Book Globalization and Industrial Relations in the Philippines

Download or read book Globalization and Industrial Relations in the Philippines written by Sarosh Kuruvilla and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization was associated with a decline in labour power and voice, and an increase in employer power focusing on enhanced world place flexibility in an era when the Philippines' competitive advantage was lower labour costs and an English~speaking workforce. This report will show that the financial crisis in Asia has served to further accelerate the crisis trend, and in several ways has created conditions for employers to easily convince workers and their representatives to push through radical workplace reforms without significant union opposition: the financial crisis has weakened labour's bargaining power and strengthened and accelerated employers' flexibility drives.

Book Organising Labour in Globalising Asia

Download or read book Organising Labour in Globalising Asia written by Andrew Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers wide-ranging insights into the organising capacities of workers in Asia today. Nine case-studies examine workers' responses to class relations through independent unions, non-government organisations (NGOs) and more (dis)organised struggles. Countering the notion that globalisation holds entirely negative consequences for labour organisation, the authors reveal some of the openings for local activism which can arise from transnational production arrangements. The volume covers the "second-tier" industrializers - China, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Bangladesh. Interdisciplinary in nature, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, development studies and international labour studies.

Book Logics of Action Globalization and Changing Employment Relations in China India Malaysia and the Philippines

Download or read book Logics of Action Globalization and Changing Employment Relations in China India Malaysia and the Philippines written by Sarosh Kuruvilla and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors develop a logic of action framework to conceptualize the impact of globalization on employment relations (ER) and to predict the trajectory of ER. They argue that the interplay among three different logics of action - the logic of competition, the logic of industrial peace, and the logic of employment-income protection - determines the ER patterns in any given nation. The strengths of the logics themselves are influenced by five often related factors: economic development strategy, globalization intensity, union strength, labor market features, and government responsiveness to workers. The authors' extensive field research on national policies and workplace practices in four Asian countries supports this framework. ER patterns apparently reflect different combinations of logic strengths, and globalization's impact on ER is both complex and contingent. Militating against long-term convergence in ER are national variations in the combinations of logic strengths, and changes in logic strengths over time.

Book Globalization and the Future of Labour Law

Download or read book Globalization and the Future of Labour Law written by John D. R. Craig and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-03 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are national and international labour laws responding to the challenge of globalization as it re-shapes the workplaces of the world? This collection of essays by leading legal scholars and lawyers from Europe and the Americas was first published in 2006. It addresses the implications of globalization for the legal regulation of the workplace. It examines the role of international labour standards and the contribution of the International Labour Organization, and assesses the success of the European experiment with continental employment standards. It explores the prospects for hemispheric co-operation on labour standards in the Americas, and deals with the impact of international labour standards on the rights of women and migrant workers. As the nature and organization of work around the world is being decisively transformed, new regional and international institutions are emerging that may provide the platform for new labour standards, and for protecting existing ones.
