Book Technology Uses Irradiated Fuel Reprocessing

Download or read book Technology Uses Irradiated Fuel Reprocessing written by J.R. Allen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-09-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In connection with the recent treatment of radium and the actinides, the Gmelin Institute is carrying out the description of thorium and its compounds. The supplement volume A 2 comprising the history, isotopes and the recovery of thorium and the supplement volumes C 1, C 2 and C 3 describing the compounds with the noble gases, hydrogen, oxygen compounds and nitrogen compounds have already been published; also published is supplement volume C 5 describing the compounds with sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and boron. The supplement volume D 1 and D 2 describing the properties of thorium ions in solution and the solvent extraction of thorium, as well as supplement volume E describing the coordination compounds have also been published. The present volume deals with the technical fabrication of important thorium compounds and their uses in the nuclear and non-nuclear fields. It also describes in detail the behavior of thorium nuclear fuels during operation of a nuclear power plant as well as the reprocessing of burnt-up thorium fuels. By far the most important Th compound is ThO2 due to its high chemical and thermal stability as well as its high melting point near 3000°C, the highest for any metal oxide. The inherent radioactivity of 232Th and the formation of radioactive daughter products are important limiting factors in the technical scale use of thorium compounds because of necessary radiation protection measures and of health physics. 232Th is transformed by neutrons to the fissile uranium isotope 233U. Thorium therefore is an excellent breeding material, especially for high-temperature reactors. A lot of basic and technical investigations for reprocessing of spent thorium fuel have to be done; no such reprocessing plants exist as yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astatine is - besides radon and francium - the only natural radioelement which only has short-Lived isotopes, thereby excluding experiments with . . weighable" amounts of the element. This implies that all available data on physics and chemistry of this element are 12 16 based on experiments on the tracer scale with 10- to 10- g - and this will also not change in future because no longer-Lived isotopes as yet known are to be expected. Due to the fact that the only isotope of At occurring in the natural decay series, 219At, results from the 0. 005% a-branching of 223Fr which itself is produced by the only 1. 38% a-branching of 227 Ac - a member of the 235U series - there is no chance to recover substantial amounts of 219At from natural sources for sCientific research of At. All studies, therefore, are being done with the isotopes 209At to 211At having half-lives in the few hours region and being obtained by irradiation of bismuth with a-particles via (a,xn) reactions or by proton irradiation of heavy elements via spallation reactions. The mostly used isotope is 7. 22 h 211At. The fast separation of the obtained At isotopes is no very difficult procedure and is either being done by wet adsorption-precipitation techniques or making use of its high volatility by destilling in air.

Book Pt Platinum

    Book Details:
  • Author : Esther Belin
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 3662093774
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Pt Platinum written by Esther Belin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the isotopes, atoms, atomic ions, molecules, and clusters of the six platinum group elements Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt. It starts with a compilation of the properties of the isotopes, followed by the description of the formation and separation of the radioactive isotopes. The chapters on the atoms and atomic ions deal with the configuration of the outer-shell electrons, manifested by optical terms and spectra, ionization energy, and electron affinity, as weil as with the energy levels of the inner-shell electrons, manifested by X-ray spectra and Auger electron spectra. The last section gives information on the formation and the physical properties of the plati num group molecules and clusters. Most of the contributions are written by extern al experts (for details, see the back of the titte page). One of the authors (Prof. Y. Cauchois) thanks Dr. M. Othmane for his constant and efficient cooperation in the treatment of the drafts and the checking of the proofs. Book Gmelin Po Polonium Suppl Vol closed 1

Download or read book Gmelin Po Polonium Suppl Vol closed 1 written by Kenneth W. Bagnall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-10-30 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mme. Curie discovered polonium as a part of her doctoral thesis research. Polonium was the first element to be discovered solely because of its inherent radioactivity. Because there was no knowledge of polonium's chemical properties, the separation steps were followed using only the increase in the specific radioactivity. The first Gmelin Polonium volume, edited in 1941, shows how little was known about polonium for a long time. More detailed investigations on this element were performed only after World War II when the handling of large quantities of highly radioactive nuclides had been developed. Most information on this heaviest Main Group VI element comes from investigations on the tracer scale, especially data that describe its behavior in solution. On the other hand, many solid compounds, such as halides, oxides, and metal polonides as well as the metal itself, are produced in weighable amounts so that structural data are also available. However, these data are far from complete so there is a wide-open field for future research, especially by using the newly developed ultramicrotechniques for preparation and identification of radioactive compounds in the nano- to microgram range. The present volume of the Gmelin Handbook, Polonium Suppl. Vol. 1, gives a very clear, critical, and updated picture of the different aspects of the behavior of polonium - from chemical and physical properties to production, from the nuclear properties of the 29 isotopes to its biological and environmental behavior, and finally to the use of polonium in a variety of applications. Because of the interest in this element has decreased markedly in recent years (apart from its environmental behavior), this volume will be a special and unique source for polonium information for a long time. It also clearly shows that large gaps in our knowledge of this rare natural radioelement still exist. Consequently the volume can serve as a guide to future research initiatives.
