Book excerpt: Excerpt from God and His World, Sermons on Evolution To those who desire to know the order of development of the thoughts contained in this volume, I would say that my first public utterance on Evolution, outside of my own church, was given in June, 1871, to the graduating class of the Harvard Divinity School. To them I said, in a sermon on "The Preacher's Office": "I discharge a brothers duty to you when I declare my deliberate conviction that science will be able to maintain against all comers her own account of the advent and development of organic life on the planet. I believe that she will eventually be able to prove that life has been developed out of life from the lowest round of the ladder of being to the highest; that not only has reptile sprung from fish, bird and mammal from reptile, but that our own bodies have been developed as the head of the same grand series... You will, then, I believe, live to see the doctrine of evolution victorious all along the line; and, if this be so, your business as preachers will be to fill that idea full of God." Book The Natural Theology of Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Theology of Evolution Classic Reprint written by J. N. Shearman and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Book Evolution Illuminating the Bible Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Illuminating the Bible It is evident that the material views advanced by our leading men of science are causing a class of Christians much anxiety. One object I had in writing this volume was to draw the attention of this class to the fact that our Lord clearly advanced such views, when he defined man in his natural state as a unit of Body and Mind - graphicly classed by Him as "that which is born of the Flesh is Flesh," - put in contrast with the new sentiment conversion imparts, defined as one "born of the Spirit, Spirit." - John iii. 6. He was instructing Nicodemus on this vital principle of Christianity, who recognised Jesus as a teacher come from God, and came to be taught by Him. Nicodemus, like many in our day, who are startled by materialism, was greatly amazed when informed of the necessity of being "born again" before he could see the kingdom of heaven. But such is the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book God s Paths to Peace

Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's Paths to Peace: A Story of Evolution It is a cause for gratification indeed that a treatise on peace can be published in these times when the adherents of the war theory seem to have it all their own way. I am thankful to the publishers, to the Church Peace Union, and to the German-American Peace Society of America that they have opened the way for my message. If conceived in a time of optimistic hope, I have had no reason to make any changes in any essential part of the booklet. There is not one of the forces which I have shown to operate toward the legal organization of the world that has become ineffective through the war, not one that will not offer itself as a proper avenue by which to proceed on our way of peaceful progress when this calamity will have passed over, and even before. Most urgently they show us the way we must choose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the beginning God created heaven and earth, and the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face Of the deep; and the spirit Of God moved over the waters. God first made light, then He sepa rated the land from the waters, commanded the earth to produce the green herb, set the stars, sun and moon in the heavens, bade the waters bring forth the creeping things and birds of the air, and finally at His command, there appeared the cattle and the beasts of the field. Book The Work of the Holy Spirit

Download or read book The Work of the Holy Spirit written by S. C. Lowry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the Holy Spirit: Thirteen Sermons This book is not a formal treatise; it is simply a collection of Sermons preached on various occasions. They are arranged, however, with some degree of method, and repetition is as far as possible avoided. The importance of the subject, and the comparative paucity of sermons on what has been called "the forgotten truth" are the authors reasons for publishing. Some, it is hoped, may care to read these Sermons who would shrink from studying a more elaborate and exhaustive treatise. Frequent references are made herein to Bible texts, and thus this volume may possibly provide material for Bible readings. In many Churches a course of addresses on the Holy Spirit would form after Easter a useful preparation for Whit Sunday. Many of the ideas and phrases are taken from other writers, but it has been impossible to remember the source in every instance. The author, however, is specially indebted to Mr. Moule's "Veni Creator," Archdeacon Hare's "Mission of the Comforter," and Mr. Gore's essay in "Lux Munch." The first five Sermons were preached as a consecutive series. An Appendix has been added with notes for Bible study, which may be expanded into Addresses. May He, Whose blessed work these pages attempt to illustrate, grant His blessing to the readers, and lead them to a fuller knowledge of all spiritual truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Religion: A Parent's Talks With His, Children Concerning the Moral Side of Evolution And God said: Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures and let fowl fly above the earth n the face of the expanse of the heaven. - Here, too, th most pronounced, advanced evolutionist recognizes the truth of simple statement. The normal conditions of space are not only darkness and cold, but apparently death. Life projected into the purely negative condition of non-life is as positive a phenomenon as light projected into darkness, or heat into cold. Whence that life came, again we cannot absolutely say. And God said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth. This would appear to be an admirably simple and compact statement of the crown ing positive phenomenon of creation, when interpreted in its true evolutionary sense of a gradual development. Man, who is to have dominion over all the earth, emerges first upon the scene. He is to have dominion, not only over all the other forms of animal life, but over the earth itself, with its hidden wealth, its as yet unfolded mysterious forces, which are to be subjugated to his will and become his obedient servants. He is to discover and control the positive phenomena of light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bringing the Gospel Home

Download or read book Bringing the Gospel Home written by Randy Newman and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharing the gospel with a family member can be an exciting experience—and often a long, painful, and confrontational one. Randy Newman recognizes it can be more difficult and frustrating to witness to a family member than to nearly anyone else. In Bringing the Gospel Home, he delivers practical, holistic strategies to help average Christians engage family members and others on topics of faith. A messianic Jew who has led several family members to Christ, Newman urges Christians to look to the Bible before they evangelize. He writes, "a richer understanding of biblical truth, I have found, can provide a firmer foundation for bold witness and clear communication." After a brief introduction on the nature of family, he delves into discussions of grace, truth, love, humility, and time. He also addresses issues related to eternity and end-of-life conversations. Bringing the Gospel Home will help any Christian as he seeks to guide loved ones into God's family.

Book The Knowledge of God and Other Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Knowledge of God and Other Sermons Classic Reprint written by Lord Bishop of Wakefield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knowledge of God and Other Sermons "This is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent." St. John xvii. 3. So spake the Master we follow in His great prayer the night before He died on the Cross; and the Church has taken His words into one of her daily collects, speaking of God, "in knowledge of whom" (that is, of course, "in the knowing of whom") "standeth our eternal life"; as well as into the Collect for St. Philip and St. James's Day - "whom truly to know is everlasting life." But men say, 'We cannot know God: we do not deny the existence of God; but we affirm that, if there be a God, He is unknowable.' Now let me at once allow that there is a great truth underlying this agnosticism. There generally is a truth at the root of all error; for error is mostly partial or one-sided truth, erring in its ignoring of other truth. It is true, then, that a finite being like man cannot know, with any complete or commensurate knowledge, an infinite Being like God.
