Book La globalizaci n de la pobreza

Download or read book La globalizaci n de la pobreza written by Erik S. Reinert and published by Grupo Planeta (GBS). This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Globalizaci n desigualdad y pobreza

Download or read book Globalizaci n desigualdad y pobreza written by Guillermo de la Dehesa and published by Alianza Editorial Sa. This book was released on 2003 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Pobreza desarrollo y globalizaci n en el sur del sur written by Fernando Muakuku Rondo Igambo and published by Ediciones carena. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Global Inequalities

Download or read book Global Inequalities written by Orkan Köyağasıoğlu and published by IJOPEC PUBLICATION. This book was released on 2020-06-24 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization is characterized by a systemic interconnection in which what hapInequality has been on the rise across the globe and living conditions are vastly unequal between different places in the world. Currently, the richest 1% own 45% of the world’s wealth. The consequence is that some people are able to enjoy healthy, wealthy, happy lives whilst others continue to live in ill-health, poverty and sorrow. Rapid economic growth in Asia (particularly China and India) has lifted many people out of extreme poverty. Nevertheless, the wealth divide is steadily growing. According to Oxfam, between 2009 and 2018, the number of billionaires it took to equal the wealth of the world’s poorest 50 percent fell from 380 to 26. Those with extreme wealth have often accumulated their fortunes on the backs of people around the world who work for poor wages and under dangerous conditions. Women are scarce at the top and overrepresented at the bottom. Gender discrimination in the workplace contributes significantly to these persistent economic divides. There are also large differences in wealth across racial groups. Long-standing racial discrimination in many forms, including in education, hiring, and pay practices contribute to persistent earnings gaps. Inequalities have dramatically strengthened the economic and political power of those individuals at the top.

Book Latin America and Global Capitalism

Download or read book Latin America and Global Capitalism written by William I. Robinson and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-11-24 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2009 Best Book, International Political Economy Group of the British International Studies Association This ambitious volume chronicles and analyzes from a critical globalization perspective the social, economic, and political changes sweeping across Latin America from the 1970s through the present day. Sociologist William I. Robinson summarizes his theory of globalization and discusses how Latin America’s political economy has changed as the states integrate into the new global production and financial system, focusing specifically on the rise of nontraditional agricultural exports, the explosion of maquiladoras, transnational tourism, and the export of labor and the import of remittances. He follows with an overview of the clash among global capitalist forces, neoliberalism, and the new left in Latin America, looking closely at the challenges and dilemmas resistance movements face and their prospects for success. Through three case studies—the struggles of the region's indigenous peoples, the immigrants rights movement in the United States, and the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela—Robinson documents and explains the causes of regional socio-political tensions, provides a theoretical framework for understanding the present turbulence, and suggests possible outcomes to the conflicts. Based on years of fieldwork and empirical research, this study elucidates the tensions that globalization has created and shows why Latin America is a battleground for those seeking to shape the twenty-first century’s world order.

Book Social Inequality The Politics of Representation

Download or read book Social Inequality The Politics of Representation written by Celine-Marie Pascale and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a global landscape, the representational practices through which inequalities gain meaning are central- both within and across national boundaries. Social Inequality & The Politics of Representation takes a fresh look at how inequalities of class, race, sexuality, gender, and nation are constructed in twenty countries on five continents. It offers both rich insight and cultural critique- yet it does not offer a universal paradigm, nor is it concerned with debates about scholarship from "the center" or "the periphery". The collection de-centers North American/European paradigms by placing scholarship from countries around the globe on equal footing. Readers will find a variety of analytical styles including frame analysis, semiotics, poststructural discourse analysis, critical discourse studies, and conversation analysis. Each chapter provides an overview of relevant cultural and historical contexts for an international audience as well as a brief introduction to relevant methodological and theoretical frameworks. Consequently, it is both a richly diverse and easily accessible collection.

Book Challenges for Human Rights

  • Author : Fernando Falcón y Tella

Download or read book Challenges for Human Rights written by Fernando Falcón y Tella and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays we are fortunate enough to be experiencing a boom in human rights - an enormous increase of their importance in the international sphere at all levels (political, economic, social, legal and moral). For the first time the condition of the individual as “citizen,” and not just as “subject,” has gained importance. Individuals, and not only states, have now become the subjects of international law, as a result of the boom in humanitarian law and international criminal law. However, although there have been many battles won and goals met concerning human rights, the war against injustice continues and the fight has not ended. It is necessary to stay alert and to avoid a potentially paralyzing self-complacency. This collection focusses on topics that are particularly relevant for the present era. It examines issues such as multiculturalism, globalization, international criminal justice (specifically third and fourth generation rights) and, within this thematic framework, the problems that have come about as a result of the expanding reach of the Internet and of new biomedical advances. In addition, it explores the increasingly urgent challenge of how to respond to international terrorism, in view of worldwide events since September 11, 2001, and its resulting aftermath. Originally published in Spanish, this thought-provoking collection will be of interest to human rights scholars and practitioners alike.
