Book Goal Setting and Its Influence on Achievement in the Spanish Language Classroom

Download or read book Goal Setting and Its Influence on Achievement in the Spanish Language Classroom written by Alyssia Miller and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study employs an interdisciplinary approach that bridges theories from second language acquisition, education, and psychology, and centers on finding new techniques to help students learn. In this study, I examined goal orientations, goal setting, and the effects on achievement in beginning level Spanish language learners. Firstly, I defined language achievement as three-fold consisting of final course grades, intercultural competence, and linguistic competence. Then, in nine sections of a beginning level Spanish course, I employed five steps of goal setting, a process that I have coined the "5 As." They are articulation, action, assessment, adherence, and achievement. Results show that in the main goal orientation categories (which consist of mastery, performance, approach, and avoidance) mastery goals and approach goals were the most common. The mastery approach goal orientation was the most common goal type when using a 2 x 2 framework (which compares mastery approach, mastery avoidance, performance approach, and performance avoidance). Analysis of participants' written goal statements showed communication/speaking, grammar, and listening comprehension as the main areas that participants wanted to master in their Spanish course. Considering the effects on achievement, results indicate that students who followed this process of the 5 As and actively set goals had statistically significant higher final course grades as compared to the control group (p = .034). Further analysis of these results revealed a significant difference between the control group and the approach goal orientations (p = .020). In terms of intercultural competence development, results suggest that students did not develop interculturally, and this was independent of whether they set a goal or not. Participants also did not believe that learning culture was a necessary part of language learning. Regarding linguistic competence development, there were statistically significant interactions, but the main effects and post hoc analyses only revealed significance between the pre- and posttest scores in the control group, who significantly decreased (p = .050), and the pre- and posttest scores in the avoidance group, who significantly increased (p = .024). This study also demonstrates the positive benefits gleaned from the goal setting process. These include increased attentiveness, awareness, engagement, language learner autonomy, motivation, self-efficacy, and self-regulation. As such, the results of this study can and should be implemented into the standards, curricula, and textbooks in order to have students become an active part of the learning process.

Book The Effect of Guided Goal Setting on the Motivation and Achievement of Eighth Grade Students in an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program

Download or read book The Effect of Guided Goal Setting on the Motivation and Achievement of Eighth Grade Students in an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program written by Deborah L. Layman and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pilot study examined the feasibility of guided goal setting within Socratic seminar and its effects on the achievement and motivation of International Baccalaureate students in an MYP language and literature class. Participants were eighth-grade students enrolled in four language and literature classes with the same instructor. The experimental group (two classes, n = 30) received guided goal setting for six weeks, while the waitlist control group (two classes, n = 24) received the intervention during the last two weeks. As this was a pilot study, inferential statistics were limited, and the study focused instead on descriptive statistics. Descriptive analyses identified many positive outcomes of the guided goal-setting intervention for the experimental group, including increased number of contributions over time. However, when data were examined by race, gender, and goal type, some differences were observed. White students contributed more often during seminar and achieved their goals more frequently than Black students. Female students contributed more frequently during seminar than male students. Students who chose questions or evaluative/interpretative goals made more contributions than students with verbal or factual goals. However, students with questions and factual goals achieved said goals more frequently. The feasibility results and descriptive statistics of this pilot study suggest that guided goal setting resulted in several positive differences in student achievement. A larger-scale study should be conducted with modifications to the research design as indicated. Additional research questions exploring racial, gender, and goal type differences should also be explored.

