Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although This Book Is Intended As A Sequel To Foundations Of Discrete Mathematics By The Same Author, It Can Be Read Independently Of The Latter, As The Relevant Background Needed Has Been Reviewed In Chapter 1. The Subsequent Chapters Deal With Graph Theory (With Applications), Analysis Of Algorithms (With A Detailed Study Of A Few Sorting Algorithms And A Discussion Of Tractability), Linear Programming (With Applications, Variations, Karmarkars Polynomial Time Algorithm, Integer And Quadratic Programming), Applications Of Algebra (To Polyas Theory Of Counting, Galois Theory, Coding Theory Of Designs). A Chapter On Matroids Familiarises The Reader With This Relatively New Branch Of Discrete Mathematics.Even Though Some Of The Topics Are Relatively Advanced, An Attempt Has Been Made To Keep The Style Elementary, So That A Sincere Student Can Read The Book On His Own. A Large Number Of Comments, Exercises, And References Is Included To Broaden The Readers Scope Of Vision. A Detailed Index Is Provided For Easy Reference.

Book The Art of Computer Programming Volume 4A

Download or read book The Art of Computer Programming Volume 4A written by Donald E. Knuth and published by Addison-Wesley Professional. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 1247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Computer Programming, Volume 4A: Combinatorial Algorithms, Part 1 Knuth’s multivolume analysis of algorithms is widely recognized as the definitive description of classical computer science. The first three volumes of this work have long comprised a unique and invaluable resource in programming theory and practice. Scientists have marveled at the beauty and elegance of Knuth’s analysis, while practicing programmers have successfully applied his “cookbook” solutions to their day-to-day problems. The level of these first three volumes has remained so high, and they have displayed so wide and deep a familiarity with the art of computer programming, that a sufficient “review” of future volumes could almost be: “Knuth, Volume n has been published.” –Data Processing Digest Knuth, Volume n has been published, where n = 4A. In this long-awaited new volume, the old master turns his attention to some of his favorite topics in broadword computation and combinatorial generation (exhaustively listing fundamental combinatorial objects, such as permutations, partitions, and trees), as well as his more recent interests, such as binary decision diagrams. The hallmark qualities that distinguish his previous volumes are manifest here anew: detailed coverage of the basics, illustrated with well-chosen examples; occasional forays into more esoteric topics and problems at the frontiers of research; impeccable writing peppered with occasional bits of humor; extensive collections of exercises, all with solutions or helpful hints; a careful attention to history; implementations of many of the algorithms in his classic step-by-step form. There is an amazing amount of information on each page. Knuth has obviously thought long and hard about which topics and results are most central and important, and then, what are the most intuitive and succinct ways of presenting that material. Since the areas that he covers in this volume have exploded since he first envisioned writing about them, it is wonderful how he has managed to provide such thorough treatment in so few pages. –Frank Ruskey, Department of Computer Science, University of Victoria The book is Volume 4A, because Volume 4 has itself become a multivolume undertaking. Combinatorial searching is a rich and important topic, and Knuth has too much to say about it that is new, interesting, and useful to fit into a single volume, or two, or maybe even three. This book alone includes approximately 1500 exercises, with answers for self-study, plus hundreds of useful facts that cannot be found in any other publication. Volume 4A surely belongs beside the first three volumes of this classic work in every serious programmer’s library. Finally, after a wait of more than thirty-five years, the first part of Volume 4 is at last ready for publication. Check out the boxed set that brings together Volumes 1 - 4A in one elegant case, and offers the purchaser a $50 discount off the price of buying the four volumes individually. Book Stimulus Class Formation in Humans and Animals

Download or read book Stimulus Class Formation in Humans and Animals written by T.R. Zentall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-10-24 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulus class formation has been studied independently by two groups of researchers. One group has come out of a learning theory approach, while the second has developed out of a behavior analytic tradition. The purpose of the present volume is to further establish the ties between these two research areas while allowing for differences in approach to the questions asked. The book is loosely organized around four themes. The first two sections deal with what constitutes functional and equivalence classes in animals and humans. In the third section, the authors attempt to identify stimulus control variables that contribute to the formation of equivalences classes. The last section deals with the complex issue of the role of verbal behavior in equivalence classes. The goal of the book is to provide the reader with a better understanding of the current state of research and theory in stimulus class formation. It is also hoped that it will stimulate research into how and under what conditions, stimulus classes can form.

Book Spontaneous Spoken Language

Download or read book Spontaneous Spoken Language written by Jim Miller and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998-03-26 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Miller and Regina Weinert investigate syntactic structure and the organization of discourse in spontaneous spoken language. Using data from English, German, and Russian, they develop a systematic analysis of spoken English and highlight properties that hold across languages. The authors argue that the differences in syntax and the construction of discourse between spontaneous speech and written language bear on various areas of linguistic theory, apart from having obvious implications for syntactic analysis. In particular, they bear on typology, Chomskyan theories of first language acquisition, and the perennial problem of language in education. In current typological practice written and spontaneous spoken texts are often compared; the authors show convincingly that typological research should compare like with like. The consequences for Chomskyan, and indeed all, theories of first language acquisition flow from the central fact that children acquire spoken language but learn written language.

Book Experts in Uncertainty

Download or read book Experts in Uncertainty written by Roger Cooke and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extensive survey and critical examination of the literature on the use of expert opinion in scientific inquiry and policy making. The elicitation, representation, and use of expert opinion is increasingly important for two reasons: advancing technology leads to more and more complex decision problems, and technologists are turning in greater numbers to "expert systems" and other similar artifacts of artificial intelligence. Cooke here considers how expert opinion is being used today, how an expert's uncertainty is or should be represented, how people do or should reason with uncertainty, how the quality and usefulness of expert opinion can be assessed, and how the views of several experts might be combined. He argues for the importance of developing practical models with a transparent mathematic foundation for the use of expert opinion in science, and presents three tested models, termed "classical," "Bayesian," and "psychological scaling." Detailed case studies illustrate how they can be applied to a diversity of real problems in engineering and planning.
