Book Integrated Water Resources Management Concept Research and Implementation

Download or read book Integrated Water Resources Management Concept Research and Implementation written by Dietrich Borchardt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the concept, contemporary research efforts and the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The IWRM concept was established as an international guiding water management paradigm in the early 1990ies and has become a vital approach to solving the problems associated with the topic of water. The book summarizes fourteen comprehensive IWRM research projects with worldwide coverage and analyses their motivations, settings, approaches and implementation of results. Aiming to be an up-to-date interdisciplinary scientific reference, this book provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of contemporary IWRM research, examples of science based implementations and a synthesis of the lessons learnt. It concludes with some major future challenges, the solving of which will further strengthen the IWRM concept.

Book Land use modelling in the GLOWA Jordan River Project

Download or read book Land use modelling in the GLOWA Jordan River Project written by Volland, Jan and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results from the land-use simulation study which has been carried out at the Center for Environmental Systems Research (CESR) as part of the GLOWA Jordan River project1 (sub-project 3.3.). A central objective of GLOWA Jordan River was to analyse the vulnerability of water resources in the Jordan River basin under the influence of global change. In this context the land-modelling system LandSHIFT.JR has been adapted and applied to calculate spatially explicit scenarios of land-use change on the territories of Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority (PA), and the resulting impacts on ecosystem service values. The simulation results served as input for further studies within the project context, e.g. related to water availability (Menzel et al. 2009) and the GLOWA Jordan River Atlas. After an introduction, chapter 3 gives an overview of the materials and methods used to conduct the simulation study. First, the LandSHIFT.JR model is described, followed by a short introduction to the scenarios which were developed within the GLOWA Jordan River project. The quantitative model drivers that were derived from these scenarios are discussed in the last part of the chapter. In chapter 4 exemplary simulation results from LandSHIFT.JR are presented. These raster maps include information on the change of land-use types and population density as well as on livestock grazing and ecosystem service values. Starting year of the simulations was 2000 while the scenarios were specified up to the year 2050. A complete set of simulated maps is included in the annexes.

Book The Wolves of Minnesota

    Book Details:
  • Author : David L. Mech
  • Publisher : Voyageur Press

Download or read book The Wolves of Minnesota written by David L. Mech and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wolves of Minnesota are one of conservation's greatest success stories. Of the 48 contiguous United States, only Minnesota-with a wolf population at an estimated 2,600-has managed to protect and sustain a viable wolf population over the past two decades. Today, the wolf is close to being removed from the federal government's endangered species list. But while some applaud the wolf's return, others worry about the human cultural costs of maintaining such a large population, and others wonder if that population is too high for the wolf's own good. Edited by renowned expert "wolfman" Dr. L. David Mech and comprising the work of several researchers who have studied Minnesota wolves, "The Wolves of Minnesota" is an authoritative account of the background of the wolf in Minnesota. It features the fascinating story of the comeback of the wolf in Minnesota and examines the cultural costs of the comeback of the animal, to the point where the question is not "Will we ever hear the howl of the wolf again?" but "How many howls are enough?" "The Wolves of Minnesota" examines the animal and its packs and populations, the past and present ranges of the species in Minnesota, the rich history of the scientific research about it, the biology of the wolf, the wolf's prey, wolf-human interactions, and the future of the wolf in Minnesota.

Download or read book Pain Therapeutics written by Charlotte Allerton and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2014 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a contemporary review of the field of pain therapeutics, including the historical medicines which still dominate standard of care treatments, as well as the new mechanisms and combinations/reformulations that have dominated the regulatory approvals over the last decade. In addition this book provides a deep review of the key biological mechanisms currently under investigation for their utility into the treatment of pain, such as ion channels, opiates and others. Additional discussion highlights the current challenges of pain research, covering a range of topics from difficulties in identifying new targets and pre-clinical models to the current regulatory and commercial challenges. This background sets the scene for recent scientific developments in pain research, such as the drive for genetic validation of targets and the derivation of human cell platforms from stem cells. Finally, the book covers the discovery and development stories of two pain products approved in the last decade. These case studies for Lyrica and the Butrans patch, will give insight into the discovery and development challenges and successes for both an oral and non-oral product.

Book Central Nervous System Control of the Heart

Download or read book Central Nervous System Control of the Heart written by T. Stober and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two "Brain Heart Conferences" in Jerusalem in 1978 and 1983 were based upon the common interests of clinically orientated neurologists and cardiologists in the problems of centr'al autonomic control and autonomic disturbances of the cardiovascular system. The relatively slow scientific progress, at least clinically, in this area may be due to the fact that neither cardiologists nor neurologists felt competent in both topics. Furthermore, it has become increasingly difficult to have an overall view of the basic research and its clinical applications in this field. New research methods, based on a comtination of morphological, biochemical, and physiological techniques, have enabled the functional differentiation of various areas of the brain and subsequently also of the autonomic nervous system. The simple dualistic concept of an antagonistic sympathetic-parasympathetic regulation of the circulatory system is no longer valid. It is clear that numerous neurotransmitters, in particular the neuropeptides, are involved in a highly differentiated subdivision of the autonomic system. One of the aims of the IIIrd International Brain Heart Conference was therefore to supply a synopsis of the latest developments in basic research undertaken in this field by exceptionally competent scientists, to clinically orientated neurologists and cardiologists, and thus to provide new impulses for clinical research.

Book Molecular Mechanisms of Leaf Morphogenesis

Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms of Leaf Morphogenesis written by Tomotsugu Koyama and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaf morphology is obviously determined in a plant. By contrast, its morphology is often changeable when the plant copes with various environmental changes. To update our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of leaf morphogenesis with robustness and flexibility, this book provides a series of academic papers that cover molecular mechanism of leaf morphogenesis and offers readers' opportunities to find beautiful mechanisms that plants develop.
