Book Religion and Empire in Portuguese India

Download or read book Religion and Empire in Portuguese India written by Ângela Barreto Xavier and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the colonization of Goa in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries take place? How was it related to projects for the conversion of Goan colonial subjects to Catholicism? In Religion and Empire in Portuguese India, Ângela Barreto Xavier examines these questions through a reading of the relevant secular and missionary archives and texts. She shows how the twin drives of conversion and colonization in Portuguese India resulted in a variety of outcomes, ranging from negotiation to passive resistance to moments of extreme violence. Focusing on the rural hinterlands rather than the city of Goa itself, Barreto Xavier shows how Goan actors were able to seize hold of complex cultural resources in order to further their own projects and narrate their own myths and histories. In the process, she argues, Portuguese Goa emerged as a space with a specific identity that was a result of these contestations and interactions. The book de-essentializes the categories of colonizer and colonized, making visible instead their inner-group diversity of interests, their different modes of identification, and the specificity of local dynamics in their interactions and exchanges—in other words, the several threads that wove the fabric of colonial life.

Book excerpt: With the liberation of Goa, Daman and Diu from the Portuguese, the people of these territories entered once again into the mainstream of Indian society. Goa now has the dual task of breaking from the bleak past and of participating in the process of nation-building and economic development. Professor R.N. Saksena attempts in this book some aspects of the problem of emotional and national integration of the Goans. The study was sponsored by RPC, Planning Commission. It is based on the analysis of considerable secondary data and of the responses obtained from a sample of 1200 persons drawn from Old Goa and New Conquests. Professor Saksena examines the questions related to language, economic reforms, political participation, and merger. In doing so he makes use of history, aggregate data, and people’s responses to a battery of attitude questions. It emerges from his analysis that while Konkani was recommended as the state language in preference to Portuguese, a majority favoured Hindi as the national language. As medium of instruction, both Marathi and Konkani have received greater support than English. A favourable response to governmental programmes of economic reform, high rate of political participation, and a majority support for Hindi as national language are indicative of Goa’s commitment to secular and democratic ideals of Indian polity. While accepting the new status within the Indian Union, Goans are keen to retain their identity as a separate state and forge ahead on the path of development. The book affirms that Goans have entered into the mainstream.

Book Hindu Catholic Encounters in Goa

Download or read book Hindu Catholic Encounters in Goa written by Alexander Henn and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Goa on India's southwest coast was once the capital of the Portuguese-Catholic empire in Asia. When Vasco Da Gama arrived in India in 1498, he mistook Hindus for Christians, but Jesuit missionaries soon declared war on the alleged idolatry of the Hindus. Today, Hindus and Catholics assert their own religious identities, but Hindu village gods and Catholic patron saints attract worship from members of both religious communities. Through fresh readings of early Portuguese sources and long-term ethnographic fieldwork, this study traces the history of Hindu-Catholic syncretism in Goa and reveals the complex role of religion at the intersection of colonialism and modernity.

With a population of 65,000 in the city and approximately 100,000 in the metropolitan area, Panaji is Goa's third largest city after Vasco da Gama and Margao. Panaji means "land that never floods." It has terraced hills, concrete buildings with balconies and red-tiled roofs, churches, and a riverside promenade. There are avenues lined with gulmohar, acacia and other trees. The Baroque Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is located overlooking the main square known as Praca da Igreja. Pretty villas, cobbled streets and interesting buildings give Panaji a Portuguese ambience. The word Panaji is derived from the words panjani and khali, which mean a boat and a small creek respectively, in Sanskrit. Thus the modern word Panaji is a corrupt form of the old word Panjakhali as inscribed on the copper-plates found, belonging to the rule of Kadamba king Tribhuvanamalla. The official name is Panaji. The Portuguese name was Pangim. The city is called Panjim in English. It has been spelt as Panaji since the 1960s. The city is called ponnje in Konkani. Earlier a small village on the river...
