychology whose book, The Varieties of Religious Illusion, has become a surprise best seller. Dubbed “the atheist with a soul,” he wins over the stunning Lucinda Mandelbaum—“the goddess of game theory.” But he is haunted by reminders of two people who ignited his passion to understand religion: his teacher Jonas Elijah Klapper, a renowned literary scholar with a suspicious obsession with messianism, and an angelic six-year-old mathematical genius, heir to the leadership of an exotic Hasidic sect. Hilarious, heartbreaking, and intellectually captivating, 36 Arguments explores the rapture and torments of religious experience in all its variety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Arguments for the Existence of God This book, a portion of which was published in the American Israelite in 1883, is intended to show the efforts that the human mind has made to solve the great problem of the Divine existence. It is safe to say - and were it for no other reason but because Atheism can never succeed in proving the impossibility of the existence of God - the attempts to argue the Divine existence will be renewed and continued in every generation, no matter how much there will be said or written against it. It has been often maintained that the triumphs of natural sciences in our century have shaken the foundation of all proofs of the Divine existence. That is not so: just the reverse has been accomplished by the scientifically proved idea of the "Unity of Nature." This idea, which means that the laws of nature arc all-embracing, that the most distant planets have some of the same kind of minerals that the earth contains, and that heat, light, electricity, magnetism and chemical affinity - this pentarchy of physical force - are so intricately related that they can be converted into one another, implies the ideas of the five main arguments for the existence of God. Book The Eternal Conflict Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Eternal Conflict Classic Reprint written by William Romaine Paterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eternal Conflict Merely an affair of chronological sequence, or of regular and consistent progression. Rather, it must be viewed under the form of an or ganism which, like every other organism, keeps returning upon itself through successive phases of health and disease. And on close examina tion it will be found that this ambiguous move ment is characteristic of the highest type of spiritual life. For even the saints, if we are to believe their confessions and their prayers, had their moments of temptation and forgetful ness, their moods of uncharitable and bitter judgments when the old stain rose again through the whiteness of their lives. But supposing God had suddenly called them, are we to believe that their struggle and mastery and sainthood would have counted for nothing simply because in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump, they were found unprepared? And what right has any one who believes in God and immortality to believe in the finality of evil even in the case of a man whom death has plucked like a rotten fruit? Under so exalted a view of human destiny it might have been expected that man would not be considered merely like a withering plant which, once it has begun to wither, must only wither away. If this great belief were more to me than only a hope and a fearful looking for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book God in a World at War Classic Reprint

Download or read book God in a World at War Classic Reprint written by Douglas Clyde Macintosh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God in a World at War The great world-war had led a good many people seriously to raise for the first time the question as to whether they ought not to revise their inherited religious belief. It all depends upon what happen to have been their inherited beliefs. Nothing has happened during the war that has not, in principle, happened over and over again in the course of human history; there are no essentially new religious problems to be faced. But many who were putting off the troublesome duty of fundamental thinking until a more convenient season are now finding themselves forced, for their own peace of mind, to begin even at this late hour to do their own religious thinking and come to their own conclusions. The religious questions most commonly raised by the war have been concerning divine providence in human affairs, the meaning of the presence of so much evil in the universe of a presumably good God, assurance as to a life after death, the religious status of the individual soldier with special reference to the hereafter, and the prospect for the future well-being of the human race.
