Book Black Women and da Rona

Download or read book Black Women and da Rona written by Julia S. Jordan-Zachery and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in the ways Black women understand their lives, this collection archives practices of healing, mothering, and advocacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing that Black women have been living in pandemics as far back as colonialism and enslavement, this volume acknowledges that records of the past—from the 1918 flu pandemic to the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic—often erase the existence and experiences of Black women as a whole. Writing against this archival erasure, this collection consciously recenters the real-time experiences and perspectives of care, policy concerns, grief, and joy of Black women throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Nineteen contributors from interdisciplinary fields and diverse backgrounds explore Black feminine community, consciousness, ethics of care, spirituality, and social critique. They situate Black women’s multidimensional experiences with COVID-19 and other violences that affect their lives. The stories they tell are connected and interwoven, bound together by anti-Black gendered COVID necropolitics and commitments to creating new spaces for breathing, healing, and wellness. Ultimately, this time-warping analysis shows how Black women imagine a more just society, rapidly adapt to changing experiences, and innovate ethics of care even in the midst of physical distancing, which can be instructive for thinking of new ways of living both during and beyond the era of COVID-19. Laurie is a wedding photographer who has photographed more than a thousand weddings over the last ten years. One morning, she wakes up and wonders what happened to all those couples. She starts making calls. Some of them are still together. Others have split up. She begins a photography project to document what happens to love after the wedding. She photographs widowers and divorcees, homewreckers and stalkers. She is still photographing weddings, and at one of them she meets a man who has sneaked into the proceedings. A crasher. They share a spark, a few moments of powerful chemistry, and then he's gone. Later, at home, she finds pictures of him at eleven other weddings she's photographed and wonders if his propensity to crash weddings is sweet or creepy. She starts looking for him at every wedding she photographs. When she finally sees him again, a romance begins between them. Through her courtship, glimpses of her past emerge-her own first marriage and divorce, the things she is trying to get over, to get past, that threaten her new relationship. Her past makes her a ghost at all the weddings she photographs. Before the book is over, she has to tear down all the walls she has built.

Book Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World

Download or read book Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World written by and published by Bright Skylark Book Products. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World" combines popular music culture, science fiction fantasy, and horror to create a uniquely engaging metaphysical epic. The story takes us inside the world of Danny Blue, a young man struggling to make peace with the death of his girlfriend, a gifted artist named Valerie Hyerman whose passing sparks the creation of a controversial spiritual movement. Was her death suicide, murder, or something completely different from either? The stunning truth unfolds in Froggtown, a college community where many people are said to have ?died dirty? and wander the streets in search of release from a spiritual limbo. Such a town seems an unlikely place for a superstar musician like Jimmy Redfyre to kick off his tour on Christmas Eve, or for his main rival Ruzahn to keep popping up in Danny Blue?s life. Both musicians, it turns out, are something much more than entertainers. And both, for some reason, have released songs about Danny?s life? Equally bizarre are the strange changes he begins to experience as he seems to evolve from an ordinary human to something not so ordinary at all. Written with the visionary intensity of Franz Kafka, the mystical poetics of Khalil Gibran, and the psychological complexity of Philip K. Dick, "Christmas When Music Almost Killed the World" is a one-of-kind work of extraordinary modern fiction.

Book excerpt: UnHoly Alliance, a powerful and truly vivid story of an ex-priest who marries young women as he searches for love and adoration, imposing his will and cheating on his chosen wife. At times the stories are poignant and heartbreaking as it addresses lifes drama on broken marital relationships and what it means to a love-deprived spouse who marries for the wrong reasons; leaving behind a trail of broken hearts, mental illness and loneliness. Deprived of family love as a child, he does not know how to love a spouse or children he begets. Johns ego interferes with making his wives happy. Marriage to John is an official paper, nothing more. During each marriage he befriends an unsuspecting young woman as he convinces her of his honorable intentions as a mentor. The reader finds how he complicates marriage by having a pretend friend he introduces uncaringly in his present marriage. Divorce only means he will marry quickly his side-friend, avoiding loneliness and his part in admitting his role in creating havoc in his previous marriage. His sexual prowess will keep him from understanding his part in the destruction of the sacrosanct sacrament of matrimony. Molded by a priestly past, John, a handsome, intellectual man, blames the Church for his personal demise. His past haunts him, never giving him peace, as his betrayal to his present wife will never change his attitude toward other women. The immorality unravels as his wives begin to mature intellectually. His lack of faithfulness to his beautiful trophy wives deepens his betrayal and lack of loyalty. Emma will be the chosen one to contemplate on the many years he married her and the contradictions she begins to unravel. Her deep scars will turn into a story of a love gone wrong as she examines her shattered illusion of love.

Book Me My Mother My Life

Download or read book Me My Mother My Life written by Ayomide Adeniola and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Me, My Mother, My life is a poetic journey through the trials of a young woman who longed to break free of the burden of an oppressive family legacy. Beautifully narrated, the author unblinkingly examines her life experiences, telling her story in a way that only one who has deeply experienced life, love, and God could portray. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Ayomide spent her childhood and young adulthood in the country of her parents origin where life for this young British girl was to be grabbed by both hands with spirit, good humour, and great resolve. When she returned to England, her faith in God led her on an odyssey to heal the generational issues with which she had long been faced. Beyond its value as a beautifully-constructed and gripping memoir, this book leads the readers into their own private journey of reflection on their personal relationships, containing the wisdom of emotional and spiritual healing as well as personal growth. Not for the faint-hearted, Me, My Mother, My Life will deepen your understanding of life, love, and the value of forgiveness. A well-written personal tale of a womans trials of the spirit and her passage to healing. -Kirkus Adeniola writes well and is a sensitive observer ... the trajectory of her life from her student days in Nigeria to her professional life in England is genuinely interesting. Her writing is informed by her Christian faith, but not in a way that puts off more secular readers. -BlueInk Culture clash meets generation gap in this memoir by Ayomide Adeniola ... Adeniolas memoir remains compelling because of the strong family bond that comes through no matter how contentious the conversation. With Me, My Mother, My Life, Adeniola uncovers the basic truth of many family arguments: we wouldnt fight so much if we didnt care so deeply. -ForeWord Clarion

Book An Indonesian English Dictionary

Download or read book An Indonesian English Dictionary written by John M. Echols and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This dictionary is meant primarily as a tool for English speakers who need to know Indonesian and who deal with Indonesian writings. The aim has thus been to give comprehensive coverage to forms a foreigner might run across in Indonesian readings, from this era or from the past, but excluding classical Malay literature, Much of the Indonesian written production (written and otherwise) contains slangy, colloquial, and regional forms, and we have not excluded such forms. On the other hand we have confined the listing of dialectical forms only to those likely to be widely known...The dictionary should also be useful to Indonesians who wish to learn English equivalents of Indonesian words, but it has not been developed primarily for that purpose, because many English words can only be defined by a sequence of Indonesian words." from Introduction.
