Book The Reorganisation of British Local Government

Download or read book The Reorganisation of British Local Government written by John Dearlove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-09-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published in 1979, just a few years after the Local Government Act of 1972 redrew the map of British local government. Local authorities were also encouraged to change their organization and methods of work; anxiety was expressed about finance, councillor 'calibre' and the credibility of the whole system itself; and neighbourhood councils and public participation in planning were introduced. John Dearlove's aim is to make sense of these changes and the discussion they generated. He does this by showing that both the official case for reorganization and the academic discussion of it have hindered their own understanding by uncritically accepting superficial traditional wisdoms which fail to reveal the concealed ideological positions behind reorganization. Thus, he aims to develop a truly political perspective on reorganisation which is rounded out and given greater depth by the insertion at appropriate points of comparative material drawn from American experience and studies.

Book Diverting the Flow

Download or read book Diverting the Flow written by Margreet Zwarteveen and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the South Asian region, water determines livelihoods and in some cases even survival. However, water also creates exclusions. Access to water, and its social organisation, are intimately tied up with power relations. This book provides an overview of gender, equity and water issues relevant to South Asia. The essays empirically illustrate and theoretically argue how gender intersects with other axes of social difference such as class, caste, ethnicity, age and religion to shape water access, use and management practices. Divided into six thematic sections, each of which starts with an introduction of relevant concepts, debates and theories, the book looks at laws and rights; policies; technologies and intervention strategies. In all, the book clearly shows how understanding and changing the use, distribution and management of water is conditional upon understanding and accommodating gender relations. Published by Zubaan.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Subnational Debt Management and Restructuring

Download or read book Subnational Debt Management and Restructuring written by Kahkonen, Satu and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, policymakers around the world are focusing once again on government debt sustainability. In China, subnational government debt is an important part of total government debt, and therefore deserves the attention that policymakers have paid to the topic. Subnational debt has played an important role in financing China’s impressive infrastructure that is the envy of the world. It was instrumental in the economic stimulus that China so effectively staged after the global financial crisis, through which China maintained high levels of economic activity. This e-book reports on the proceedings of a joint P.R. China Ministry of Finance-World Bank international workshop on Subnational Debt Management held in Nanning, China in October 2015. Looking at both the Chinese perspective on this subject of subnational debt and selected international experiences along with experts’ perspectives together, we provide a syntheses of key issues which China needs to consider going forward in subnational debt management and restructuring. The roundtable discussion among international and Chinese experts oat the workshop on the way forward for China provided an illuminating discussion which highlighted the need for a transitional strategy for subnational financing, and the need to use debt sustainability as a guide for transition, which will involve tough fiscal policy choices and restructuring of the subnational economies concerned (not just debt restructuring alone). The urgency of strengthening budget and debt management prudent public investment prioritization and management in the subnational context cannot be emphasized enough.
