Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol abuse is this culture's most important drug problem. Statistics indicate that it is exacting a great and relentlessly increasing toll of human suffering. It is clear that the problem is not being dealt with in any effective manner. At the invitation of the. Canadian Hepatic Foundation, many of the world's experts gathered in Toronto, May 14-15 1976, to focus attention on one of the most important aspects of the alcohol problem -alcohol induced liver damage. The epidemiology of alcohol induced liver disease was discussed and current views on the pathogenesis of the problem were reviewed. New insight into the pathological alterations of the liver was presented and some of our current therapeutic capabilities were discussed. Dr. Hans Popper summarized the Symposium and presented some of his views on those aspects of the problem which will require early attention by the research community. The Symposium achieved its immediate objective -that of bringing together the committed experts of various disciplines for an updating of our understanding of alcohol and the liver and for a discussion of new approaches to the problem. As a backdrop to the Symposium, however, was large writing on the wall to the effect that we are expending our research talents and efforts on a totally unnecessary problem. Right now we probably know enough and have sufficient resources at our disposal to solve the problem.

Book excerpt: "Malathion is a registered insecticide and acaricide used on a wide variety of sites including agricultural and non-agricultural sites. In 2018 (the most recent year for which data are available), over 25 000 kg of malathion was sold in Canada. Malathion may be released into surface water or soil as runoff from the application site. Malathion is not usually found in drinking water sources in Canada. Low levels of malathion have been found in several Canadian provinces. The maximum reported concentrations are well below the MAC. Malathion is rarely detected in foods"--Executive summary.

Book Biochemistry of Collagens Laminins and Elastin

Download or read book Biochemistry of Collagens Laminins and Elastin written by Morten Karsdal and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Collagens, Laminins, and Elastin: Structure, Function, and Biomarkers provides a comprehensive introduction to collagen and structural proteins. Type I collagen is one of the most abundant molecules in the body, playing essential roles in different tissues, particularly bone and skin. A key aspect of type I collagen is its post-translational modifications which are essential for correct synthesis and structural integrity of collagens, for tissue-specific functionality, as well as for application as biomarkers of different pathologies. This volume summarizes current data on key structural proteins (collagens, laminins and elastin), reviews how these molecules affect pathologies, and describes selected modifications of proteins that result in altered signaling properties of the original extracellular matrix component. Further, it discusses the novel concept that an increasing number of components of the ECM harbor cryptic signaling functions that may be viewed as endocrine functions. Additionally, it highlights how this knowledge can be exploited to modulate fibrotic disease. Provides a comprehensive introduction to collagen and structural proteins Provides insight into emerging analytical technologies that can detect biomarkers of extracellular matrix degradation Includes a chapter dedicated to the biomarkers of structural proteins Contains insights into the biochemical interactions and changes to structural composition of proteins in disease states

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zebrafish at the Interface of Development and Disease Research presents the latest on the shared pathways that govern development and contribute to disease. Zebrafish have traditionally been used to study vertebrate development, providing interesting data on the developmental processes and genes that are implicated in disease. This new release in the series contains informative discussions on congenital heart defects in zebrafish, the use of zebrafish in studying kidney development and disease, and muscle development, homeostasis and disease in zebrafish. Each chapter interweaves the study of zebrafish development and its application to the immune system, the kidney, liver, heart and others. The subject matter is unique - no single volume has pulled together the theme of development and disease with zebrafish as a centerpiece Leading experts in the field - all of them running zebrafish focused labs for each chapter
