Lo demuestra con una profusión de datos económicos, históricos, sociológicos y políticos, y una claridad pedagógica, como ya es habitual en el autor que atrapan al lector desde la primera línea aunque no sea un experto en la materia. La globalización está reduciendo la pobreza y la desigualdad en el mundo gracias a los pilares en los que se sustenta: la mayor apertura externa de los países y la movilidad creciente entre ellos de los flujos tecnológicos, de bienes y servicios, de inversión y migratorios. Estos factores están favoreciendo la progresión en las instituciones políticas, económicas y sociales de los países menos desarrollados, lo que permite que aumente su crecimiento y su bienestar. Sin embargo, hay una serie de factores que pueden dificultar este proceso y, temporalmente, aumentar las diferencias entre países y personas. Factores como la lentitud en la difusión de los avances tecnológicos, o los de carácter estructural y exógeno geográfico y demográfico y endógeno institucionales y políticos de cada país o región. Guillermo de la Dehesa advierte que todas las barreras contra la globalización y la solidaridad van a resultar costosas tanto a las economías de los países ricos como a las de los subdesarrollados. Según el autor, lo que realmente necesita el mundo es aumentar y profundizar en la globalización. Ya que la gran falacia es que los países pobres y en desarrollo son las «víctimas de la globalización» cuando en realidad son «víctimas de la falta de globalización».

Currently, the richest 1% own 45% of the world’s wealth. The consequence is that some people are able to enjoy healthy, wealthy, happy lives whilst others continue to live in ill-health, poverty and sorrow. Rapid economic growth in Asia (particularly China and India) has lifted many people out of extreme poverty. Nevertheless, the wealth divide is steadily growing. According to Oxfam, between 2009 and 2018, the number of billionaires it took to equal the wealth of the world’s poorest 50 percent fell from 380 to 26. Those with extreme wealth have often accumulated their fortunes on the backs of people around the world who work for poor wages and under dangerous conditions. Women are scarce at the top and overrepresented at the bottom. Gender discrimination in the workplace contributes significantly to these persistent economic divides. There are also large differences in wealth across racial groups. Long-standing racial discrimination in many forms, including in education, hiring, and pay practices contribute to persistent earnings gaps. Inequalities have dramatically strengthened the economic and political power of those individuals at the top.
