Influenced bytoday’s hyper-connected age, scholars no longer perceive the Mediterranean as astatic place where “Greco-Roman” culture was dominant, but rather see it as adynamic and connected sea where fragmentation and uncertainty, along with mobilityand networking, were the norm. Hence, a current theoretical approach to studyingancient culture has been that of globalization. Certain eras of Mediterranean history (e.g., the Roman empire) known for their increased connectivity have thus beenanalyzed from a globalized perspective that examines rhizomal networking, culturaldiversity, and multiple processes of social change. Archaeology has proven a usefuldiscipline for investigating ancient “globalization” because of its recent focus on howidentity is expressed through material culture negotiated between both local andglobal influences when levels of connectivity are altered. One form of identity that has been inadequately explored in relation to globalizationtheory is insularity. Insularity, or the socially recognized differences expressed bypeople living on islands, is a form of self-identification created within a particularspace and time. Insularity, as a unique social identity affected by “global” forces,should be viewed as an important research paradigm for archaeologies concerned with re-examining cultural change. The purpose of this volume is to explore how comparative archaeologies of insularitycan contribute to discourse on ancient Mediterranean “globalization.” The volume’s theme stems from a colloquium session that was chaired by the volume’s co-editors atthe Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America in January 2017. Given the current state of the field for globalization studies in Mediterranean archaeology,this volume aims to bring together for the first time archaeologists working ondifferent islands and a range of material culture types to examine diachronically how Mediterranean insularities changed during eras when connectivity increased, such asthe Late Bronze Age, the era of Greek and Phoenician colonization, the Classicalperiod, and during the High and Late Roman imperial eras. Each chapter aims tosituate a specific island or island group within the context of the globalizing forces and networks that conditioned a particular period, and utilizes archaeological material toreveal how islanders shaped their insular identities, or notions of insularity, at thenexus of local and global influences.

Book excerpt: This book adopts the proposition that it is possible to the customs to be sources of contractual obligations. To support that premise, it was necessary to seek jurisprudential (arbitration and litigation) and comparative basis. Even more, due to contract law internationalization, customary international sources should be subject of domestic treatment, as they provide contractual obligations as well as they work as contractual interpretation tool. However, one can´t neglect the need to control the customary content. In detailed terms, then, we can say that the role reserved for the custom as contractual law rules source has always been residual in Brazilian law. Accompanying the modern European experience, doctrine and Brazilian legislation emphasize the secondary, when not merely interpretive, role of the contractual custom. In turn, Brazilian case law wasn´t able to give general treatment to contractual custom. Moreover, the process of reducing distances and cultural, social and economic approximation, usually called globalization, influenced the contracts through the incorporation of a number of solutions brought from the international trade practice. Although they might be justified by the age-old principle of freedom, somehow these international "uses" insinuate themselves into Brazil to the point of requiring that the Brazilian Courts themselves to give them treatment and shelter. On one side, if you deny the existence of a creative normative role in contractual custom by another, albeit indirect, is recognized not only their existence but the possibility of foreign origin. This paradoxical treatment reflects, to some extent, another consequence: the Brazilian contract law is in the process of internationalization. Here, then, a new confrontation is announced: a broad creative freedom (a tributary of the so-called Lex mercatoria) and the foreign act incorporation control (public policy). Unlike before, however, no simplistic answer would be feasible, particularly because of the complexity of contemporary and regulatory Brazilian contract law.

The Committee recommends that, in order to promote understanding of the impact of globalisation on jobs and communities, the Government should publish an annual review of new developments affecting the impact of and prospects for globalisation. Given that protectionist sentiment is increasing, posing a threat to the progress of both developed and developing countries, the Committee supports the Government's promotion of a successful conclusion to the Doha trade round. Globalisation is also threatened by the risk of a disorderly unwinding of global imbalances and the success of a reformed International Monetary Fund will be judged by its performance in ensuring global imbalances are properly addressed.
