Book Globalisation and Governance in the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Globalisation and Governance in the Pacific Islands written by Stewart Firth and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pacific Islands are feeling the effects of globalisation. Free trade in sugar and garments is threatening two of Fiji's key industries. At the same time other opportunities are emerging. Labour migration is growing in importance, and Pacific governments are calling for more access to Australia's labour market. Fiji has joined Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Kiribati as a remittance economy, with thousands of its citizens working overseas. Meantime, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands grapple with an older kind of globalisation in which overseas companies exploit mineral and forest resources. The Pacific Islands confront unique problems of governance in this era of globalisation. The modern, democratic state often fits awkwardly with traditional ways of doing politics in that part of the world. Just as often, politicians in the Pacific exploit tradition or invent it to serve modern political purposes. The contributors to this volume examine Pacific globalisation and governance from a wide range of perspectives. They come from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Hawai'i, the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and Jamaica as well as Australia."--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Globalization and Culture Change in the Pacific Islands written by Victoria S. Lockwood and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2004 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering insight into the major changes that are taking place in the context of increasing globalization in Pacific Island societies, the authors seek to "ground" globalization in concrete real life cases of communities that are dealing with specific processes of globalization and formulating their own responses in their own cultural terms. The case studies presented reflect the many different cultural contexts of island societies as they deal with: global politics, nation states, and ethnic conflict; global economic integration and transnationalism; evolving identities and cultural representations; changes in patterns of social and community relations; and increasing integration into global religions. For anyone interested in the effects of globalization on the peoples and cultures of the Pacific.

Book Pacific Island Economies

Download or read book Pacific Island Economies written by Hilarian M. A. Codippily and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1996 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sixth annual study focuses on the effects of globalization on developing countries and the growing divide between fast and slow- integrating economies. It describes current trends in integration and answers key questions on trade and on commodity-reliant economies. The book examines two questions in particular detail: Will trade liberalization work? The report argues that countries that embark on trade liberalization in the current environment are likely to be rewarded and recognizes that genuine adjustment costs exist and that complementary reforms are important. How can commodity-reliant countries enhance productivity and diversify exports? Although many of these countries have been among the high growth, fast integrators, many others have been poor performers. Successful exporters are characterized by high productivity in existing commodity sectors, the capacity to diversify to non-traditional commodity exports, and the maintenance of economic stability. The report projects continued rapid acceleration of integration over the next decade, with moderate import growth in the developed countries and continued sharp import increases in developing countries. Those countries that continue to reform their economies and expand their participation in the world economy will be in a position to take advantage of the resulting opportunities; those that do not, risk falling further behind.

Book Reforming Trade Policy in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Reforming Trade Policy in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands written by Kym Anderson and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The countries of the South Pacific have struggled to generate sustainable economic growth since their independence. Interventionist policies have failed in the past here, as they have in all other regions. Business and government leaders in this region are now beginning to acknowledge - as has happened in many other developing country regions over the past two decades - that major reforms are needed to put their economies onto a higher growth path. This study examines the growth record of key Pacific island economies and identifies the reasons for their relatively poor performance. It then looks at the process of globalization that is affecting those and indeed all economies increasingly; and the role the WTO has played in that process.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to island sustainability with a focus on the small island economies in the Pacific, especially islands of Okinawa located at the southwestern edge of Japan. It examines socio-economic characteristics, development issues, policies, networking of island societies, and the roles of culture, human resources, agriculture and tourism in a globalizing world. PALM adopted “the Okinawa Initiative on Regional Development Strategies for a More Prosperous and Safer Pacific.” This initiative emphasized the important role of Okinawa in spearheading and coordinating development and educational relationships among the Pacific islands. Although the focus is on Okinawa, analytical methods and visions presented in this book will provide food for thought for many similar island societies which have been struggling to achieve toward sustainable development. Since the International Small Island Studies Association (ISISA) held its first meeting on Island of Okinawa, Nissology has been emerging as an important area of scientific investigation. The book is intended to appeal to students, academic researchers, policy makers and industry professionals and practitioners.

Book Development Problems and Prospects in Pacific Islands States

Download or read book Development Problems and Prospects in Pacific Islands States written by Biman C. Prasad and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Island countries are undergoing fundamental political and economic changes due to the process of globalisation. Many of them are struggling to come to grips with the global economic challenges of participating in a world of freer trade. Their smallness, distance from the major markets and vulnerability to natural disasters presents special challenges. Globalisation, however, also provides a window of opportunity for some of them to improve their economic growth performance through increasing exports, investment and technological advancement and labour mobility. This book deals with a number of important issues relevant for improving the economic growth performances of the Pacific Island countries. Good governance, developing appropriate and quality institutions to promote investment and exports are major challenges for most of them. In addition, the volume also provides case studies discussing the role of foreign aid, remittances and labour mobility, role of the agricultural sector, role of the informal sector, management of public finances, and the state of the public sector reform.
