Book Glover Steam Locomotives

Download or read book Glover Steam Locomotives written by Richard L. Hillman and published by Heimburger House Publishing Company. This book was released on 1996-07-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the oldest companies in Georgia, the Glover Machine Works produced 200 small steam locomotives in eight different gauges. The only recorded history of this company is now available in a deluxe 10” x 10”, 128-page hardbound book from Heimburger House Publishing Company and written by Marietta resident Richard L. Hillman. The amazing archives of its historic records allows for a complete description of this fascinating company. From the first engine that rolled out of the Glover shops in 1902 to the removal of the last steam locomotive from the plant in 1995, Glover Machine Works followed the rise and fall of the lumbering and mining industries of the South. Although Glover locomotive production never rivaled companies such as Alco or Baldwin, Glover provided as many as 200 small steam locomotives in several gauges to a variety of companies in a dozen states and the same number of foreign countries, mostly in the Caribbean and South America. Learn about the various wheel arrangements, weights, tractive efforts and gauges as you step back in time with each page. The Glover plant turned out 0-4-0s, 0-4-2s, 0-4-4s, 0-6-0s, 0-6-2s, 0-6-4s, 2-6-0s, 2-8-0s and 4-6-0s in eight different gauges including 24”, 36” and standard gauge. By 1930, the firm had expanded into other types of industrial products to fill the locomotive void, and left the locomotive business to others. This book proudly features many of the glass plate negatives that were retained by Glover in the plant archives where hundreds of original documents, catalogs and photographs were stored for many years. The Eastman Kodak Company helped supply materials in producing the Glover archive photographs. Lavishly illustrated with 230 pictures and many builder’s photos, this book contains eight chapters and a locomotive roster, a photo gallery illustrating the locomotives and a chapter entitled Puzzle Pages. The Glover Machine Works, now dissolved and the plant torn down, continues to evoke memories of small, distinctive steam engines that made their way mostly into the South’s stone and marble quarries and lumbering operations.

Book Off the Beaten Tracks in Japan

Download or read book Off the Beaten Tracks in Japan written by John Dougill and published by Stone Bridge Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations on the people, culture, and history of Japan from a long-time resident riding the rails along the less-traveled western coastline. This journey the length of Japan takes the reader off the beaten tracks to explore some of the country's remoter regions along the Japan Sea—from Wakkanai in northern Hokkaido to Ibusuki in southern Kyushu—in a fascinating mix of travelogue, anecdote, and personal memoir. At each of the thirty stops along the journey the author, who has lived in Japan for thirty years, goes in quest of the spirit of place, determined to highlight what makes it special. Mixing comments on landscape and culture, the author was inspired by Alan Booth and Donald Richie and brings a contemporary perspective to his writing. The text provides some practical information on travel by rail and railway lines, but goes into far more depth and personal observation than a conventional guidebook for tourists.

Book Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Download or read book Blue Ridge Scenic Railway written by Melissa Beck and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having whistled its first "all aboard" in 1988, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway now rambles alongside the Toccoa's clear waters, treating 50,000-plus sightseers annually to verdant mountain scenery. This former Cherokee land's pioneers carved homesteads from rough terrain, doggedly hauling goods via mule wagon. The discovery of rich copper veins in nearby Polk County, Tennessee, attracted an influx of settlers, but before they could enjoy an Industrial Age boom including rail for faster freight movement, they would endure route changes, bankruptcies, and land-rights issues. As Fannin, Polk, and surrounding counties neared the 20th century, the long-anticipated railroad arrived, and with it prosperity. This is a photographic history of the copper miners, shop owners, homesteaders, and railroad workers who made these mountains their homes, often for many proud generations.