Book Setting Academic Achievement Goals in Primary Schools

Download or read book Setting Academic Achievement Goals in Primary Schools written by Sandra K. Hastie and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goal setting has been identified in recent research as being an indicator of academic achievement, self-efficacy, and motivation, yet there is still much debate as to what the key factors are that lead to successful student goal setting within an academic environment. Thus, the major purpose of the studies in this thesis concern two interrelated issues of goal setting research, namely the importance that primary students place on goal setting in academic settings, and the role of teachers and their teaching of goal-setting strategies within primary school classrooms in New Zealand. This thesis is comprised of three studies. The first study investigated the extent to which students set goals for themselves. An additional focus was to determine who students identified as being their main sources of encouragement for setting goals and who they shared goals with. The second study focused on the impact of teaching students specific learning goals relating to mathematics, which were mastery in orientation. The aim was to determine whether having students construct their own mastery learning goals, with the support of their classroom teachers, improved academic achievement when compared with a control group. The final study sought to examine the significance of attention, motivation, and goal setting strategies in relation to goal setting behaviour. It was found that students recognised that goal setting was beneficial to them in the classroom, and that they set multiple goals in their learning. Further, the majority of the goals that students did set on their own were typically performance rather than mastery in orientation. When taught specifically how to set mastery oriented goals, students showed an overall increase in their mathematics achievement. Finally, it was found that student motivation, attention, and goal setting strategies were crucial factors in determining the degree to which goal setting behaviour occurred.

Book Research Based Goal Setting and Student Journaling Influence on PACER Test Scores and Goal Setting Achievement

Download or read book Research Based Goal Setting and Student Journaling Influence on PACER Test Scores and Goal Setting Achievement written by Kirk Charles Williams and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current status of goal setting in my PE class had left me to question its true effectiveness. In the past, many students have improved their PACER [Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run] test scores, but was that a result of goal setting, activities in PE class or extracurricular activities? To gauge the effectiveness of goal setting in PE, I compared current goal setting in Classroom A to Classroom B who received a combination of research based strategies that have been widely accepted as effective goal setting approaches. Listed below are the three research questions used in my mixed methods study: 1. Would student achievement in the PACER test be improved more through a revamped research based goal setting with journaling than current goal setting methods? 2. To what extent would journaling improve students' ability to reach their PACER goal? 3. Would research based goal setting with journaling help students to place a higher value on their goals? This action research study used a mixed-methods design to compare quantitative data from PACER baseline scores to PACER final between two fifth grade classes ... Students were tallied during field observations and in the experimental class, students answered teacher prompts to see if students associated relevance and value to the research based goal setting with journaling process"--Leaves 15-16.

Book Language Use in the Two Way Classroom

Download or read book Language Use in the Two Way Classroom written by Renée DePalma and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an extended ethnographic study of a dual language (Spanish-English) Kindergarten, this book takes a critical look at children's linguistic (and non-linguistic) interactions and the ways that teaching design can help or hinder language development. With a focus on official “Spanish time”, it explores the particular challenges of supporting the minority language use as well as the teacher's strategies for doing so. In bilingual classrooms, teachers' goals include bilingualism as well as academic achievement for all. The children may share these interests, but have their own agendas as well. This book explores the linguistic and social interactions that may help, or hinder, these multiple and sometimes conflicting agendas. How can teachers design educational practice that takes into consideration broader forces of language hegemony as well as children's immediate interests?

Book Goal Setting and Reading Achievement

Download or read book Goal Setting and Reading Achievement written by Mary Parrish and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was completed to find if there was a significant different in reading comprehension scores from the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) between students who set reading goals and students who did not set reading goals. Involving students in their learning, through goal setting, should be considered when developing classroom instruction for reading, which could affect how students perform on standardized tests. Research shows that goal setting, in the area of reading, supports student achievement. Findings of this study did not conclusively support this research. The reasoning behind this is not pinpointed in this study; however types of goals and teacher involvement in the goal setting process could affect the goal setting data. After compiling and reviewing the findings of this study, current research and literature, and the statistical data from the ITBS, it is found that goal setting in the area of reading could have an effect on student reading achievement.

Book excerpt: The most pressing issue in schools is classroom management, specifically how to motivate students to do the work well. Many teachers need strategies to help them and they also need the theory and research behind the strategies. Why do the strategies work and why do they sometimes not work? This book has 5 sections that are the different theoretical foundations for 18 different keys to student motivation. At the beginning of each section, the theory is explained briefly. It is important that the readers understand the reason why a key or strategy works. In this understanding, a teacher can modify and accommodate the key or strategy to fit his/her particular students and context. There are 18 chapters. Each chapter is a key, or applicable concept, to student motivation that has been garnered from a theory or seminal work. This explanation is followed by a vignette of a teacher’s experience, called In The Classroom, and is followed by multiple strategies.
