Book Irish English as Represented in Film

Download or read book Irish English as Represented in Film written by Shane Walshe and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first of its kind to analyse the representation of Irish English in film. Using a corpus of 50 films, ranging from John Ford's The Informer (1935) to Lenny Abrahamson's Garage (2007), the author examines the extent to which Irish English grammatical, discourse and lexical features are present in the films and provides a qualitative analysis of the accents in these works. The authenticity of the language is called into question and discussed in relation to the phenomenon of the Stage Irishman.

Book Gobsmacked

Download or read book Gobsmacked written by Ben Yagoda and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spot-on guide to how and why Americans have become so bloody keen on Britishisms—for good or ill The British love to complain that words and phrases imported from America—from French fries to Awesome, man!—are destroying the English language. But what about the influence going the other way? Britishisms have been making their way into the American lexicon for more than 150 years, but the process has accelerated since the turn of the twenty-first century. From acclaimed writer and language commentator Ben Yagoda, Gobsmacked! is a witty, entertaining, and enlightening account of how and why scores of British words and phrases—such as one-off, go missing, curate, early days, kerfuffle, easy peasy, and cheeky—have been enthusiastically taken up by Yanks. After tracing Britishisms that entered the American vocabulary in the nineteenth century and during the world wars, Gobsmacked! discusses the most-used British terms in America today. It features chapters on the American embrace of British insults and curses, sports terms, and words about food and drinks. The book also explores the American adoption of British spellings, pronunciations, and grammar, and cases where Americans have misconstrued British expressions (for example, changing can’t be arsed to can’t be asked) or adopted faux-British usages, like pronouncing divisive as “divissive.” Finally, the book offers some guidance on just how many Britishisms an American can safely adopt without coming off like an arse. Rigorously researched and documented but written in a light, conversational style, this is a book that general readers and language obsessives will love. Its revealing account of a surprising and underrecognized language revolution might even leave them, well, gobsmacked.

His girlfriend Dorothy has vanished, taking with her all the equipment and money of the company she ran with her friend Ali. Now Tom and Ali are forced to eke out an awkward shared bedsit existence while they try to work out what she is up to. Meanwhile, Tom has other things on his mind, including how to untangle his father from a cryptocurrency scam, how to break into a hospital in order to interrogate an old acquaintance and what is the significance of the messages he’s been receiving from Rufus Fairbanks’s LinkedIn account. Tom and Ali’s investigations lead them in a host of unexpected and frankly dangerous directions, involving a pet python, an offshore stag do and an improbable application of the Fibonacci sequence. But at the end of it all, will they find Dorothy – and will she ever be able to explain just exactly what is going on? Praise for Jonathan Pinnock: ‘Lovely stuff.’ Ian Rankin 'A series of humorous, riotous mathematical mysteries.' Book 101 Ways to Swear in English

Download or read book 101 Ways to Swear in English written by Stephen W Bradeley and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to my book of 101 Ways to Swear in English. An analytically and sometimes meta-analytically study of how we the English swear. Where those words originated from and why. Their origins and rise to fame and how we use them now, sometimes years later. It occurred to me one day, that I spend my working week here in Sao Paulo, Brazil teaching students how to speak English in our school from books that are written and produced in the United Kingdom and teaching those students how to speak with our so called pure and sexy British accent. Of course, I am English and so firmly believe that "English English" is far superior to any other English spoken around the world. After all it's the mother tongue right? This book is humorous whilst been completely honest. If you are offended by bad language then switch over now. Bad language is part of our lives. This book is an attempt to teach strangers to our shores how to use the colored words in our language. As well as a satirical look at ourselves.

Book Five Steps to Happiness

Download or read book Five Steps to Happiness written by Murphy Enda and published by Liberties Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is there to be enjoyed, not endured' In Five Steps to Happiness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist Enda Murphy guides the reader through the five kinds of thinking and behaviour that lead to panic attacks, anxiety and depression. With a unique and simple style, free from psychobabble, Enda explains the reasons why most of us have these five habits. He clarifies what mental health actually is and investigates why we keep driving the thinking and behaviour that causes our unhappiness. He explains where our emotions come from and challenges our perception of what we think is normal. The five habits are also described in exercises throughout the book which teach the reader how they manifest themselves and how to identify the triggers behind them. With many of his ex clients allowing him to use their stories, Enda is able to demonstrate the development of each habit through a stage-by-stage examination of each client's experience. It is this clear and exact approach that makes Murphy's book so effective at getting to the root of why we experience mental distress. Through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Enda teaches the reader methods whereby those of us who experience mental health difficulties can introduce into our lives, skills to change our destructive thinking and behaviours. While primarily a book for those who are experiencing anxiety and depression, it is also one for those wishing to understand why these conditions occur, those whose families and friends may be suffering and also therapists and health professionals who would like to learn more about how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works in real life.
