Book excerpt: The present volume describes cyclic sulfur-nitrogen compounds whose ring system con tains one or two other types of atoms in addition to sulfur and nitrogen. At least one sulfur atom can be regarded as having oxidation number IV in one resonance structure. That means the sulfur in fact has an oxidation number higher than 11 and lower than VI. The volume continues "Sulfur-Nitrogen Compounds" Part 2, in which the binary sulfur(lV)-nitrogen ring systems are described. Compounds with the same "hetero atom" in the sulfur-nitrogen ring are arranged in groups. Within a group the compounds are arranged according to ring size, and for a given number of ring atoms, in order of decreasing S: N ratio. Neutral compounds are described before ions, and saturated compounds before unsaturated, aromatic ones. A very heterogeneous material is brought together in this volume. SN Se2 rings, which 2 strongly resemble the binary S3N2 ring, are covered. S-N-Si rings with five, six, and eight atoms, and also N-S-N-bridged eight-membered rings, are described. The S-N-P rings form a puzzling and complex part of this volume; they readily interconvert by dimerization, cleavage, and by addition and loss of NSN and NPN groups. Especially interesting is the aromatic character of 8-N-P rings.

The compounds are arranged according to ring size: The three-atom ring S(NR)2 and the five-atom ring S3(NR)2-3,5, where R = C2F5, CF2Cl, are prepared by photolyzing mixtures of RN=NR and S2Cl2. The six-atom rings S2(NR)4-2,3,5,6, S4(NR)2-3,6,S4(NR)2-5,6, and S4(NR)2-4,6, where R = organyl, can be synthesized from SxCl2(x = 1 to 3) and amines, hydrazines, or diimines. The eight-atom rings S7NH, S6(NH)2, and S5(NH)3 are obtained by reacting S2Cl2 and NH3 in DMF. The well-known ring S4(NH)4-2,4,6,8 was first prepared in 1908 by reduction of S4N4 with SnCl2.2 H2O. Numerous organic and inorganic derivatives of these eight-atom S-N rings including the anion S7N-, adducts, polymers, and metal complexes are also dealt with. A large portion of the volume is devoted to sulfur(II)-nitrogen-element ring systems. The S-N-C rings possess biological activity.

This transient molecule was observed in its electronic ground state and several electronically excited states. The descrip tions of the sulfur nitride (thiazyl) ions SN+ and SW follow. The SN+ ionwas studied in the gas phase as weil as in the solid state where it forms salts. Thionitrosyl complexes containing the SN Iigand as a terminal linear unit are described at the end of the first section. The second section concerns Sulfur-nitrogen compounds with 2-coordinate sulfur and starts with the description of poly(sulfur nitride), (SNlx· The preparation, crystal structure, and metallic and superconducting properties of (SN)x, which were extensively studied, fill a !arge part of the volume. Halogen-modified poly(sulfur nitride) such as the widely studied (SNBr )x 04 and Na-modified poly(sulfur nitride) are dealt with in the following chapters.
