In 2019, 66.6 million pairs of shoes were manufactured across the world every single day. They have never been cheaper to buy, and we have never been more convinced that we need to buy them. Book Making Sweatshops

Download or read book Making Sweatshops written by Ellen Rosen and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-12-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only comprehensive historical analysis of the globalization of the U.S. apparel industry, this book focuses on the reemergence of sweatshops in the United States and the growth of new ones abroad. Ellen Israel Rosen, who has spent more than a decade investigating the problems of America's domestic apparel workers, now probes the shifts in trade policy and global economics that have spawned momentous changes in the international apparel and textile trade. Making Sweatshops asks whether the process of globalization can be promoted in ways that blend industrialization and economic development in both poor and rich countries with concerns for social and economic justice—especially for the women who toil in the industry's low-wage sites around the world. Rosen looks closely at the role trade policy has played in globalization in this industry. She traces the history of current policies toward the textile and apparel trade to cold war politics and the reconstruction of the Pacific Rim economies after World War II. Her narrative takes us through the rise of protectionism and the subsequent dismantling of trade protection during the Reagan era to the passage of NAFTA and the continued push for trade accords through the WTO. Going beyond purely economic factors, this valuable study elaborates the full historical and political context in which the globalization of textiles and apparel has taken place. Rosen takes a critical look at the promises of prosperity, both in the U.S. and in developing countries, made by advocates for the global expansion of these industries. She offers evidence to suggest that this process may inevitably create new and more extreme forms of poverty.

Book Distressed US Industries in the Era of Globalization

Download or read book Distressed US Industries in the Era of Globalization written by Lall Ramrattan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents analyses of several distressed industries in the United States, including the steel, footwear, textile and apparel, paper and publishing, and automobile industries. It particular, it focuses on the influence of the new era of globalization on these industries, as the authors argue that the transition to their current distressed states was triggered by the structural changes that resulted from globalization. While the inevitability of the negative impact of globalization may lead some to neglect research of distressed industries, these industries continue to survive and productively contribute to the economic base of the United States. Their stories are about the changing structure, conduct, and performance of the industrial United States.

Book Territory specialization and globalization in European Manufacturing

Download or read book Territory specialization and globalization in European Manufacturing written by Helena Marques and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although traditional manufacturing (textiles, clothing, footwear, furniture, etc) has been in decline in developed countries, it still represents an important part of European employment due to its labour-intensive character. Moreover, its geographical concentration particularly exposes certain regions of Europe to job loss as the industry declines. This book provides an explanation for the differences observed in the impact of globalization which is based on the influence of the territory and of the production specialization of the firms. The conclusions presented in the book are withdrawn from a detailed study of the Spanish textile-clothing sector. The book highlights the intensity of the relationship between the organizational model of the territory where the firms are located (high concentration of interrelated firms in a well-defined geographical area called "industrial district"), the specialization strategy implemented and the globalization of the economy. It also suggests the need to consider those factors as interdependent determinants of firm performance, particularly given the current trend for firms to simultaneously concentrate geographically and multilocalize domestically and internationally. The proposed methodology of analysis can be used to study other manufacturing sectors in other European countries.
